Chapter 2: On the Air.

At this time Saturday Night You was still just an idea in one mans head. While Lonergan had the passion and the drive to get his show off the ground, unfortunately what he didnt have was the money. Due to this lack of funds he had to go back and find the one friend that he thought might be able to help him get the money together for the show. This friend was adult film star Ron Jeremy

Ron Jeremy Adult Film Star

I had met Patrick back in the mid 1990's when I was filming Sex Toy Story and Pat was working as a production assistant on the film. One of our actors called in one day and we couldnt find anybody to replace him. Thats when Pat said he would do it. Everyone on set was rather hesitant about getting this newbie on the camera but I remember he just said "Tell me when you need the money shot". Thats when I knew he was a true professional. I gotta admit though I am surprised he jumped in so quick, it was a guy on guy scene.

Patrick Lonergan

Their is not a day of my life that goes by where I dont regret jumping into that scene, fortunately they let me do a scene with the swedish girly twins next so I got back on the right path. I got out of the porn industry after that due to a couple of weird rashes I got but me and Ron were casual friends. I figured Ron could help me out somehow as long as it wasnt doing porn I was okay with that. When we met in late 2000 Ron said he would be up to it as long as he could be the executive producer of the show, the title was going to be "Ron Jeremy Presents: Comedy sketches like the ones you see on Saturday Night Live." The only plus side to that was I think we would have had the longest show title in history.

Tony Dumont

I remember that brief time when Ron was in charge and it was just absolute hell. He was always in the writers room trying to pitch nothing but bad porno idea after bad porno idea, and believe me we had enough sex jokes and sketches during the first year. He also wanted to work in his films as part of the sketches as a cross promotion kind of thing. Everyone in the room was just losing their mind, Ron would have been thrown out flat on his face the first day, if he hadnt been the man with the money.

Democratic Darkness

I remember talking to Pat about Ron and he kept shaking his head at me saying "Yeah, yeah I know". It was just an absolute madhouse, finally the writers and everyone just said f*%k it, and we all walked out on him. Ron just couldnt be controlled and we werent going to deal with that son of a bitch a moment longer than we had to.

Patrick Lonergan

When the writers all walked out on me in Jan 2001 I was absolutely crushed, my idea for a great comedy show was ruined before I could even get it off the ground. Even if Ron was the best writer in the world and we both worked nonstop their was absolutely no way we would be able to get a good show off the ground. Fortunate for me I was lucky enough to get hit with a car about two weeks later.

McKenna Fuller

I remember when Pat got hit with the car and I just felt terrible. Here the writers and I went and walked out on him and then he winds up getting hit by a frickin car, how do you like that? Everybody went to the hospital to wish him well and surprisingly enough he didnt have any hard feelings about it. Their was even a sympathy card sent to him by somebody called L.M. He told me in late January that he was going to get his show on the air NOW!

Jordan Davidson

While most people wouldnt consider being hit by a car to be a good thing Pat took the SOB that hit him for all that he was worth, after the settlement and the amount of lawyer and tax fines Pat had to pay off he had 500 dollars and enough money to get SNY off the ground with no outside help. After the settlement Pat and the writers got drunk at a local Bennigan's, they knew that would be the last night they wouldnt have to worry about a show deadline.

Patrick Lonergan

After numerous discussions with the writers we knew that their had to be a title change in the show. We first came up with the idea of calling the show "The C team" and having the first show be hosted by Mr.T. The C stands for comedy. We tested that around the internet for a bit but a lot of people thought we were a bit too retro. We then just finally settled on the name "Saturday Night Two" and decided to focus on the important stuff, the sketches.

Democratic Darkness

I remember our deadline for the first show with JLO was barely met, late Thursday night we had to have at least eight sketches done and we had only had two by that point. We really had to throw it together at the last second. If I remember correctly their was a sketch that made rape a joke. Its a good thing we were on the internet because we never would have gotten that onto broadcast air. Not a chance in hell

Patrick Lonergan

I remember the first show and for the most part it was a disaster, but despite the many things that went wrong I could see tons of potential. It felt rushed but the general feel of the show was good. It was out their on the net and it didnt get crucified. Thats a good show as far as I am concerned.

Jordan Davidson

The first SNY show reminded me a lot of what Conan Obrien had to deal with on his first show. Their was a lot of energy but their was also a lot of stuff that needed to be worked on. We had made the most important step though, we started; and only half of us had a drug problem

Indeed their were many things different in the beginning for SNY, half the writers would soon go to rehab and Patrick Lonergan would have to deal with the potential threat of a million dollar lawsuit by NBC. This was extremely troublesome as Patrick didnt have a million dollars to lose. The format was somewhat disjointed, the jokes were low taste even for the internet and their was the chance at any time that it could be pulled from the net. Lonergan knew he had to get ratings up and soon, because the internet isn't a patient woman. The talent of SNY was about to bloom.

Next time on Live from Snlyou.jt.org its Saturday Night You learn more about the first season of Saturday Night You, the drug trouble behind the scenes, and of course the newcomers brought onto the show so Pat would have to write half the sketches in the damn show. All this and more next time.
