Subject: First review of the season
In reply to: Patrick Lonergan 's message, "REVIEWS: Ben Affleck 10/02/04" on 02:30:11 10/03/04 Sun

Okay, I got the first review in, so what's my prize? Kidding, kidding. Now, a breakdown of the sketches and my critiques.

Stephen Motts on a Date: First, let me say that I enjoyed how CCS incorporated the wrongly under-used Tina Fey into the sketch. Second, I'm sad to say that I have no clue who Stephen Motts is. However, I didn't need to know anything about Motts to appreciate this sketch. I don't really get sports cliches and commentary, but using it in a bad date format was hilarious. Poor Tess, she got hurt so badly, and Stephen's lines are cold and comedic. It was a good touch to have Tina flub the lines at the end of the sketch, then get harassed again after the sketch, and then she pulls it off flawlessly. Pity we couldn't see the "Nudist Nixon" segment. Ah well, maybe next week. The best line had to be the cournacopia reference, "one or two carrots shoved in me", I got that. However, the reporter's name being Joe Momma fell a little flat. Maybe if it had been an actual reporter with a controversial personality, like Dan Rather, but hey, that's my opinion.

Monologue: I predicted that the mono would feature something about how Affleck's hosting again six months after the last time. I was wrong, but the intro was still good. A little upsetting seeing cameos in both this and the actual monologue, but hey, it was still good. Kevin Smith's bitching is humorous, though I think there's a bit where Affleck should have had a line, when Kevin cuts from one comment to "shut up" with no response from Ben. Affleck's mother came from nowhere, and sad to say, I felt she contributed nothing. Why give them marajuana brownies, what's the rationale? Ah well, I'm not one to talk, I'm working on a Jude Law monologue that features something coming from nowhere, so I guess I can't criticize the same technique. Nice job, Jack.

Kentucky Jelly: While reading this sketch I had what I like to call a "Jessica Simpson moment" in that I had to read it about three times before I finally got the joke. Then it hit me; "Oh, yeah, he covers up the middle letters in Kentucky, it's K-Y. Duh!" Once I realized that, the sexual overtones and innuendo were far more amusing. I ca just imagine the bumpkin humping the cookie dough in a drunken state. You write killer commercial parodies, Patrick. I just wish that I'd be able to see them in addition to reading them.

Presidential Debate: I saw this in advance, and I think Mark did a great job. It's quite enjoyable to see how he portrays the candidates. My only complaint with this bit was the "apple juice" line. I enjoy a good Bush parody, but making him out to be childish kind of diminishes the humor of the piece. Other than that, the satires were very good: Bush is perennially confuses, Kerry's running on his war record because he has no substance or ideas, and Nader is a seatbelt junkie. Can't wait to see what you have planned for the rest of the campaign season, Mark.

The Roast of Donald Trump: I worked on this sketch, so I can't really comment on it. I just wanted to say to Prateek and Mark that I greatly appreciate all the help you gave me. You really made this bit shine.

The Sub: I have mixed feelings on this sketch. In one aspect, Mr. Barker was more frightening and loud than funny. In another aspect, there were some occasionally good lines and funny concepts. For example, they won't let a gay man teach but have no problems having a drunk, violent lunatic educate their children, the turning-tricks bit and the "was your mommy a magician" response, Barker's three rules of living, and his Wal-Mart comment were the key moments. Perhaps if Barker had been less loud and overbearing and more cynical and sarcastic, then it might have appealed a little better. But once again, that's just me, and loud characters have never really been my cup of tea unless they're well-developed and not just angry, bitter and loud.

Special Edition DVDs: Another so-so sketch, diminished again by the fact that it's only text and can't be seen. The use of clowns to justify Jimmy Fallon's crack-ups and a 3-D Mr. Bill were the best points, as well as Lorne's explanation as to how Horatio caused a debacle with the Olsen Twins show, but the other digital renovations fell flat. Why put Tony Danza in the most shows, and wouldn't inserting other characters into the sketches cause confusion if the dialogue and actions didn't match up to what happened in the actual skit? Sorry DRG4, but I have to say that the concept was great.
