Subject: Meaningful Individual Results in Varsity (for mathmos only!)

For those who are unaware of the fact, the Varsity scoring system is equivalent to
* Cambridge scores 1 point for each time a judge marks a Cambridge couple ahead of an Oxford couple
* Oxford scores 1 point for each time a judge marks an Oxford couple ahead of a Cambridge couple
and then adding 800 points onto the score of each university.

[Eg if a judge's sheet went OOCOCOCC, then the top Cambridge couple beat 2 Oxford couples, the second Cambridge couple beat 1 Oxford couple, and the bottom two Cambridge couples beat no Oxford couples, so Cambridge scores 2+1+0+0=3 points for this sheet, while Oxford score 4+4+3+2=13 points]

However, the current marking system is unfair when comparing couples within a university, as you only dance against couples in your same heat, dancing against them twice. So Cambridge couples in the same heat as better Cambridge couples will tend to score worse than Cambridge couples in the same heat as worse Cambridge couples.

In my view, the only "fair" way to compare couples within a university is to see who compares best against couples of the other university - as this would now give a non-biased sample.

As an example, you could rate a Cambridge couple by the total number of Oxford couples they beat in the judges sheets, and an Oxford couple by the total number of Cambridge couples that they beat in the judges sheets. This has the advantages that it is independent of the way in which each university is split into heats. It also meaningfully represents the "true" contribution of that couple to the team match.

As an exercise, I've rated all of the couples by this system, and will post in as a follow-up to this message...

Paul
