US OUTLAW NATIONALS
Race Report
-- pit pundit, 04/21/08 8:49pm
The first annual US Outlaw National is in the books and the TPSA had an outstanding event. Ennis definitely had that "National" feel to it with the three day format and plenty of the Outlaw race teams arriving and testing on Friday. A couple of the TPSA teams made hits Friday nite, but most opted to wait for the Saturday qualifying sessions.
After the 3rd session Saturday Larry Pearce, with his new NRC/Tricky Ricky bullet nestled 'tween the framerails stood atop the heap. His 4.651 @ 150.97 was followed by Joe Pigford (Reher-Morrison) @ 4.685 @ 149.78. Points leader and current record holder, Richard Otwell, also with NRC/Ricky motivation was 3rd @ 4.732 148.35. Eddie Conrad led the rest of the group with a 4.818 142.75, followed by the best of the "Hill Country Boyz", Clint Crownover @ 4.839 143.80. David Hubbard was slightly quicker than Aaron H with a 4.845 145.08, to Aaron's 4.848 143.36. The "Hill County Boyz" use Houston Engine & Balancing power. Rick Hanson anchored the field with a 4.910 140.20 hit with his Westside performance/Knarak combo.
1st round had teammates Crownover, and Abilene's winner, Aaron Hubbard face off. Not only was this to advance to the semi's, it was also for braggin' rights in the "Boyz" camp. Clint was out first (a victory in itself!) and never looked back as the 'Bird turned on the win lite with a 4.845 to AH's 4.884. The next pair featured DH against the Hanson family's black 'Vette. Rick and Chad are building a new piece but until it's ready they're running last years engine. Rick's 4.94 fell just a little short to advance D Hubbard into the semi's. Rick & Chad said they're gonna freshen up ol' reliable during the break. Next up would be Pigford vs Eddie the "Dude" Conrad. Eddie's another one who is building a fresh piece, but in the meantime is making the most of his 538" combo. Pigford got away first and his 4.720 made Conrad's 4.817 a spectator for the rest of this one. Stable mates, Richard Otwell and Larry Pearce would close out the opening round. These guys use the same engine builder, share crew members, travel together, and lord knows what else, but there would be no quarter asked nor given on the starting line. #1 Qualifier Pearce, showed it was no fluke when his 4.669 (only .60 of the round) put his buddy's 4.749 in the box. Otwell had been experiencing some sort of tranny/converter issues and had worked late into the nite trying to figure it out but 'twas not to be this time.
The Semi's had the two slower cars, Crownover & DH draw the quicker Pigford and Pearce respectfully, and this time you could have raced them on paper. Even though both left first on their opponent, Pigford's 4.700, and Pearce's 4.694 blew by the "Boyz" to set up a classic #1 vs #2 showdown in the final.
It doesn't get any bigger or better than being in the money round at the fabled Texas Motorplex. Just like Anderson, Connelly, & WJ on ESPN's coverage of NHRA racing, "Pig" & Pearce were towed under the tower and prepared to meet in the waterbox. Each had been in this position before...Pearce has won races, Pigford's won his share, and is the defending TPSA champion. After the long 200' burnouts were completed, each team made their final adjustments and the cars pre-staged. Pigford staged first, then brought the r's up a bit. Pearce staged, the lite flashed green and this little "Piggy" went weee, weee, weee all the way to the winner's circle with a HOLESHOT 4.716 to 4.691 victory that wasn't as close as it sounds. Back in the pits, Pearce was understandably beatin' himself up, but his performance over the weekend was outstanding. In a great show of sportsmanship (and humor) Pearce left Joe a hand written message taped to the side of his trailer and left before team Pigford was through with all of the winner circle activities. Congratulations to all of the teams for a great show and for your support of the TPSA.
Finally, our thanks to Shan and all of the promoters, staff (special mention to the scale guys), sponsors, and fans of the US OUTLAWS. You had many different racing organizations to choose from, and we're honored you elected to bring 8 TPSA cars to be a part of this event. We hope you enjoyed the show.....

WINNER..........Aaron Hubbard

Runner up.........Richard Otwell

Semi's.........Eddie Conrad
-- ., 04/15/08 4:36pm
When we rolled into the Abilene Dragstrip early Friday nite the first person we met was the owner Dean Kennedy. With that kind of hands on involvement it was no surprise just how clean and neat the facility was and how well the track had been prepped just for a Friday nite. Joe Pigford gave an indication of just how good the 1719* elevation track was working when he ripped off a 4.68. New member Lance Abbott was there with the family's new S-10 truck that had just been completed. In fact, they were installing the hood dzus's before the first shake down pass. Aaron Hubbard was there in ol' Blue, with a hand me down bullet. The track stayed consistant late into the nite even with the cooler temps and it was apparent we'd have great conditions come race day.
Race day featured high 60* temps with 20% humidity...quite a change for most of the Houston area racers. After qualifying was complete, Pigford stood atop the leader board with a 4.73 and Richard Otwell was 2nd @ 4.75. Eight cars of the ten car field were in the 4 second zone and the remaining two ran 5.0's.
1st round had Eddie Conrad's 4.83 advance over Abbott's S-10. Lance had developed a tranny problem during tt's and had staged hoping for a break. Clint Crownover's 4.91 moved into round two over Rick Hanson's 4.97. Larry Pearce used a 4.79 hit to send Randy Elliott's 5.07 packing. Rumor has it this was the last race for Elliott's current bullet. He has a birthday coming up this weekend and a surprise may be waiting. Watch for him to step up @ Evadale on May 17th. Sometimes the draw has some quirks and sure enough, #1 Pigford drew #2 Otwell. Pigford had experienced some braking issues during the first qualifying hit and flat spotted a front tire. Every effort was made to find a replacement tire but to no avail. Pigford voluntarily forfeited the pass of the weekend (1.04 @ 60', 3.02 @ 330') when he stepped off and let Otwell by. Pigford said that due to the notoriety the tire issue had received and the chance, however small, of the tire failing deemed it the most prudent thing to do. In a bizarre twist, Otwell's ride didn't shift into high gear and his 4.88 nearly didn't take advantage of the situation. The Hubbard's would close out first round action and Aaron showed his cards with a 4.87 (.006 rt) to 4.86 holeshot win over the ol' man.
2nd round saw Conrad advance again with a 4.87 when Crownover experienced a problem at the line which resulted in him leaving before the tree was activated. Larry Pearce's redlite would advance Aaron into the semi's, and Otwell ran 4.72 on his bye.
Semi final action had Otwell advance uncontested when Conrad left the red hanging, and A. Hubbard (.008 rt) had the bye into the money round.
The final once again proves why we don't race timeslips. I doubt that you could have gotten anyone to take the odds on Hubbard winning, but when the tree flashed green, Aaron's advantage was obvious (.001 rt) and it was clear Otwell would need a record pass at altitude to catch him. It was over when Otwell's car didn't shift and hit the rev limiter sending the younger Hubbard to the Winner's Circle. Otwell did leave this event with the points lead and his 2nd trip to the final in the past two races.
Once again thanks to the Kennedy family, the staff, and fans of the Abilene Dragstrip. If you live nearby and haven't checked it out you need to make the trip. It is a first rate facility throughout.
Next up is this weekend at the US Outlaw Nationals held at the Texas Motorplex. Hope to see ya'll there.

Night of Fire Results
from The Abilene Dodge Dragstrip

Aaron Hubbard claimed his 3rd career TPSA victory via a stunning holeshot...

The Team "O" powerhouse had a productive outing claiming the Bounty on the "Pigman",
making it to the final, and leaving Abilene as the new points leader.
**No pic available yet, Semi's...Eddie Conrad -- pass the Vicks Vapor rub!, 04/13/08 11:37pm
***Pictures and text copied with permission from the Abilene Dragstrip Homepage***
The Texas Pro Stock Association put on a great show this evening. Take a look at the By Round data on the Winner's Circle page and we might be glad they didn't put a dial on these things and run the brackets. Aaron Hubbard of Fort Worth came out on top, killing the tree in the final round with a .0019 reaction time and clocking 4.86 at 141.55 MPH. That reaction time is against a .400 Pro Tree, and the run was made about 1:30AM on Sunday morning! Aaron went 4.88, 4.88, 4.87 on his way to the final round. Runner Up Richard Otwell of Conroe held up his end, running 4.88, 4.72, 4.71 on the way to the final. After all that, he got lit up in the final and ran an off pace 4.96 at 122 MPH.(end of copy & paste)
What an exciting event and wonderful facility. The Kennedy's, have owned the property for a very short time and when you drive up to the front gate it's very obvious they take pride in, and are constantly spending the effort to make this the place to race in West Texas. Dean Kennedy's wife, Alva, said they have been spending 6 days a week at the track preparing for this grand opening event. That's a good little jog from their home in Brownwood! Both of the "senior" Kennedy's were quick to acknowledge the help and dedication of the "junior" Kennedy's, Sean & Kelly, and all of the staff, and sponsors of the track. It is a family affair. Check out their homepage @ www.abilenedragstrip.com for more pics and info.
Thank you from all of us @ the TPSA to the Kennedy family, the entire staff & sponsors, and those West Texas fans that braved the cooler temps...it was great for racing, but a little cool for spectatin'. Our east Texas members that aren't that familiar with west Texas people came away impressed with the courtesy, enthusiasm, and hardiness of ya'll.
Much more race stuff tomorrow or whenever the Nyquil wears off! Thanks to all of the teams that made our first trek out west a sucess, and special mention to new member Lance Abbott (and Mom & Dad) with the shiny new S-10 truck, by the way..ya'll forgot to pick up your cash after the race. By the way part II, we forgot to give Richard Otwell the Lidiak Motorsports "Bounty" cash but it's in safe hands...LOL.
On a personal note, great to see an ol' friend after 30 years (Ken Hostetter, wife Michelle, and a nearly grown up daughter I'd never met), and to Aaron Cole and his bride Linda, for driving up from Galveston to help "Trapper" Aaron get to the final....

Ok little buckaroos, here's the latest on Abilene. They do run a tnt Friday nite from 6-11pm and I plan to be there for it. If you're coming in later than midnite Friday, give me a call on the cell. Saturday, gates open officially @ 11 am but TPSA will be allowed early entry. They will have a parking area saved for us, but you should be there by 1 pm on Saturday to make it EZ for everyone. The Kennedy's and staff are expecting a large turnout for this event and our time trial and elimination schedule will be determined in part by the amount of racers that come out. For maps, info, etc, click on the Abilene flyer above for the track's homepage.
If you haven't checked the weather, it's gonna be awesome; clear & sunny, highs in the upper 60's, lows in the 40's, and ZERO chance of the r word...just a great weekend for racing. So saddle up ol' Buttercup and follow the sunset to beautiful Abilene Dragstrip. See ya in the lanes. -- DH, 04/10/08 6:42pm

The so called Big Bad Wolf showed to be leagal on valve angle being at 23 degrees exactly. Some people stating that the intake manifold appeared to be illeagle.Fact! We have always allowed modifications to the intake,s. heads are angle milled, shifted, ported and sometimes have plate,s attached to the face of the intake .It has always been a prob. to get the intakes to fit properly. All we ask that that it looks presentable. No welding was apparent even under the jesel, only at the end where the water cross over is at.

- Report from Otwell's All-In Motorsports shop... -- Team "O", 04/ 8/08 11:38pm
Well, Eddie Conrad (TPSA's Engine Tech Inspector) was summoned to the shop this evening to settle the BS going on. He checked the valve angle, the bore center and had to have a look at the intake that is being called illegal by some. He named names of those who have questioned the legality and even stated who has been making some posts on various message boards claiming we are cheating, however we elect to hold that in confidence. Now first off all, the CURRENT TPSA rules state that a CAST intake must be used. There is no rule against modifying that intake anyway you want so long as no sheetmetal is added (sheetmetal tacks on 50# to a combinations minimum weight) So, the Profiler Intake and its modifications are completely within the rules. The valve angle is within the allowable minimum allowed and it is a 4.840 bore spacing. For clarification we are talking about the new motor built according to the current rules. As for the heads, they are BMF conv BBC heads by CFE that anyone can buy (see rules again). There is absolutely NO WELDING on the ports. After you buy them send 'em over to Slick Rick at NRC for some porting magic. For informational purposes, the heads on the old motor were built prior to the rule changes regarding where and when heads can be welded on, thus they are grandfathered in. A fact that Eddie will admit to is his heads are welded and built to the old rules also. For you people calling and posting that it's a cheater motor, please READ the rules first. So, in closing quit whining and go work on your stuff or call NRC, Reher-Morrison or whoever you want and tell them you need a bad ass conv headed 565 BBC with a single carb on top of a cast intake, make your ride legal weight with a glide and get in the other lane!

***North Star Dragway***
-- pit pundit, 03/31/08 10:50pm
The early birds rolled into Denton's Northstar Dragway late Friday nite for the TPSA event. The weather wasn't clear or cool but the track looked killer and looks weren't deceiving. The last car with slicks hit the lanes about midnite and shucked the rear end in a testimony about how the track was hooking. We all went to bed dreaming how good it would be in the am.
Saturday am and it's warm, overcast and misting. The track had seen a small shower and some puddles were visible. We decided to walk the track and even with the damp surface, it would try to pull your shoes off out to the 330'!. It was obvious we would have some outstanding track to work with.
Larry Croft and his track team prepped the track and the first TT was around 6:30 pm. The first pair down the track was Hubbard in Crownover's Cavalier and Crownover in Hubbard's familiar 'Bird...what???..it's a long story. Anyway DH's .410 4.85 was just barely better than Clint's .417 4.86 hit and the rest of qualifying was just as exciting. When the smoke cleared, Richard Otwell (Team O aka Big Bad Wolf) stood atop the heap with a new TPSA record 4.647 @ 150.65 with his new NRC bullet. Pigford, the points leader, was right there with a 4.66 from his newest Reher-Morrison piece.
1st round had Larry Pearce draw Rick Hanson. Rumor has it Pearce has "little Wolf", Otwell's old NRC motor between the rails but he had trouble in TT's with the car not shifting and didn't make a clean pass. He had no trouble on this pass as his 4.67 moved him into the 2nd round and also made him the 3rd member of the TPSA 4.60 club. The Hanson's black 'Vette was a little off the pace it displayed at Evadale but no reports on what the issues were. 2nd pair saw Crownover advance over Randy Elliott's 'Vette, and Eddie Conrad advanced when Joe Pigford turned on the red lite by .005 and went to the box! Conrad collected the Bounty that was posted on the points leader and Pearce's crew removed the "Here Piggy, Piggy" shoe polish lettering from the rear window of their Cavalier. #1 qualifier, Otwell, drew the runner-up at the last event, Merv Davis driving the Winscott family's, GTO. Davis experienced some sort of engine gremlin and Otwell advanced with a clean 4.65. David Hubbard drew the odd lot bye into round 2.
Round 2 and the giant killer, Conrad, would get another tough opponent in Otwell. Conrad was out first but the big bad Wolf huffed, & puffed and came storming by to send the "Dude" to the trailer. Pearce drew DH in a match, that on paper, wasn't close. The newest member of Team O (Pearce), had a big performance advantage but we don't race 'em on paper. When Larry left the big red hangin' on the tree (-.010) DH got a free pass into the semi's. Crownover drew the odd lot bye.
Semi's and the Hill Country Boyz pits were jumping. Seems DH heard a "clunk" when he shut down after the previous run. The Cavalier was on the jacks and A. Hubbard, Donald the "Boxman" Hughes, Crownover, A. Cole (a friend from Galveston that had driven up for the race) were looking for the cause. They repaired a loose convertor bolt and everything was good. Since Crownover and Hubbard had both drawn a bye previously, Otwell would get the single and the team mates would have to run each other. Friendship's end at the stage beam and DH would move into the final after a close race with his buddy and car owner who had helped him get ready for the round! Maybe not a good idea to put the car owner on the trailer.....LOL. The dew and heavy moisture were coming fast as Otwell completed his bye run. A quick conference between the finalists, Hubbard & Otwell, and track management resulted in postponing the final until May 31st when the TPSA will return to North Star. Congrats and thanks to all of the TPSA teams, families, and crew that made the first trip "up north" a success, and a bunch of fun. And don't forget Wes Strom from www.nitroart.com for keeping the pits lively and taking those cool shots.
Thanks again to Rich Witkovski, Larry Croft, the entire staff of North Star, and those North Texas fans. Make your plans to be back on May 31st for more TPSA action.

North Star Dragway debut...... -- DH, 03/30/08 7:27pm
The short story is if you're a TPSA racer and you didn't make this event, you missed it! And, if you're a spectator in the greater DFW area that let a cool, overcast, moist day keep you from the track; well, you missed out too.
Rich Witkovski (owner), incomparable track manager Mr. Larry Croft, Nick, the staff, and the fans at NorthStar made our first trip not only successful but a very enjoyable to boot. We're most appreciative of Rich & Larry putting our cars & safety first in making their decision to postpone the final round until our next trip to Denton on May 31st. Larry told us the dew was coming in fast and the track and his personnel were ready, but we just couldn't get the cars cooled off and turn 'em around before the dew and heavy moisture set in. Thanks guys for a super event and the hospitality you provided and we look forward to seeing you again in May.
A quick shout out to Wes Strom for the pics and for keeping us entertained over at the TPSA headquarters! Go to his link http://www.nitroart.com and check out the fine pics of the TPSA cars. Be sure to BUY a couple of your favorites... it's the best way to thank Wes for spending his time and $$ covering one of our events and you'll get a great pic to show off.
The pit pundit and race reporter are recovering from the trek up North so watch for the race report, gossip, and other tidbits to be posted tomorrow. For now, you can check out the race stats over on the TPSA homepage under the "Results" button.
That's it for now, be sure to watch for the full race report tomorrow.

-- DH, 03/26/08 12:30am
OK boys and girls, it's just a little over 5 days 'till our inaugural trip to North Star Dragway in Denton. If you haven't checked out their homepage yet, click the link above. There's a real time "countdown" letting everyone know just exactly when the TPSA is gonna roll into town. The weather forecast is looking good for a great day of racing on the 29th.
The "Pigman" says he ain't goin' out easy, but a couple of bounty hunters have told me they're gonna ambush him at Denton. Also, one long time member (aka "Spike") of his gang is ridin' with another bunch of hombres intent on claiming the bounty themselves. When the smoke clears, who'll be left standin'?
Northstar does have a Friday nite TNT and TPSA members are welcome to stay at the track. Gates open @ 7pm on Friday, and 6pm on Saturday.
Beginning with this Saturday our schedule begins to get pretty hectic. While you're finalizing that tune up and chassis setting, now would be the perfect time to double check all of of your safety equipment for proper operation and expiration dates to make sure you're set for the season.
So come on out to Denton for some pro tree, heads-up, no breakout, no buy back action. Now that's real Drag Racing!

I forgot to acknowledge the efforts of Gene & Tommy Platt @ Evadale. These guys donate their time, travel expenses, and motel room just to help the TPSA and it's members. In adddition to running the scales, if anyone needs help, they'll jump in and get 'er done....as Mr. Lidiak noted in his post down the page. Dash at "The Dale" -- PIGMAN, 03/18/08 2:52pm
Well who'd a thought it ??? Me and Merv in the final. That was great, cause I know how much Merv likes to drive and to have that chance fall in his lap, so to speak, was just really cool. Runnin' Richard 1st rd. wasn't too cool but we got lucky this time(smart enough to know it won't always turn out that way). Then I catch DH 2nd rd. and he proceeds to give me a lesson in starting line proficiency(.4029 vs. .4623)! Thanks to David Reher horsepower I managed to squeak it out. 3rd rd.'s a bye(thanks,I needed that) and then on to the final with MERV. The "Mamba"prevailed but I've got to tell ya', Gary Winscott and his boy deserve big credit for their improvments to that car and Merv did a great job driving. Congrats guys!!! Hope to see everyone in Denton and to borrow a phrase from DW "Lets go racin' boys, boogity, boogity, boogity!!!!"

- Thanks to the "TPSA" Group -- Lidiak, 03/18/08 11:37am
Lidiak Motorsports Racing Team wants to thank the TPSA for allowing us to feel a part of the "family". We enjoy traveling and racing our current bracket Nova when we can at the events that the TPSA attends, so we can watch the "professionals" at work while we bang away at the bracket racers. We went to Evadale for the first time with our car and ran into an issue at Tech that was not going to allow us to run the bracket race. I mentioned our situation to one guy, Clint, and before I knew it, we had several TPSA teams wanting to know how they could help us. Are you guys kidding? We received parts from 3 different teams while they were trying to get the Pro Cars ready, and then Tommy Platt showed up at our pit to help the fat mechanic (me) rewire part of our car. He had us up and running; we made 3 time trials and went 2 rounds during the race. Broke out in the 3rd round by .003.
Guys, you are what racing is about. Lidiak Motorsports is dedicated to making sure the TPSA continues to be successful.
We appreciate everyone's help and the "family" feeling we receive from every person on every team. Thanks again and see ya at the races.
J. Gary Lidiak

Records Fall @ Evadale!
Official Race Report -- pit pundit, 03/17/08 9:12pm
It's been a long off season and the winter was filled with rumors, gossip, and lots of bench racing. But Saturday was the 2008 TPSA Season Opener, and time to quit talkin' and start racin'. The Bruce Family, Fred, and the staff @ Evadale had the facility ready for us with great track prep and the new stands are nearly completed...those things are awesome and will be the place to watch the races from. As a driver, it was neat to drive through the "tunnel" to the water box.
We were missing some familiar faces at this event. Eddie the "Dude" Conrad was on injured reserve (should be back for Denton), Donald the "Boxman" Hughes is waiting on parts, RJ Dorsett is waiting on his bullet, James Talley is just about ready, ditto for the Jeff Storrs Camaro, Donny Williams got his ready Sunday, and Aaron Hubbard's waiting for a bullet. Seems Dad took ol' Blue's and put in another ride. More on that later. If we can get all of these guys together at one time, along with a couple of the new guys, it will be a record turnout.
Back to the race. You want new drivers?..we got 'em. You want new cars?..check. You want record setting performance?..got that too..Saturday greeted us with clear skies, a little wind, and more temp with lower barometer than we like to see this early in the year, but that's mother nature. The weather conditions for the first hit @ about 4 pm was 84* with 33% humidity. When the smoke cleared from qualifying, it was Pigford #1 @ 4.701, with Otwell #2 @ 4.734. David Hubbard was #3 in the Crownover's Cavalier in it's maiden voyage (with ol' Blue's bullet) with a 4.88. The rest of the field was jammed in the 80's to low 90's.
First round action started with the familiar random drawing. The first two cars down the track were Larry Pierce in the "Longhorn" Cavalier and Randy Elliott in his 'Vette. Pierce would advance with a 4.92 lap. 2nd pair was Clint Crownover driving DH's 'Bird facing the Woods/Cowger team Camaro. The "Hill Country Boyz" put a car into the 2nd round with a .4014 initiated, 4.91 pass by Crownover who was making his first appearance driving since selling the S-10 last summer. Clint's rt puts him in the early lead for the Lidiak Motorsports "Treeman Challenge". Woods/Cowger had been battling some issues all day and would continue to work on the car and make a test hit later in the nite. Woods & Cowger were the recipients of the "Gas Card" drawing sponsored by Otwell's All In Motorsports and Joe Pigford. 3rd pair was a crowd pleaser...although the principals involved probably would have chosen a different opponent if they could have. Pigford and Otwell, #1 & #2, both in the points chase last year and in qualifying today faced off. Pigford left first and turned on the win lite with a 4.68 to 4.72 effort from Otwell. Team O purchased Worley's Grand Am and brought it to this event after selling the Cavalier they used last year. Richard is waiting to take delivery of his new Don Ness GXP in the next few weeks. They only had a week to transplant the power train and this was the first time this combo had been to the track. Pigford was in ol' reliable, the "Green Mamba", while he awaits delivery of his new Stroupe GXP. 4th pair had D Hubbard, driving Clint & Laurie Crownover's clean new Cavalier, against the Hanson family's black 'Vette. The numbers show it would have been a great race...4.88 for DH, 4.89 for Rick, but the red lite was glowing back in Hanson's lane and Hubbard automatically advanced.
The bye run is a story that could cover a page by itself. It began with numerous set backs and trouble back at the shop for the Winscott family's GTO before they ever made it to the track. Jason credited his Dad, Gary, for providing the encouragement to stick it out and get the car ready and loaded. Now it gets interesting. They were stuck in traffic on I-10 for about 2 hours (Otwell & Pigford were also) and when they arrived at the track, their driver wasn't there! Way too long a story to tell it all but in the end, Merv Davis (member of the Pigford crew!) borrowed a helmet and driving gear, and jumped in with both feet! Merv has made several test hits for Pigford but this would be his first TPSA experience. He showed he was ready with a 4.83 @ 145 on the bye run.
2nd round and DH drew a chance to bring in the "Outlaw" Pigford and collect the Lidiak Motorsports "Bounty". Hubbard, another of the "Hill Country Boyz", nearly matched his team mate's earlier rt with a .402 rt of his own, but couldn't head the Champ's second 4.68. The two newest drivers, Davis & Crownover went at it with Merv coming out on top with a 4.79 in the Winscott's ride. Pierce drew the bye and posted a 4.88 to move into the semi's.
Semi's had Davis and Pierce comin' under the new stands through the tunnel and headed for the waterbox. Pierce left first with a .412 but Davis drove around him for a 4.78 to 4.87 victory. Pigford eased down with a new TPSA record 4.6547 @ 150.35! If anyone reading this has ever wondered about how seriously Fred, his crew, or the Bruce family take track prep @ Evadale, this should answer the question for you. Great job by Fred and the crew.
The final is set. It's odd, but in one aspect it's an all team Pigford affair, except his teammate is driving for another team. The tree is green, the rt's are within .01 but the green machine of Pigford will not be denied on this day and he goes to the winner's circle in 4.69 seconds. Merv and the Winscott's finish out an incredible outing with a 4.79. Congratulations to both camps and an outstanding job by the Winscott's to make it to their first final. And a tip of the cap to the "rookie" Merv Davis for being in the final at his first TPSA event!
Thanks again to the Bruce family, Fred & the entire staff @ Evadale, and those great East Texas race fans. We'll see you again @ Evadale on May 17th.
Next up on the schedule is our inagural visit to Denton and Northstar Dragway on March 29th. Hope to see ya there!

***Evadale Season Opener***

We had a great time @ Evadale and congratulations to Team Pig on their win, and especially to the Winscott Family for their first final in TPSA action under some very difficult circumstances. Props to hired gun Merv "Spike" Davis for making it to the final in his first TPSA event. As always, the Bruce family, Fred, Daryl, Nikki, Bryan, Donna (hope the spelling's close..LOL) and the entire staff @ Evadale just treated us like royalty and the fans were amazing! Thanks to you all!
Race report, the latest gossip, and much more will be posted soon. It's a looong drive to "the little track in the woods" for an ol' man in the hill country....but it's well worth it every time.

***Special programs for '08***

--
DH
, 03/ 8/08 9:30pm
With the season opener at Evadale less than a week away, the fine folks @ Lidiak Motorsports have announced a new program for the '08 Season. Dubbed the "Bounty Hunter Challenge", this program will reward the racer that can take down the current points leader at each event with $100 cash. If the "Bounty" is not claimed it will roll over and increase by $100 per event until someone can bring the "outlaw" in. Just turn on the win lite during eliminations against the current "outlaw" and collect the "Bounty". A minimum of $100 will be up for grabs at each event for the racer that parks the "outlaw". At Evadale, the defending TPSA Champ, Joe Pigford will have the bounty on him. After the Evadale event, the current points leader and the Bounty will be posted. As announced earlier, the "Treeman Challenge" and "At the Stripe Challenge" both return for '08 courtesy of Lidiak Motorsports. The "Treeman" awards the best winning rt during the season with $250 and a plaque at the '08 Banquet. The "Stripe" awards the winner of the smallest margin of victory elimination round during the year with the same $250 and plaque. The "Bounty Hunter" will be contested at each event while the "Treeman" and "At the Stripe" Challenges will be season long contests. Thanks to Gary Lidiak and Lidiak Motorsports for their support!
Remember that Richard Otwell and Joe Pigford are sponsoring the new "Racer X" gas card program. The names of the first round runner-ups will be placed in a random drawing with the winner receiving $100 cash at each event.
Your TPSA entry automatically makes you eligible for these programs...there are no additional fees or forms required. These special programs, in addition to the Championship Points Chase, will bring added excitement and notoriety to the '08 Season.
Special thanks to all of our sponsors, host tracks, and fans for their support of the TPSA that allows us to have a place to play. See ya in the lanes...

&

Proudly present the first event of '08
at "the little track in the woods" Evadale, Tx

-- DH, 03/ 4/08 1:54am
The 2008 TPSA season opens in just two weeks at the newly remodeled Ben Bruce Memorial Raceway, aka Evadale. I talked to Fred tonite and he said the new grandstands are nearly complete, the track is ready, and the East Texas fans are primed for some heads up, TPSA action. Gate times and details will be posted here ASAP.
As announced at the Banquet, TCI Automotive and Lidiak Motorsports return as title sponsors for the '08 season. The popular "At the Stripe Challenge" and "Treeman Challenge" both return for '08 courtesy of Gary Lidiak. He has a surprise (or two) in the form of new programs that will be announced shortly. Thanks to Mr. Stanley Poff @ TCI, and Gary Lidiak @ Lidiak Motorsports for their continuing support of the TPSA.
Another new program for '08 will be the "Racer X gas card" presented by Richard Otwell and Joe Pigford. The names of all of the first round runner-ups will be placed in a hat for a random drawing and the winner will receive $$$ 100 $$$ cash to help with traveling expenses. The drawing will be held at each event in '08. Joe and Richard donated their points fund winnings to provide this program and their generosity is much appreciated!
We will be teching cars this year. Pigford has already been teched and if you'd like to be teched prior to the beginning of the season and in the comfort of your own shop give Conrad a call to set up an appointment. I had 'ol Blue teched while it was apart at the engine shop and it was painless. Please be at Evadale early, ready to remove a valve cover for a visual inspection. Valve angles and other items may be checked on a random basis as time permits. We also are looking for help with weighing the cars and other raceday duties. If you know someone that would like to be involved please let me know.
Schedule Update: Another new track has been added to the '08 Schedule. Edinburg Raceway will join the TPSA as a host track for an event to be held on July 19th. Details will follow soon and a comp (free) hotel room may be available for your team. Contact me for more details. Visit their website @ www.edinburgracetrack.com. I'll have a link up shortly on the homepage. .
The April 26 date is still on the Schedule and the location will be announced when the package is finalized. Yep, that makes 13 races and will complete our schedule. As announced at the Banquet, your best 10 finishes (maximum) will be counted toward the Championship. ***New for this year*** With the escalating traveling expenses, we do not plan to re-schedule any rain-outs that might occur during the year. The track shedules are full this year and re-scheduling would be difficult; not to mention the resulting double travel for the teams. If an event is rained out PRIOR to the teams arriving on site, a re-schedule may be considered. In a nutshell, make all of the events possible because it's likely to lose a couple during the year to weather.
This off season just flew by...it's hard to believe we'll be burning rubber in just a few days! Some of our old friends won't be back for various reasons: Ben & Donna Worley, if you're reading this from out on the "left" coast, stay in touch. Terry Ashabranner, Jim Naylor, and the "General" Lee Staiger will be missed as well....but the rest of the gang will be "back 4 more" heads up, all motor, no breakout racing with some new faces added to the mix. Had a great visit with an ol' racer tonite from the Tyler area that says he's coming and hoping to bring a friend along as well. Spyshots will be posted soon and this ride is unique! It will be a great addition to the group. Of course the off season was full of rumors of new motorhomes, more power, new engines, new cars, new players and other tidbits. Make your plans NOW to be at Evadale March 15th to watch it all unfold.
See ya in the lanes...

For all the guy's out there that are in TPSA that have been wondering about the legality of Joe Pigford's car, well I checked it sat. morning.R&M told him that his valve angle was approx.22.4 and our checker showed 22.7 and here was a supprise even to me ,there was no visible weld's even to mount the jesel. We are going to check the valve angle on a select few, and check for excessive welding on the roof's of the port's.Those that would like to get it done before our first race can call me and I will be glad to assist you.Eddie Conrad

- Here's a look at the new grandstands that the Bruce family and Fred are installing at Evadale. When finished, about 1,000 fans will be looking straight down the racetrack....just like the "big" tracks except you won't have to have an expensive "suite".

- Fast Cars -- food for thought !!, 02/13/08 12:42pm
To answer this question, let's look at some of the dynamics that take place when a big power, automatic, well hooked (and that is an important distinction) car lets go of the button and sends 1500+ hp rocketing down the driveline to a waiting ring and pinion. Unlike a clutch car that may give up some 60' time to pick up 330' utilizing wheel speed, the automatic car needs to (usually*) dead hook the tire to take advantage of the torque converter's multiplication. The lower the first gear is (numerically) the more critical the hook in that first 10' is- a 4.10 gear will multiply against the converter for a longer time than a 4.56 will. If the 4.56 loses grip, odds are it will spin hard enough to slow acceleration, then pull the motor down when the tire hooks- short time be damned. The 4.10 may recover earlier, before the engine senses the tire spin thru the converter. (*I say usually because as auto cars get faster, they do benefit from wheel speed like their clutch cousins. Most reading this won't have the power to spin the tire, keep it spinning long enough to overcome the need for that stall cushion -otherwise known as "getting up on the tire'- and transition to converter lock-up gracefully. The powerglide car has to stay "up on the tire' a looong time to avoid shake. A Powerlide's first gear is 1.80 or so and takes longer to accelerate the driveline than a stick car that has a 2.52 or so first and a .2 or so rear gear advantage. This takes a power to weight ratio unattainable by most to turn that tire that long. For the purpose of this article, we will deal with the majority that do not.)

- GOOD THING TOP FUEL DONT RUN C-44 @ $40 A GALLON -- we feel your pain, 02/ 8/08 10:43pm
In 2007 a 55 gallon drum of nitro cost $885. In early 2008 the price is still $885 – but for 40, not 55 gallons of fuel. Last year’s per-gallon price was approximately $16.38. Now it’s $22.12 – a whopping 31% increase.
You do the math, but it’s clear that by year’s end a racer’s budget could be shot to hell just because of the increased costs of nitro. As of this writing there are 17 Top Fuel cars in competition at the Winternationals. Increased fuel costs alone could cut that number significantly by mid-summer because it’s obvious that a number of teams out there are barely scraping by as it is. A 31% immediate increase in fuel expenditures could translate to a 40% or more increase by the end of the year, and that’s definitely not good news.

- "IF I MAY" -- Mike Morgan, 02/ 5/08 12:13am
I wish I could count the number of negitive posts like the one below that were put on this board when I was running the TPSA....WOW, I guess some things never change! Alot of you guys that are running today weren't around in the begining so let me tell yall how this deal started and what Mark & I had to deal with back then. "THE SAME THING, LOL!!!
When Mark & I started this thing in August of 2001 I recieved call after call, "It'll never work". Two months later (with the help of the internet & Lonestar Raceway) we had our first race at Sealy, 6 cars showed up and we were off and running, then the majority of the cars were running 5.30's & 5.40's. Word on the internet was it's a flop only 6 cars showed blah blah blah, to slow, etc! 1 month later we had our next race & 24 cars showed! Majority of the cars were still running 5.30's but now we had a few running low 20's & high teen's.....LET THE COMPLAINING BEGIN!
The next year/season started we booked about 10 or 12 races and we were off again; a couple of races went by and then the American Iron Horse sponsered 55' got there act "really" together and Spot showed up too, Spot a real (Bickle) X- Pro Stock Car, 5.0's and 4.90's "all day long"! "A couple of unlimited funds cars".....Spot ripped a 4.86 on 1 pass and John Harrison & Glen (the then owner of Sealy) looked at me and said "WOW, this thing is dead".....Our 5th race and it was all over...I was sick! But then I came back for the next race and everybody showed up again & then again & again.....We averaged 15 cars per race that year for the record.....And the same the next year.....
And FYI to the ney sayer down below who mouthed off about car count when we went to Texas Raceway/Kennedale, we had 15 cars there.....We had 15 to 18 cars when we went to Temple and that many when we raced @ Angleton too....
Cars came and went over the next few years for a variety of reasons, some lost interest, some had $$$ problems & some well who really knows. But every year about this time some Wanta Be Yea-Who gets on the board and makes a post almost exactly like the 1 below....."Everybodys quiting, to much money, cars are to fast, whine whine whine!!! The world is coming to a end!!!"....They get on here and spout off a bunch of BS like it's a fact and the only real fact is they don't have a clue.....
AND THEN YOU GO TO THE 1ST RACE AND EVERYBODYS THERE! Sure 2 or 3 of last years members are gone but now you have 2 or 3 new members...Gee I think if you watch the Pro's or the Outlaw PM's or 10.5" boys you see the same thing......
My sugestion to yall is don't respond to this guy. If I were you David I'd just delete him...He doesn't deserve a reponse. (AND AFTER THAT DELETE THIS POST TOO...lol)
Rick Hanson called me around the 1st of the year to invite me to the banquet (sorry I could't be there, I was out of town on biz) and we spent about 45 minutes commiserating about things & stuff and he told me he was trying to figure out what to do with the rules (because he was trying to make everyone happy) and I told him the biggest mistake I ever made was considering changeing the rules to try and even things out or should I say "slow down the fastest cars to meet the slower cars et's". It can't be done in a heads up format. It'll kill the show. And your not ever going to make everyone happy anyway! Sure you can make some weight adjustments here there for 2) 4's or Sheetmetal intakes, etc. Tweak the CI to # ratio a little.... But spec heads or any kinds of limitations will never work and you'll loose your mind trying to figure it out (I did).
Don't try and make everyone happy. Set the rules @ the begining of the year and leave'm alone till the next.
The times you guys are running is amazing. When I wrote the rules for this deal everybody told me there was no way a conv. headed motor would run anywhere close to these kinds of times.....WOW!!!
And to you "Ney-Sayer/World is Coming to a End Guys", if your going to make posts on here about stats of how many cars did what please atleast get your facts strait. I've got files of every race I was in charge of with car count and ET's, etc......
David, Rick & the rest of yall, from what I hear it looks like another successful year is in store for the TPSA!!!
David & Rick in my opinion you 2 guys have done a great job the past 3 years with this thing that Mark & I started on a whim and everyone said would never get off the ground much less last!
Of course this is just my opinion, I could be wrong.....
Good luck & be safe,
Mike Morgan/the Original Head Dic.
