my answer when single handing was to reduce the main by 2 or 3 rolls.....BEFORE leaving harbour ...the perfomance loss was virtually nil (dartmouth/cherbourg 17 hrs, chi/ cherbourg 11 hrs\) if you need to reduce more than that you really should be bringing it down and sailing on the head sail alone, and its easy enough to roll away the head sail a bit. You arent going to be going to windward in anything much over a 6 anyway and a pocket handkerchief size headsail will give you 7 knots downwind in a 6 or over ..or allow you to hold station trying to get up wind or waiting for the life boat .... (been there, force 8 off Sylt in the German Bight)
