Yesterday I asked a simple question requesting any Teachers to post their dates for 2010 feis's. My daugher is doing Yr12 and need to know asap for booking flights, especially now as there are alot of cheap fares going. Is there a problem asking this? - Just a guess but not confirmed - The Winter Solstice Feis always falls around the Winter Solsitce (obviously haha) which will be the 21st June 2010. The Gold Coast Feis is the week before that and the McAleer Feis the weekend before the Gold Coast Feis. - It is great if you want to do both having them a week apart for NZ dancers as they can go to one and then on to the other. The comps will bet more support if they are organised early with confirmation of dates, venue and ajudicators etc. This is why we chose Melbourne instead of Sydney last year as it was confirmed early. - I agree about having the comps close to where people can get to without having a car. I would love the Melbourne one to be a bit more central as I would like to fly in from NZ and keep costs down. If you stay our where the comp has been held it makes it hard to enjoy the city. - In Sydney in June we had 4 feis to choose from, it is not a matter of not supporting the WS it is a choice that we have and we are very grateful for. It's not that I wouldn't recieve a trophy, but because there was no competition for me.         I'm sad too, and especially that it has ended because the other Sydney schools chose not to support the WS. It was a tough competition, but very enjoyable because of all the differences, and we will really miss it.       - I always found the Winter Solstice fun. Its so great to be able to see my interstate friends at this comp and I've always loved the atmosphere and competitive spirit.   - The only problem with the McAleer feis is the trouble it is to get from Tullamarine. Last year it took my DD and I three hours to get to Langwarrin and cost quite a bit on trains and buses. Then the closest motel was still quite an expensive cab fare back and forth on both the days and then we had to get back to Tullamarine! Much as we loved doing the feis , it really cost a lot of money and was exhausting travel wise. Does anyone have any suggestions that would make it easier and less expensive?         I agree, 3 nights hotel and 3 days car hire is way too much to spend for a feis especially when you add on flights. Unfortunately unless these comps are held in easily accessible places that allow people to keep costs down, there will be many of us who can not afford upwards of $500 for a feis. Same goes for any interstate feis of course, not just this Vic comp, I am sure there were interstate people who couldn't afford to come to Sydney for WS, unfortunately our country is just too big and travel costs too high to do them all.       - No reality check needed here, my dd doesn't expect anything. If WS has ended we would like to find another feis of the same quality that is user friendly..ie easy to get to and affordable. We usually only go to comps we can drive back and forth to in a day, including WS, will just have to see if the family budget stretches to these more expensive options. A tank of petrol and a days food is much cheaper than 2 or three nights hotel, flight and car hire plus food, so no-one in our family is expecting to go thats for sure.       - What are you talking about? More dancers compete overseas these days and so it's imperative that they attend as many comps as possible in order to be up to scratch. With numbers dwindling in Irish dancing at local comps the only way to get decent competition is to travel interstate.         For the most part, people attend the available feis' in their state. Almost every dancer at our school attends every feis in ACT. Comps in ACT are few and sections small, 2 girls in 16yrs this year. If these dancers want to dance against more than one other , they have to travel. Most of us do the Sydney comps as they are accessible by car. We will mis the WS and hope something replaces it as it gives the dancers something to really work for in the lead up to States and Nationals. My dd always put her place at WS right up there with her place at Nationals as far as how important it is to her. (NT) -- CanberraMum, Sun, Nov 22 2009, 23:07:03"
        
        To win the Solstice was a tougher than winning Nationals....you had to compete against the boys as well as the excellent competitors from NZ and sometimes overseas. - My daughter competed in the WS for 8 years. it was the hardest competition of the year, having 3 overseas judges (not local) and competing against the boys. its a real shame it has come to and end, but unfortunately it didnt get the support from NSW schools. Is this right, there is no actual parking that belongs to the venue? "Mostly street parking - limited spaces at end of Harbour Street at the markets. Secure parking also available on Stewart Street."
Can someone from the Gong advise if the venue has parking?

Due to the response of the dance music timing tutorial I offered a few weeks ago, Diddlyi magazine is featuring a series on the topic! I'm addressing one tune type at a time with a timing diagram and a shortened narrative to fit the format. The first article, for which help is most frequently requested, is about understanding slip jigs. No knowledge of music reading or music time signatures is required to understand the timing. Wollongong Accomodation 2010 - Camden? -- Help, Wed, Nov 18 2009, 3:37:59"
We have family who live in Camden, and I'm wondering (as I'm not from NSW) if this would be reasonable to take our 8 year old straight to Nationals on the day of comp from Camden. Do you think it would be asking too much for her? I've been told it's about a 50 minute drive.

Thanks for any help. I've given up trying to find accomodation for 5 adults and 1 child.

- I have a different opinion. I think it depends on whether you want your daughter to be able to dance as best as possible. Chances are she might be a little tired with a 4:30am start and it might spoil her first nationals. - I really don't think a 50 minute drive would be a problem as long as she gets to bed early the night before. Think about it, every Nationals would see local people possibly be driving that far from their homes to the dancing every year. Even an 8am start would not mean she needs to get up at 4,30, you would need to leave at say 6am to be there by 7am, you could get up at 5,30am and have plenty of time to get ready and do her wig and makeup when you get to the venue. If you email Wollongong Tourism Board they'll actually email you back a word document specifically for accomodation during the Irish Dancing Nationals on what is available still in the area (and those that aren't have been marked with an x). - Hobart hotel website for the hotel we wanted said it was booked, but when I called they told me that they HAVE to keep a certain amount of rooms available for 'walk-ins'. Often times a hotel will tell you they are booked out (especially a year in advance) but they will still have a percentage of rooms available anyway. The only way they can be sure that they will end up with the room being used is if they make us pay up front and not do refunds... not happy about that idea.
