Subject: Sustaining Lag - Long

I have been posting about my personal golf 'journey' in the BOMGOLF board. Frosty asked about release so I thought I would pull some text from a post on BOM that is related since BOM has restricted access. For those that aren't into the terminology - 'sustaining the lag' refers to maintaining the left arm/club shaft angle as long into the swing as possible. If you look at most tour pros you will see that they maintain almost 90deg of lag to the point where the club shaft is horizontal before impact. If you tape the NG infomercial and watch the golfers frame by frame, you will see that none of the amateurs and all but one of the pros maintain a similar degree of lag.

It has been my personal goal to be able to do this as lag is a major determinant of ultimate clubhead speed. I have finally found a way to do this and the results have been great.

Following is the post-

Begin Post:

In today's video work I tried to exagerate sustaining the lag in my swing. I found that I was able to do this by levering the club (pushig out with the left arm and pulling in with the right) and trying to maintain the
leverage as my body moves to impact position and my shoulders rotate.

In reviewing the video of my most successfully exagerated swings where it felt as though I never really 'let the club go' (it felt like a check swing in baseball where it is called a strike) I found that this feeling
corressponded to an almost perfect 'pro' impact position: left arm almost in line with shaft with hand slightly ahead of club head. Not nearly the check swing as I've seen it on TV though it felt that way.

I also felt that there was NO left wrist break down even after impact. There was a stronger feeling of rotation of the left wrist forearm through impact though I was not trying to rotate.

Even with a total focus on 'levering' the club I was unable to achive the 'pro' type positions at anything over a 3/4 swing. I think I now understand Butch's comments about how Tiger needed to get stronger to
keep a bowed wrist on his knockdown shots.

Given the effort I put in to get the visible results, I can not imagine a relaxed way of getting the same results unless it involved absolutely perfect timing of the acceleration (rhythm) of the swing.

I will try more work tomorrow as I think the 'levering' may be refined (in image) as maintaining a stiff left arm and a strong right arm pull to get the elbow in front of the hip.

End Post

Relative to Frosty's release question - this excercise has caused me to TOTALLY redefine what I feel is release. There is a STRONG rotational force through impact when you swing this way. Strong enough that you better have a good grip or the club will spin in your hands. I now better understand Scott's comments on the site that the grips need to be large enough that the club does not move in your hands and a comment to me in class that your grip strength is a limiting factor on your maximum swing speed.

I'd be curious about the results of any here who have done frame by frame analysis of their swings. Specifically what is the angle between your left arm and the club shaft when the shaft is horizontal in the downswing and what kind of swing do you use?

Peter
