Jeff's eyes grew very wide as Gabriel spoke. He listened very carefully, and spent a long moment in silence, contemplating what he had heard. Gwenneth lifted her head from her paws and looked up at him curiously; her breath caught in her throat, wondering if Gabriel had actually gotten through to him.
Jeff raised his storm-grey eyes to Gabriel's glowing yellow, took a deep breath, and said quietly:
"I understand perfectly."
But before Gwenneth could even widen her eyes, he continued. "You are right, Gabriel-- I do not know you. And d'you know what? I don't want to. I think you're mad and dangerous. I don't want to hear anything else about your pagan life, or the 'magic of the earth' or any of that crap. I just want to go home! Why don't you leave me alone? Can't you accept that we're different, and we'll always be different? Just let me go! I don't want to see you ever again and if that stupid wolf doesn't stop staring at me I'm gonna EXPLODE!!"
With a snarl curling his lip, Jeff threw himself out the tent's entrance and staggered to his feet.
::Wait,:: Gwenneth said desperately to Gabriel and Rio. ::Please, don't be angry. He doesn't understand... I'll go after him if you'll help me, Rio; Gabriel, would you please alert the young lady Alexis? She may be the only one who can sway him.::

Outside, Jeff stared wildly at the group around the campfire. The two Jellicles, creatures straight out of a nightmare, glared at him with hateful bright eyes, and the grubby young g.irl glared right back at him.
"Hey!" Angie cried, indignant. "What's with you, bursting out like that? Did the wolf try to eat you, or something?" Chuckling at her own wit, the g.irl returned to her meat. Kalea stared at her incredulously.
Breathing heavily, Jeff ran, leaving the circle of light cast by the campfire. He stumbled blindly through the darkness, certain that this all had to be a horrible nightmare.
Gwenneth raced out of the tent, paused only briefly to catch her boy's scent, and dashed after him.
"Aren't we uptight tonight," Angie commented snidely, wiping the grease from her lips with the back of an arm. "What's gotten into everyone?"
"Nashy, the boy," Kalea said, rising to her feet and ignoring Angie. "Should we help?"
