For the sort of trip you describe I think I would be happier with the right sails for the job.
It sounds as if you need an intermediate sail between your storm and your present jib.
It is, of course, possible to have reef points sewn into your existing sail.
Force 7 single handed eh! I suppose there was knowhere to run to, what shelter is there at Margate?
