Hi Don,
Bought myself a 300 in Dec 2000, having graduated from dinghy sailing. I fell in love with its sleek lines, dreaming of gentle sailing in the Thames Estuary, tiller in one hand, Gin and tonic in the other.
Well it didnt work out quite like that!, The 300 is a Racer/Cruiser, not a Cruiser/racer, very tender, well heeled over in even a modest breeze.the sails having to be worked constantly to keep it on its feet.
The yacht is relatively light and motoring into any sort of sea or into a head wind stops it in its tracks, where a heavier vessel might plough through. Dont get me wrong, its a sturdy and well made vessel but in the hands of the inexperienced is a wee bit alarming, burying its rails well under water, at this point I chicken out and start praying.
After four seasons I am starting to gain more confidence, but still find it a bit of a handfull.
Because it is light, any sort of fouling will quickly affect its performance, so it has to be regulally scrubbed off. In full flight it leaves others standing and will keep pointing very high when other yachts are having to put in a tack.
I belong to a club on the Thames with a quay to dry out against, so scrubbing off between tides is a cheap and easy job.
Other than all this, I love it to bits.
Good Luck! John.
