Interesting that a Volvo Penta 2020 fits in a 501, which should be similar to a 500. I had specifically requested one from a Volvo agent in Italy and it was their report that advised that it would not fit and they proposed a Yanmar, for which they were NOT agents. However, being Italy, a devious solution was found by contracting another supplier for whom the Volvo agent then worked, although all the receipts were somehow falsified to not show who had done the work as the VP franchise stipulated no other make could be supplied.

From what you tell me I now suspect that the Yanmar may have been the easier solution as it replaced an original Yanmar with little modification and the Volvo agent was fibbing about the space problem. Or, just as likely, more profit was involved with the Yanmar installation.
