My boat Ocean Air has a coachroof mounted winch to lift the keel. It isn't a modification, she was built that way (1985 by Northshore I think) and the whole gubbins is different to the hydraulic arrangement.

The main differences are that the keel is one piece all the way to the top, without the fabricated metal box that bolts on to the hydraulic type, and it has two eye bolts tapped into it for the lifting block attachments.

As the keel is the same length as the hydraulic version plus its box, but solid casting throughout, it is a fair bit heavier.

As there is no box on the top the keel the keel casing has been made narrower than other versions and has 3" webs right down the forward and aft faces, for stiffening I suppose.

As for lifting, it is quite hard work being about 150 turns from down to up. I also get through quite a lot of blocks, ball blocks make life easier when they are new but chafe out in no time. The up side is that it is very easy to maintain and the lifting line (12mm dyneema) is not prone to stranding etc. No such thing as a free lunch I guess!

I have no idea how many were built like mine. Northshore kept no record of the TS240s and T501s they built for Trappers, there is no hull number or anything.

Cheers,

Alan.
