In reply to: Patrick Lonergan 's message, "REVIEWS: Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen 05/15/04" on 00:53:50 05/15/04 Sat

Cut it out, have mercy, and how rude Mr. Bear, its the Olsen twins, Ashley and Mary-Kate. Now everyone knows Ashley is the funny one of the two, but did you know Mary-Kate can speak four different languages?

"Out of the Frying Pan"

Just a meandering conversation that doesn't really have a point to it. "Come again" is a lame joke that has been used many, many, many times. I've also heard a bit about Coulier being the dad...I think Bob Saget made that joke before. Geez, rippin' material from Saget? The sketch rips the show, dissing the musical talent, and really depresses the audience with the listlessness. Why rip everything? At least be funny with it. This sketch would never see the light of day at SNL (not even considering you have one of them saying she's a "whore.") Once they gave the LFNYISN, I can't imagine the audience being very pumped up...way to take the life out of the crowd. I'll call you if I ever need entertainment for a wake.

"Monologue"

I like this take, that Ashley doesn't exist. Very funny. I don't get the "I'm with Stupid" midriffs line. The website and horsey porn jokes were very funny. I like how Mary-Kate was tied up (for many reasons). The reasons Ashley ties her up makes sense, but you could have been more creative here. But this is one of the stronger pieces you've written Patrick, very funny.

"Private England's Dilemma"

As Banya said, this is comedy gold! Okay, it isn't, but I wrote it. I see its flaws now and the reviews I've read make a lot of sense, so thanks for the input.

"Smiles and Frowns"

Why is the sad guy named Smiles and the happy guy named Frowns? Just coincedence? I know its irony, but give us a reason. Suicide is just usually not very funny to me unless its done right. I think you went the cheap route and it didn't work. This actually seems a lot like the "Debbie Downer" sketch SNL did a few weeks ago. I like that premise, but like I said, its been done. But this is just good stuff happens to Hector, crap happens to Victor, and its not particularly funny. The ending is rather abrupt...a fade out for a sketch about a show is not the way to end it. I think you have a good premise, but it just wasn't very funny. Maybe give us a twist at the end, I don't know, it still seems a lot like "Debbie Downer."

"Team Morale"

It seems like a lot of sketches last week and this week resort to people being mean without any reason as a source of humor. Occasionally this can be funny, but overall I think you're going to fail at this more often than not just because we don't like mean people! We only like meanness when its done to people who deserve it. But kids? This has some mildly funny moments, but after a few insults, the "what the hell" starts setting in and you wonder what the hell is wrong with these coaches. I actually like the joke at the end "we're the ones who need senstivity training," but I felt this was the only ounce of wit in the skit. The rest is just insults.

"Time After Time"

I really like these absurd TV shows. This kinda reminds me of the Scott Joplin Time Travel show on SNL. "Be me later alligator" is pretty lame, but it would be funny if Amanda pointed that out...to herself. The stuff never happening was pretty funny...but I think you could have made them even funnier by making them more outrageous. Mexico invading the U.S ain't as funny as say, JFK trading nuclear weapons for Russian whores. The tearing the arm off bit is a bit bizarre, and not quite funny. "That never gets old" is kinda funny. Great premise, I think you can do more with it though. Good start.

WU

"Rhea county" - sounded SNLish, but just wasn't that funny (and its old news)
"KKK and terrorists" - good
"Ted Rall" - just seems to be a rant without any humor
"Ike Turner" - lame
Subway lady - I don't get this at all. What does "bonding" mean in this sketch?
"suicide, Martha Stewart" - decent
"chlamydia" - you need a punchline, just saying "Paris Hilton" is kinda weak.
"Paul McCartney" - not very funny...could be I suppose if Tina hammed it up
"Women of Costco" - decent
"book sales" - very funny and very clever! Very Fallonish.
"Pam Anderson votes" - very funny
"SUV gas" - I had to read this three times, but the third time I found it very funny...re-word it somehow though
"missile defense" - very funny
"sweet lemur porn" - very funny!
Parnell commentary - weird. I didn't get it.

Huge impreovement this week. The second half was pure comedy gold. Very funny stuff that ranks above a lot of the material Tina and Jimmy put out. Whoever wrote them should apply for Jimmy's old position.

I'll review the rest later.
