It is my considered opinion that the new system for figure skating isn't worth the paper it is printed on. It is a complete load of tosh.

How would you react if we ran a general election, then threw away 30% of the ballot papers at random? Choosing random judges introduces a probabilistic element to the scoring - e.g. given a set of marks, couple A have a 70% probability of winning. So if the exact same event happened twice with identical marks, two different results could ensue!

Figure skating have a history of cock-ups in this area. The last paired-comparison system they introduced was specifically to solve inconsinstency wrt contractions - a mathematician proposed the only possible system that does not suffer from this (Kemeny), but they ignored him and adopted Condorcet - which suffers just as badly from contraction as their old system! D'Oh!

At least the skating world will consider new systems (however misguidedly) instead of rejecting them on principle.

Incidentally, the paired-comparisons in the team match take place at the university-level - i.e. deciding which uni wins overall etc. - the judges' marks are still handled with the good ol' skating system.
