Jeff came to a halt, panting heavily and staring at her. "No big deal?" He shook his head. "You're acting...really strange, Alexis...." Clutching at the stitch in his side, he tried to look stern. "What's going on with you, anyway? Look at you---you look almost ill. You...you're not ill, are you?" He leaned forward, suddenly concerned.

Angie snorted, rolling her eyes. "I found us a place to camp, Angie," she said to herself in a mocking voice. Grumbling, she rolled to her feet and dusted herself off, noting a few extra bruises from her tumble. "Rotten bloody ingrates," she muttered, glancing darkly up the path. "I ought to just leave them. Bet they wouldn't last a day in the East without me. Hell, they wouldn't even get over the mountains."

"Just a minute!" she called in a falsely bright voice, and pulled from her hair the remains of the reeds she had used to bind it that morning. It tumbled down her back in loose curls that might have been pretty, had they not been matted and dirty. She was sick of this mission, sick of the high-and-mighty Alexis and the spoiled brat Jeff, sick of the constant presence of the lir-creatures. She wanted to run free again, to wander unfettered in the wild lands and never have to think about these ridiculous beings again.

Once we're over, I'll ditch them, she thought with finality. I've had enough of this.

She walked serenely up the path, listening to their voices up ahead.

Gwenneveire nearly wilted with relief, leaning against Monet's shoulder briefly. ::Thank you,:: she whispered. ::I am sorry, dear friend, for my dependence...I don't know what to do with myself, lately.::
