When fitting a new engine (the one before last) I fitted a hatch in the cockpit sole.

I did this to make it easier to fit the engine, but I have to say it proved invaluable.

I could access the rear engine mounts, the cockpit drain seacocks, the sterngland and the gearbox dipstick on the engine.

It meant I no longer needed to empty the starboard locker to get at any of these parts of the boat which is a real benefit.

If you decide to take this route though, I recommend a high quality hatch and only a small one. The larger and cheaper ones are not up to the job
