Russ, I suspect you are too modest and that your racing performance has as much to do with your own abilities and determination as your Trapper.

Of course the 500/501 has that indefinable mixture of intrinsic strength and build weight to give stability and at the same time good immersed lines for performance. The sailplan with inset shrouds enable headsail sheeting for optimal upwind pointing ability. In short, the sailing qualities are everything you say.

I have looked at comparable boats at many boat shows throughout Europe, even as far afield as Asia at one point, and have never found anything approaching it for comfort and seaworthiness without moving up a couple of metres in overall length – with the corresponding and astronomical price increase, of course.

But all this does not reflect in the second-hand market pricing. To write, as you do, “its about time we all held out for more realistic values, drive the prices up” is just not realistic; ‘the market is always right’. There is always someone, somewhere, who will break ranks and, with yard bills pressing for every day the boat isn’t sold, will sell for less. Price precedent sets the market rate; prospective buyers, supported by brokers, will always use recent, previous prices to justify their offers – only general, inflationary tendencies will alter that.

And do we really want it to be any other way? If we did we would ourselves have paid more when we bought. Who amongst us bought their Trapper new? Not many, I suspect. We have ourselves benefited from the somewhat lower prices and those, like myself, who bought while the model was still being produced, thus making a price benchmark at that time, which has not applied for close on 20 years at least, have had many years of enjoyment with a depreciation infinitely less than any other purchase we have made, houses and property excepted. So the present prices are not going to make us rich if we want to sell – but how rich did your last car make you when you traded it in?

Regards, Brian.
