SHARON —
Well before Mariah Mazyck knew she was going to be a contestant in the Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA pageant, the 16-year-old and her sisters were practicing their skills around the house.
A junior at Sharon High School, Mariah, her friends and her sisters Cherade Townsend and Miridia Grisett practiced their runway walk in heels just for fun.
In addition to their mother, Charlene Norris, who did some modeling when the girls were small, they’ve taken cues from the casts of television show “America’s Next Top Model,” Cherade said.
Cherade has been helping Mariah get ready for the pageant, which will be Nov. 23-25 at the Pittsburgh Hyatt Regency hotel. The winner of the pageant represents the commonwealth in the Miss Teen USA pageant.
Ms. Norris sent in Mariah’s photograph after they received a letter from the pageant seeking contestants.
After a telephone interview, Mariah was selected to compete in the pageant, which she is looking at as a learning experience.
Ms. Norris said she was pretty confident Mariah would be chosen as a contestant.
“I think she’s beautiful, but all parents think that,” she said.
Sandra Campbell, a friend of the family who has watched Mariah grow up, wasn’t surprised that the girl was selected and said she thinks she has a good shot at winning.
“She’s very sweet, loving and kind,” Ms. Campbell said. “And very spirtual.”
She said Mariah is a good and loyal friend, a patient person and a good teacher.
Ms. Campbell noted Mariah’s talents in music and dance, though she said the girl is modest.
“We have a very rising star in Mariah,” she said. “She has a wonderful gift.”
Mariah was in a pageant once when she was younger, she said, and has performed in many talent shows and churches around the area.
Mariah likes to sing and dance and does so a lot with her sisters at home and throughout the community.
There’s no talent portion in the pageant, which is a bit of a bummer, but Mariah is excited.
The pageant includes an interview, and swimsuit and gown competion. Being on stage doesn’t bother Mariah.
“I don’t think I’ll be nervous until the day,” Mariah said. “I’m more excited.”
At school, Mariah keeps busy as a member of the track team, Tiger Kittens, chorus, drama club, talent search and the cultural diversity club. She’s also involved at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Sharon.
Mariah said she wants to go to college and eventually become a pediatrician. Her favorite subjects are math, science and Spanish, she said.
“I definitely want to go to college, but if there’s a chance for me to become a singer, then I want to take that chance,” Mariah said.
Ms. Norris said she’s very proud of her daughter, who also gets good grades.
“My mom’s been a big inspiration,” Mariah said. “She always says she’s my biggest fan. She always tells me that I can do all things through Christ.”
“I think people get something out of being around Mariah,” Ms. Campbell said. “She exudes that wonderfulness.”
