Thanks to everyone for those useful answers.
We have a possible wheeze to put-put right down the Thames to the sea, from Chertsey where our boat is stored, as we want to sail the east coast this summer. If we can gain enough confidence about raising the mast when on the water ...
We won't be lifting the engine out of the well when sailing despite promise of improved performance, being cautious, inexperienced and not gorillas. But it seems that a new 2 stroke is probably the answer even so. Just hope it's considerably less unpleasant than our current one.
