Not too sure the helicopter comparison is too valid, to land a helo without engine power, you let the blades free run as you fall, as you fall through the air the blades get spun up. When you are very close to the ground you reverse the pitch and rely on the built up kinetec energy to keep the blades spinning long enough to provide sufficient thrust/lift to slow the descent. Don't think that is the case with a boat prop.

Anyway, back to the point .... I also let mine spin, I used to lock it by sticking the engine into reverse (forward gear still let it spin). Unfortunately I lost reverse a few years back so goodbye to that plan. Have to say that the only difference I've noticed is increased noise levels .... but I would prefer to lock it if I could.
