24 Drinking Arrests at Home of Miss Connecticut Outstanding Teen, MADD Volunteer
Wednesday, February 25, 2009

Print ShareThisWOLCOTT, Conn. — The reigning Miss Connecticut Outstanding Teen, a volunteer for Mothers Against Drunk Driving, held a party that resulted in two dozen people being charged with underage drinking, police said Wednesday.

Rachael Ramonas, 17, once organized a benefit for the families of friends killed in a car crash in which the teen behind the wheel had a history of drunken driving, according to the Web site of Miss America's Outstanding Teen.

It's not clear whether Ramonas, who competed in the Miss America Outstanding Teen pageant in August in Florida, was among those charged. Police are not releasing the teens' names because they are juveniles, and no teens are charged with drunken driving.

Ramonas, a high school senior, is an honor and AP student, according to the Web site of Miss America's Outstanding Teen.

She has been dancing for 15 years, training in ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical and pointe, the site said. She is also a choreographer at a local dance center.

Officers responding to an anonymous call about underage drinking Saturday night found beer, rum and items commonly used for a drinking game called beer pong.

Ramonas' parents were out of the state when police arrived, said Domenic Angiolillo, police captain in Wolcott, about 30 miles southwest of Hartford.

The Miss Outstanding Teen contest promotes academic and creative achievements. Ramonas received a $2,000 scholarship.

As part of her yearlong reign, Ramonas agreed to work with the Connecticut chapter of MADD, which calls drinking the nation's biggest youth drug problem.

"At this point we'll have to re-evaluate that (relationship) and see if she holds herself accountable with hosting that party," said Janice Heggie Margolis, executive director of MADD's Connecticut chapter.

"I'm hoping she feels very bad and embarrassed," Margolis said.

Denise Ramonas told reporters Wednesday that her daughter's behavior was out of character.

"It was just a judgment call, a poor judgment call, and this is what happened," she said.

Ramonas' parents also released a statement saying she didn't drink any alcohol and none of the other people at the house that night was found to be under the influence of alcohol. They didn't say whether their daughter was charged.

Pageant officials are deciding whether to take action. Ramonas' term ends in June.

Ramonas had apparently planned a low-key gathering, but friends invited friends and it got out of hand, Angiolillo said.

Police issued 24 tickets for possession of alcohol by a minor. The infraction carries a $136 fine and an automatic driver's license suspension of at least 30 days.

"It's not the end of the world. It's not the crime of the century," Angiolillo said. "It's just a shame, that's all. You have to take responsibility for your actions."

Come on girls, she has brains. She is an RN specializing in premature babies. Her answers generally were good, but not perfect. Now my real question at this point is ... why in the world would someone feel "obligated" to be mean in their response? Its not a have to, its a choice.A choice no one should choose. You girls can do better than that. Also I am pleased with the winner this year, Kate may just do the trick for Delaware. Lets hope!

Weymouth woman crowned Miss Massachusetts USA

By Ed Baker
Mon Dec 01, 2008, 04:20 PM EST

Weymouth -

Alison Cronin had no desire to compete in a beauty pageant while she was growing up in Weymouth.

“I did not wear dresses until I was in fifth grade,” said Alison, 21, who became Miss Massachusetts USA during a recent pageant in Boston. “If you asked me back then about wanting to be in a beauty pageant, I was would have said, gross! I did not own a Barbie doll, and I liked rolling around in the dirt and climbing trees.”

Alison’s desire to compete in a beauty contest developed while she was in middle school.

“When I was in middle school, I would plan to watch TV the night the Miss USA pageant was on,” she said. “I would try to guess who would be the top 10 finalists. I never thought I’d be competing in it.”

Alison’s interest in the pageant encouraged her to compete and win the Miss Teen Massachusetts USA crown in 2005, the year she graduated from Weymouth High School.

“I had a lot of fun while competing in that program,” she said.

Since then Alison has been busy completing her studies as a communications major at New York University

“I’m finishing my courses a semester early,” she said. “That is exciting.”

Alison plans to spend the next several months preparing for the upcoming Miss USA pageant in Las Vegas on April 19, 2009.

“The contest will be held two days before my 22 birthday,” she said. “I have a lot of things to do in preparation.”

Some of the tasks Alison must complete include selecting a wardrobe and keeping herself physically fit.

“I’ll have to select an evening gown and follow a workout regimen,” she said. “I have to work with an interview coach as well. There are a lot of things you have to do prepare for the contest.”

Alison had to complete a preliminary competition and swimsuit competition to qualify as a finalist for Miss Massachusetts USA.

“There was a preliminary competition that involved wearing an evening gown,” she said. “The next day there was a swimsuit competition.”

The judges at both venues collectively reduced the amount of contestants to five finalists that included Alison, all of whom completed onstage interviews.

“It was a good showcase to tell people who you are, and what you stand for,” Alison said. “I met a lot of really great girls from around the state that have all accomplished so much and are quite educated. The event is a beauty pageant, but it is not all about beauty. The pageant showcases confident women who are competing for the same crown.”

Alison said she sought the Miss Massachusetts USA title to help support charities throughout the state.

“I’m excited,” she said. “Getting the title is a good opportunity to serve Massachusetts by working with a lot of charities.”

Helping people in need seems to be natural for Alison

She realized the importance of putting the needs of others first from her mother Michele, a widow, and nursing home administrator at Vernon Hall in Cambridge.

“She used to have us come to the nursing home to visit the residents who did not get a lot of visitors,” Alison said. “Her example of helping people in need has been reinforced to us.”

Michele’s example is especially compelling for Alison because her father died when she was 13.

“My mother raised my brother Don and I on her own,” she said. “Don is an emergency room nurse at a hospital in New York City and he has done quite well for himself. I consider Don one of my role models.”

Alison said people in need have hopes and goals that are common to all humanity and this reality was especially evident when she visited Ghana, a West Africa nation, with some of her New York University classmates last year.

“We were involved in community service and research while over there,” Alison said. “I got to talk with a lot of people. The project I did was to learn how the people in Ghana define themselves in the context of the world, and the African continent. It was a very big eye-opening trip.”

She visited a Ghanaian orphanage and realized the youngsters share the same dreams of succeeding like young people in the U.S. have.

“The kids in the orphanage have huge dreams and goals,” Alison said. “I realized that I had the tools to reach them. They really inspired me.”

Alison said she hopes to inspire people to succeed and help those in need by winning the Miss USA crown in April.

“I’m glad I can be a positive role model for girls in Weymouth, and the South Shore, and in Massachusetts,” she said.

TOP 5 MISS PA:
4 of the Top 5 from PA were great choices, but the judges made a big mistake by choosing Amanda Jupena (4th runner-up). She couldn't even articulate an answer during her interview and looked like a deer in headlights standing next to the other ladies who were composed and confident. This went far beyond nerves, but rather a lack of poise, maturity and experience. I think Airin McClain and Melissa Hindman (Top 15) would have been better contenders for Top 5. They both looked gorgeous in their gowns, had tone-athletic bodies with great credentials. My daughter made the Top 5 and highly praised these ladies as her toughest competition. I demand a RECOUNT!

Kate Barnes-Nice presence- should grow her hair out. Loved her dress.

Michaela Gagne-Patterned dress-not a fan

1st runner-up-Monique Jones-Gorgeous dress, face is pretty, she sounded sick her voice was raspy. Seemed a bit to old.

2nd runner up-Tara Fitzgerald-Beautiful white dress, to tan, seemed artificial.

3rd runner up-Lacy Wilson-good stage presence, poor interview-hands were flying around to much

4th runner up-Sola O.-Green dress not my favorite, good presence.

I've put up the Maryland montages today... click the link or the pics to see each divisions top five in swimsuit & gown... I've also noted on each page some trivia points about the historical context of each top five :D

MISS >> http://www.pageantupdate.net/missusa2009/topfives/maryland.htm

TEEN >> http://www.pageantupdate.net/missteenusa2009/topfives/maryland.htm

If I've said it once, I've said it a million times - it is a complete mystery to me how Courtney Hejl was not included in this top five. And I'm flummoxed by the final result... although in all honesty I can't see any of the Miss top five being truly competetive at Miss USA... the only person (in my mind only, of course) who fit that bill was left in the top 15... Courtney.

Here's the comparison pic of her I did for the Former Teens page

That, of course, is merely my opinion ;) What do you think? I'd be particularly interested to hear what people who were actually at the pageant thought...

Can a girl win Miss State USA with short, chin length hair? Examples: Miss America, Kirstin Haglund's new style (when it's straight), the oh-so over-done Posh Spice bob, Katie Holmes etc...THAT SHORT.

I know this is off topic, but I know many of you in the pageant world have a soft spot for animals. Here's a quick way to help feed shelter animals for FREE!

If you visit http://www.freekibble.com a kibble donation is made to local animal shelters. (just answer a fun animal question and that's it!)

Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!
