Frank, I’m not qualified to comment on your propeller problem but can only say that my own 12in, fixed 3-blade one does not give any noticeable steering bias or need any correction to maintain a straight course.

>>Does moubting the pilot there work in practice?<<
My own Autohelm 1000 (present incarnation the Raymarine ST1000) socket is 45cm from the forward edge of the starboard locker top and 12cm from the inboard edge, probably too far forward as discussed in another thread but the unit works perfectly under power. It is so essential for cruising and I wouldn’t like to go to sea without it, especially when single handing where I engage it for all the many things that need leaving the helm for. Having said that, my tiller clamp did take over some of the duties this year, but when keeping a straight course is essential, such as anchoring or picking up a buoy, I’d still flip the Autohelm onto the tiller.

The push rod is rigid when static and can exert a thrust/power of 125lbs – more than enough for our Trappers, even those with dodgy helm characteristics!!!

Best,

Brian
