I saw the movie last night and really enjoyed it. I thought there were parts that were really fabulous. It opened well. The mines of Moria were great as was the Balrog. Gandalf, Bilbo, Frodo, Gimli, Legolas and Galadriel. However, there were elements that were not included or changed that did disturb me.

I felt that Aragorn's introduction at Bree was cut entirely too short. This man is going to be the King! Yet, there was no history given, no build up, nothing. In this sense Aragorn was left flat. I also felt that the man who played him was too young and far too unkingly. He did not inspire me at all.

I felt that Weathertop was also rushed. Much history is given here which builds up Lothlorien and the wraiths. Not a big pick, but certainly a nit-pick. :)

Frodo was well cast, yet somehow I never felt like I knew who he was. I thought his will was much stronger in the book. He was much more of an observer in the movie than I would have liked. I know this is because perhaps he is going to expand in character somewhat, but still a hero must have certain qualities from the outset to be a hero. I did not see these in the movie Frodo.

My biggest nitpick is that at the breaking of the fellowship, Frodo runs into Aragorn. This never took place in the book, and in my opinion it lessens Aragorn. This man is the High King, sworn to see Frodo to the end, yet he simply lets him go alone into danger. I don't see a man like Aragorn allowing this to happen consciously. In a sense he breaks his oath. Aragorn was, above all, a man of his word.

I agree with Omega also that Gimli and Legolas should have been given more opportunities to be friends.

These are nitpicks, mostly. I was very glad to see the movie, though it was a trifle melodramatic in points. Too much crying, especially when there are characters with whom I did not associate. I never felt Frodo's pain, so to speak. He never seemed in real danger. I am hoping that the DVD will include much of the things I regretted not seeing.

On the whole the movie was astounding to watch, though. Over all I give the movie a B+. :)

And, yes, I will go see the others!
