Thank you for the suggestions and help. Our final solution was a ss tank, fabricated by a local (Oxon) engineer. Capacity increased from 25 to 60 litres and located in the same position as the old tank (Aft facing bulk head in forward end of st/bd cockpit locker). The fuel level problem solved by a sight tube (plastic) on the side of the tank (as in the old one) protected by ss channel lined with wood protruding beyond the diameter of the tube. We now have the range to motor all the way from Poole to Cherbourg without the hassle of refueling on route if the wind doesn't play ball.
