Nick, I had my main cut with no roach and so get no boom droop at all.

I had intended to find and fit a gate so all the slides can chunter down past the entry opening - I want to have the option to just drop the sail with a lashing to the boom when under pressure - a common scenario when I'm alone and a blast of wind hits; your idea could be an interim solution, thanks for that.

Because somehow I really like the roller boom reefing - I remember my first small cruiser had it too (don't ask how many lifetimes ago that was) but it was a bronze handle and ratchet claw on a toothed ring at the gooseneck, which is very old-fashioned but could be operated at any angle of boom to mast, so the functionality was better than what I have now.

My genoa is also very big but I can get that furled in a flash. You write that most of your reefing is made on the genoa but that doesnt help when the full main is too much for the weight of wind and the boat is not properly balanced.

No, it's the main that's the headache. I've agonised over an in-mast furling system but the prospect of a jam plus the cost has deterred me. At least with the headsail furling you could motor round in circles with the sheets let go from the clew - although I'm sure that's easier in theory than practice.

A very interesting thread.

Best,

Brian.
