Paul,
I first used a 5hp Yamaha single cylinder which was ok but gutless as soon as the breeze picked up. I then managed to get my hands on an 8hp twin cylinder 2stroke yamaha and this was even worse than the 5hp UNTIL i put on a "sail drive" prop (bigger blades and pitch) Oh boy what a difference. I am not sure if the larger prop is available for the smaller engines. I do find getting it in and out a lot more difficult than the 5hp but I feel the extra grunt when required, is worth the hassle. the most difficult part is getting it out of the locker. it drops in the hole relativly quite easily. I agree its a lot more thirsty than the 5hp but I reach cruising speeds in flat water (5 knots)at about 1/2 throttle so the noise level is fairly low and being twin cylinder not much vibration.
I am also yet to be convinced of a 4stroke . I know they use less fuel but I have sailed with a boat that has a single cylinder 5 hp and the vibration drove me mad after 2 hours. the twin cylinder though is a different story. very very smooth and quite. the only problem is I am not sure if there is enough space to get a twin four stroke in the hole or the bigger problem is getting it in and out the locker. The 4strokes can only be laid down on 1 side only this is so the sump doesnt drain into the cylinders (I think) which does damage to the engine.
I do have a bigger fuel bill but the twin cylinder 8hp with the bigger prop is, I think superb. and I have used it in anger when I was hit by a line squall with peak winds of 41 knotts and the eight managed to hold me in position in a very crowded area in amongst a lot of moorings. I let the bow blow round, stuck it in reverse gave it the lots of wellie and we held position using the wind to keep me in line, for approx 3-4 mins while the worst blew through. no drama and totaly incontrole( I still cant spell)then ferry glided backward into the jetty.
Oh by the way the 8hp is a short shaft and i have stood the boat on its beam ends coming over the Deban Bar and buried the nose so the fore hatch was under the water and the prop didnt come out of the water.
hope this might be of use
Kim
