Subject: A question on the abortion issue
In reply to: Jean 's message, "article about abortion...WARNING! NOT for the tender hearted" on 11:24:14 01/23/06 Mon

Those who know me know that abortion was one of the issues that turned me from Libertarian to the Constitution party. I recently had a discussion with a MoLib (Mormon Libertarian) regarding abortion. Without disclosing his identity, I am going to put part of a recent email from him, here. I would like your comments.

"As for your concern over abortion: The debate is endlessly ongoing between the extremes in this issue (in and out of the LP). Some want the government to force all pregnant women to at least consider having an abortion and provide all services for them no matter the choice. Others would have those who perform any abortive procedure (including D.N.C. and many hysterectomies), as well as the women requesting them, imprisoned as murderers. I personally believe that abortion for the sake of convenience or for “birth control” is simply murder. The government should not pay for or promote such action. I do, however, feel that there are circumstances where ending a pregnancy may be justified and that the line between the two may sometimes become blurred. Therefore, I believe that the choice should be up to the individual who will have to live with her decision…the woman…with the council of her husband, family, medical professional, and her G(g)od. Government should stay out of it completely. It’s a difficult enough situation without “them.”

Yes, every child that is conceived should, ideally, have a right to life. However, the interjection of due process into every abortion would have devastating effects due to evolving and ever-changing public values. How could a court rule in every abortion? Should “all”, “most” or “every other” fetus(es) have the right to live? Under what specific criterion may one (ten? fifty?) fetus(es) be allowed to die? Placing a definitive value on which fetus may, or may not live is incalculable. Consider a related ideal: The Proclamation on the Family states that (paraphrased) every child has the right to be raised by a mother and a father in a Gospel centered home. Sounds wonderful! But does that mean that any child not born in the Covenant should be taken from their parent(s) and adopted out to temple worthy LDS families? Should decidedly non-LDS women be sterilized to keep them from having children? Should LDS women be made to have 4, 5, …10 children? Sound ridiculous? Yet I have heard “good” LDS express opinions which ultimately support such things! Can you imagine what would happen if opinions such as these became public policy? (Nazi Germany comes to mind!) The real problems over the abortion issue, and many other issues, will only end when there is no possibility for one group to have power over another (clearly an original intent of the Constitution). That, I believe, is the basis for the LP’s position on abortion. The “choice” should be left to those that must choose. They will, in the end, be judged for their decision as will we all. Just keep government out of it! “They” should have no place in the process at all."
