You might be... Diving does use this system i believe, as do things like gymnastics and ski-jumping. The new system used for ice-skating will also do this sort of thing (as well as randomly discarding 5 judges marks for no apparent reason).

http://mathcs.muhlenberg.edu/~rykken/skating-full.pdf explains the old system (skating system), the new system (similar to diving with added random element), and the system used from 98-2003 (paired comparison)...
