I might be preaching to the converted here, but one thing you mentioned that would be worth while emphasising to every-one, is that houshold cable WILL corrode fairly quickly and that any-one thinking of re-wiring really should used TINNED wire as this slows down the corrosion process. I know its not as easily available but it is worth it in the long term. On my 240 I had a problem with the forward Nav lights and on removing panaling(2 hours) found a connector block stuck to the deck head with the remains of the wires connected. A fire hazard waiting to happen.
