We have the original roller boom reefing system on Samara, a 500/501.

I think it works very well if there are just 2 of you, but can imagine it as a handful if you wanted to do solo work.

The luff og the sail is triky to get flat when you have some reef's in, but the favoured way around that is to roll in the sailbag near the mast. Provides just the right level of tension.

I'd be wary, VERY wary, of thinking about conversions early on, even though thats exactly what I thought when buying SAMARA last season. There will be plenty of demand for your cash elsewhere on the boat as you get her tailored to your living/sailing requirements.

I may yet put slab reeing on her, but I'd rather fit genny tracks first and get the roller genny performing better!

Neil
