Ocean Air's original rudder broke off at the water line in 1999. After much thought and consultation the new one was built (by a highly skilled woodworker)from laminated Ash and Pitch Pine and then covered (by me)in heavy duty woven glass rovings and epoxy.

The thought behind this was that Sledge Hammer handles are made of Ash, as it has a very high resistance to shock and general stress, also all the grain of the wood would be in a vertical direction and therefore unlikely to snap off at the water line.

A T250 owner that I knew (he has since sold his boat) built a new rudder from 2 sheets of Plywood and glass cloth at roughly the same time (I still have the photos). It broke off at the waterline during its second season! Plywood has 50% of the wood grain running in the wrong direction for this task.

Ocean Air's rudder is as good as new and has been through some pretty rough stuff in its first 6 seasons. I know I can trust it.

Cheers,

Alan.
