speaking for trapper 500,s and theres not a lot of differance between 500,s and 501,s Id say that neither is an ideal choice for a first cruiser. Dinghy experience helps with some classes of bigger boat but it all depends what the dinghy was.

comparing a trapper 500 with say, a Carter 30 both are sloop rigged yachts and there the similarity ends! trapper are light on the helm when set up properly and very quick to tack, I never ever got the headsail through during the tack on sula and always had to use the winch handle. With the carter I ALWAYS had the sail cleated before the tack was complete, without the handle .

Trappers a VERY manouverable under engine, surprisingly so in a tight space, they pretty well pivot on the centre of the keel if handled right.

single handing is fine without any extra bits added to a standard rig, all you have to do is think ahead. Ive single handed Sula from northern holland to chichester, chichester to plymouth then across to cherbourg and back to chichester and Chichester to Lindisfarne
the trick is to choose and set your sail plan BEFORE you slip your moorings I used mostly 3 rolls in the main and full no2 genny and typically I crossed from Dartmouth to Cherbourg in 17 hours with a SW3/4

Western Isles I would guess it will mostly be 4/5 rolls in the main and maybe 5/8 in a no 2 genny
(its what I used 2 up f4/5 Honfleur to Poole 10.5 Hrs)

Ummm I never thought of that!! windstrength equals rolls in the main? any comments from anyone?

PS trappers will maintain 7 knots reaching across a f4 in flattish water on just a no 2 genny(NO MAIN), (backwards and forwards across Cherbourg Grand Rade)...and Ive done 10knots down the Solent running by the lea

John
