The TS240 has an easily driven hull so doesn't really need a huge outboard. To get the best from the boat under sail you need to take the engine out of the well, so it needs to be light enough to handle when things are jumping about at sea.

I agree with Kim that a two stroke is easier to stow, and lighter for the same HP than a four stroke. I have had a Mercury 5 for years with no probs, but I race the boat most of the time and only use the motor when I have to.

The well is an amplifier and I think most engines will be noisy in it. One option would be to permanently plug the well, put a bracket on the back and have any size outboard you like. This brings the problem of prop out of water when pitching, but stops you having to lug it around and frees up locker space. Can't help thinking that if you need a big motor on a light boat like the TS you may have bought the wrong sort of boat.

Sail her, you will love it!!!

Cheers,

Alan.
