Kim, with the other forum your embarrassment would have been avoided - you could have gone back to edit your original post yourself.

But of course, we don't want to change what ain't broke, do we? Nah, why should we want all these new-fangled bits an' bobs?

Back in the 70's I crossed the North Sea every year from the Northeast coast with my only navigation equipment being the kitchen radio (the wife complained when I took it) with a modified antenae coil to extend the long wave to receive the radio beacons. It wasn't very good and my DR wasn't too accurate (it was usually too cloudy to take any sights with my ex-WD aircraft sextant) - I had to steer well north to know to turn right when I met the Dutch coast to sail down until I could see a landmark to recognise where I was.

Now I sail with two GPSs, one connected to a PC running OziExplorer and can immediately know within a few meters where I am. My waypoints tell me the course to steer; the time I will arrive; my speed through the water, over the ground.

How decadent I have become in my old age; after all, I survived all those crossings, I really didn't have to change something that wasn't broke. Did I?

Best, Brian.
