Nick, I see from my notes made during a recent web search that the series ran: YSE8 1973-1976, YSB8 1976-1977, YSM8 1977-1981.
You must be correct about the YSB being a alloy gearbox version of the YSE because both the YSB and YSM had that, but the YSM was even more developed, including the single lever control possibility.
So the Trapper 500/501 range through the years just installed the current 8HP Yanmar, with both coming to an end of their range in 1981. No connection, I'm sure.
