Subject: Reviews...first five sketches

Cold Opening - Man, this seemed a little bit long for SNL's usual CO's where one person is giving an address. Some CO's have been as long or even longer, but not those which highlight one person speaking the whole time. I loved the intro, but I disliked Arafat using urban slang. This has been done so much...non-black guy uses ebonics, loves being a part of the trend, hilarity ensues...minus the last part, since it's old as salt. The general direction of this piece was good, though, and there were indications that a revised, shorter version of this would have fit fine on SNL any day of the week.

Monologue - Right off the bat originality goes out the window as we have Donald Trump (or his character, rather) heading away from homebase and looking for Lorne. From then on and up until the real Trump fires Lorne, this was shaping out to be a cool monologue. However, the sketch is relatively jokeless from the firing on...throwing in the opinion that the show has sucked since Ferrell's firing doesn't provide for laughs. I don't see how ending with quotes of Lennon's "Imagine" would make anyone laugh.

Employee Eval. Gone Awry - This was a very refreshing, clever piece that really brought out the best in Parnell and Trump. It has traces of some of the sketches aired when George Steinbrenner hosted, in that you take a host that is considered to be ruthless and depict him as the exact opposite. However, I'm going to have to recommend, with all the reservation in the world because I hate rules, the rule of three here. After the great dart board stuff, and the hilarious email, you should have jumped one more step ahead before the ending, which was nearly perfect. One more joke, which should have been something that was obviously offensive to the boss, followed by a great, clever rationale as to why he thinks it's good for the company, and this is a perfect sketch. Nice job, though.

Dinner/Watsons - This sketch was nice and quirky, but relatively jokeless. I'm assuming Armisen's obviously gay demeanor juxtaposed alongside the conservative parents denouncing gay marriage might have been funny, though. Overall, this was well-written and fun to read...but what about an ending? I mean, there is NO attempt to end this thing with any sort of resolution, conclusion, or big joke. Gotta do that...very tough sometimes...but an absolute must.

Trump Condoms - I did like this idea, but it was poorly written. There was a lot of basic sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation rules ignored, making for unrealistic, hard to read dialogue. But, it was funny in concept...keep on truckin', Jack.
