I think the only time I've ever seen advertising for SNL is in the later hours of the night (during Conan or later). Of course, it's difficult to advertise a live show in the way they advertise upcoming episodes of "Will & Grace" et al ad nauseum, so they usually just flash quick shots of sketches from past weeks, which, if I wasn't already a viewer, I'm not so sure those ads would entice me to tune in come Saturday night.

On the same note, ever catch the ads for that night's "Mad TV"? They usually come on during "COPS", and, again, though it's quick footage of the night's actual show, is not enough to entice me to tune into the show. But then, one or two quick jokes in a 10-second commercial seldom will make a viewer stand at attention, if we're still in the room during commercials. Most shows I watch I discovered through word-of-mouth, or they came on after a show I was already in the habit of tuning in to see (ie. most sitcoms that followed "Everybody Loves Raymond" the past several years). Quite frankly, I imagine I'll stop watching prime-time television altogether within the next couple of seasons.

Now, other people are simply genre junkies. My parents, for example, will watch any damn reality series aired by any of the many networks. 3 reality shows on during the same hour? Not a problem. They'll watch one live, and tape the other two to watch later. Then they'll discuss the outcomes at great lengths with other family members. Of course, if, while watching one reality show, a commercial suddenly pops up for a new reality series, they get excited and can't wait to see that one, too. That commercial could show a row of midgets, and the announcer comes on: "One of these men is NOT a midget. Rebecca has five weeks to get to know each one of them, and decide.. 'Who's The Real Giant?'" I bet I could tell them I saw a promo for such a show while watching "COPS", and they'd be genuinely psyched!
