Oh you poor souls Karen and Kay! Fancy having to wait so long for Mitch when you're hearing all the good reports of it from the likes of Janet and I & Leila!

Are you any closer to getting a copy yet? I'm so thankful that Janet was kind enough to get me a copy while in U.K. or I'd be in the same boat as you two.

Anyway, as you say I'm sure I'll hear the cries of 'Bloody Yum Yum' (to quote John's character Stan Hardwicke)all the way to Queensland when you do get it!

Janet, I've now seen the episode with John breaking out in the same song as he did Home to Roost "I do Like to be Beside the Seaside". Perhaps a fave of John's?

But I was also chuffed to see in another episode where he does what I think is a 'dead-on' Tommy Cooper impersonations!!! (one of my fave comedians). Certainly something to look out for Gals!

Tho Mitch says he supposed to be Les Dawson. I suspect he's being tongue-in-cheek. I have heard of Les Dawson, but as I'm not real familiar with his style of humour I can't really say if Mitch is copying him or not. Can any of you English John fans enlighten me as to what kind of comic Les Dawson was? But looking at that scene, it sure looked like pure Tommy Cooper to me!

In fact throughout Mitch, Mitch seems to break out into funny accents and the like, quite a lot. That's another thing I like about the show, as you never know when a scene like that is going to turn up. I wonder if John had a bit of free reign to ham it up a bit when he got the chance? If so,I'm guessing he would have loved that!

Cheers

Hi Theresa,

I still haven't received "Mitch" yet. Kay and I are both having hissy fits over the delay. There's a hold-up with Amazon UK's supplier and also Choices UK. I had pre-ordered too.
All the delicious things I'm reading about John and his performance and how he looks, etc., etc. have me drooling and ready to order from another source if it doesn't soon show up.
I fell in love with the Mitch as soon I watched the first
episode from the video of it. I don't much care about the
substance of the stories because it sounds like there is alot of substance when it comes to John. As Kay says, "I'd be happy just watching him read the phone book."
I have a feeling like they'll have to call out the fire brigade when Kay and I finally lay eyes on John as Mitch.

You'll hear the cries and sighs of delight all the way to Queensland.

Take care, mate. Cheers, Karen

I thought i'd let you all know that i've had some bad news, on Sunday night i got a phone call from my friend's brother to tell me she had died, only thing was it was 15th September she had died and her brother only seen fit to let me know on Sunday, so i'm a little angry to say the least, as we were best mates, and until Theresa became my friend the only friend i had.

Karen (who lived in Kent, UK) and i had been friends since 1983 and that's a long time and to hear she had died chasing the dog across the road and hit by a car, and i didn't get a chance to say goodbye it's really shook me up!

The brother and her dad have no excuse, i think the reason is they forgot about me, and because i sent Karen a birthday card for 16th October (not knowing she had died), they must have got it last Saturday and realised they had to let me know.

Anyway just thought i'd let you all know, my head is a bit all over the place at the moment, but when i've calmed down i want to get the Oxford stuff sorted out and sent to Joe for the site, i haven't forgotten.
Take care everyone
Janet.

Hello – So who’s now seen any of the episodes of the newly released DVD of the series ‘Mitch’ that John did in the 1980’s? What do you think of it? Of the 3 Discs, I’m half way through Disc 2 and it’s growing on me every minute!

Some of the camera work especially in the first episodes where they jumped a bit too suddenly between scene after scene – seem to me a bit - well - like they were trying too hard to be dramatic and it didn’t always work.

Also some of interaction between say Mitch and various female characters occasionally seems a bit corny and old fashioned as does some of the office banter generally– but I guess that’s just the times. However, I do pretty much like the relationship between Mitch and his main ‘squeeze’ played by Clare Higgins. Their interaction seems quite believable & well acted.

Also I have to give a big THUMBS UP to the way the series increasingly depicts story lines that are very believable. The series clearly came to place a big emphasis on ensuring an accurate and realistic depiction of procedures within, and the interaction between, the Police, the newspaper & journalists, and various social workers. Even the interaction of all these people with the wider community and the depiction of the criminal world seem very believable to me.

At times some of the episodes feel like an impressive docu-drama to me. The episodes I particularly liked in this respect so far are ‘Whom Shall Remain Anonymous’ (looking at racial and crime related issues) and ‘Squealer’ (dealing with the dilemma’s posed in providing favours to a police pimp for valuable information). Also Pete Postlewaite was in this one! Another actor I really like & I’d never seen him act in anything with John before now! Oliver Ford-Davies of ‘Kavanagh’ fame also comes into this episode briefly.

The issues and types of relationships that episodes of this sort depict I think ring just as true and relevant today as they did in the 80’s.

For all main players in the series, the acting generally is top class. But I think in these particularly ‘heavy’ realistic story lines, John Thaw is given a chance to really ‘show his stuff’ at it’s best! And he doesn’t disappoint. He really gets his teeth into it. Those are the times when the show really has me on the edge of my seat.

Such a shame then that with such effort and sincerity put into performances and into the very pertinent story-lines, that London Weekend Television decided not to continue the series.

I have to say a big THANK YOU to Janet, who shouted me this DVD on our recent trip to Oxford.

I’d be interested to know what others think of ‘Mitch’. Any thoughts?

Cheers
Theresa H
