Playing devils advocate & living in the South where just about everybody has a gun of some sort (including myself). Perhaps he's just an avid hunter.
And I know of police officers, friends & clients that have had to shoot & kill an animal to put them out of their misery for various reasons (mostly from getting hit by a car) If you know what you're doing, a shot to the head is the quickest & most humane way to let an dying animal in pain go. Just because someone' works with sharp objects doesn't make them an evil client either.
I'm sorry, but I couldn't help but chuckle when I read your post. Perhaps you misread the situation.
