Hope all is going to plan for you Paul!

I tried a 24 volt cordless drill on my winch. It wound it down ok, but wouldn't wind it up at all. An electric trailer winch might do the job but I wouldn't like to lose the manual fail safe aspect. Its not so bad though, I have just been out for a quick sail and two of us wound the keel up without any stress between putting the mainsail cover on and all the other bits of tidying away that have to be done. It's a fairly easy wind and you can stop for a break any time, it can't run back.

All these trials are the price you pay for an 1197lb lifting bulbed fin keel I suppose. It's worth it for the performance you get, after 10 seasons I'm still hooked!

Cheers,

Alan
