Perhaps I’m missing something here. I have absolutely no experience of professional yacht surveys; over the years I have bought four yachts when perhaps I should have got a survey but together with knowledgeable friends and my own poking around have been lucky.
The point is, doesn’t a survey merely inform a potential buyer of the condition of the yacht so that an informed decision can be made whether to run, buy or negotiate based on uncovered problems? Does a marine surveyor also give a valuation? If so, I’m beginning to see where you are coming from. But I would still favour going it alone based on my own assessment and judgement of the market rather than fork out for the considerable cost of a professional survey just to wave at your broker. Particularly in your case John, you knew Sula inside out and could have made an extensive list of all points in the classic pro forma that marine surveyors use.
Presumably a potential buyer expects a survey to formally document enough deficiencies to get the price reduced to cover the cost of the survey. Now you are proposing that the seller get a survey to substantiate the asking price, which has to be more than it otherwise would be to cover the cost of the survey.
