The Super Bowl is the most watched single program on television. NBC used to try snatching viewers away through halftime show stunts. I believe three years ago they did some Playboy Fear Factor, and two years ago they tried the Weekend Update Halftime Special. Both utterly failed to get anyone to turn the dial. NBC's not gonna sink anymore money into creating programming for that block, or suffer the opportunity cost of advertising for it (self-advertisement means you can't sell that space to paying advertisers). They'll probably just rerun a movie like Independance Day.
