Those who have attended the last two Banquets know the mexican food is a great choice but are you ready for a change? Our choices are Texas style Bar-B-Q with all the trimmings, or the Mexican feast.   I was wondering how much power increase do you get from running VP C-25 as to the C-14 fuel?I have seen some of you guys running the C-25 fuel and i am building a new motor to put in David Hubbard's old Trans Am and hope to come out a race with ya'll next season.

  • Billie, every combo is different but with the cars I've been around personally, it averages about .03 or .04 in et (1/8 mile). As with everything in racing no two combo's or teams will see the exact same results. On that note, some folks are having good luck and seeing hp gains with the Q-16 VP compared to the C-25. Might be something for you to look at during testing. I understand the Q-16 needs a lot of jet to keep from being lean; maybe one of our VP dealers can shed some light on this for you. My engines like C-44 the best, but I haven't tested the Q-16 yet. The Q-16 will save you some $$$ if your bullets are happy with it.

  • Rumors are fun, but here's a few facts for you to peruse. 2007 was a great year for the TPSA and '08 is shaping up to be better yet! For starters we have 11 races booked to date, new teams, new tracks, new sponsors, and our major sponsors are back as well. Unfortunately, attrition is a part of racing and some teams may not be back, or back for the full schedule. Recently, Pigford, Hanson, Elliott, RJ Dorsett, Winscott, Talley, the 4 "Hill Country Boyz", & Conrad told me they're committed to TPSA for '08. The last time I spoke to Otwell, Storrs, Pearce, and Worley they indicated they would be back as well. That's 15 teams and hopefully some of the other members can make at least some of the races and maybe we'll pick some up from the Abilene & DFW area. I believe going into '08 the "core" group is larger & stronger than it was at this time last year. Feel free to contact me about your concerns, questions, or suggestions. The teams of Ashabranner, Cowger/Wood, Naylor, Rigmaiden, Staiger, and Williams have been staunch supporters of the TPSA and hopefully they will all return for '08. They weren't mentioned simply because their plans for next year had not been confirmed at the time of the post.   Sig Thomas of Westside Performance died last Thursday night after a long fight with cancer. I don't know how many of you knew Sig or remember him from when I was racing in the TPSA, he was at almost every TPSA race helping me with my car. Sig was my friend, he was also my engine builder and we shared a shop where we kept our cars for many years. Sig was also my technical consultant when I wrote the engine rules for the TPSA.

  The banquet will be held at the same location as the past two years, but be sure to make a note of the new name...Crowne Plaza West. It is located just north of I-10W on Park Row (Hwy 6). The cost is $20 per person and a dinner buffet will be served. The Banquet hours are Saturday, January 12th, from 6-10pm and afterward the action moves to the hotel "watering hole" for some lively bench racing and tall tale tellin'.   Thought I'd give everyone an update. Went to the doc yesterday and he said everything was healing fine. My hands are pretty much healed--somewhat tender but OK. My face is healing slow--nose is doing OK--they said that in six weeks they will be able to tell how much scaring there will be. Upside I didn't need a mask for Halloween!! Should be back to work in 5-7 days.

• SAN ANTONIO RACEWAY...November 10th --

  The final standings of the top ten hung in the balance as the TPSA 2007 “No Excuses” tour rolled into San Antonio Raceway for the twelfth and last race of the year. Several of the teams arrived early Friday, parked, and visited friends, family, and just enjoyed the Alamo City area. Donald Hughes and Aaron Hubbard were among the early birds and were the first to test their setups and try to be one step ahead of the game come Saturday.
  
  The Midnite Madness series is aptly named and with the first TT slated for 9pm, there was plenty of time for some bench racing, smack talk, and catching some college football on the tube. Conrad, Elliott, Hanson, A Hubbard, Donald Hughes, Pearce, Pigford, Storrs, the Winscott team with Lump driving, and Worley would line ’em up for the last time this year to determine the order of the top ten.
  
  Warmer and more humid conditions than expected were on tap for the qualifying session, which had been reduced to one shot due to time constraints. The late nite dew would come in around 1am, and it was important to finish the race before then. Qualifying ended with a new face as #1, Larry Pearce ran 4.83 to pace the field, while perennial favorite, Pigford, had shook hard in low gear and had to lift. Was this a glimpse of a set-up error, or a chink in the armor of the “Green Mamba”? Time would tell. Meanwhile, Rick Hanson and Eddie Conrad would have aborted runs as well. A Hubbard was #2 with a 4.86, Brian Self (Lump), driving the Winscott family entry, posted a 4.87, and Jeff Storrs rounded out the 4 second slips with a 4.96. Donald Hughes discovered a noise on the way to the lanes for qualifying that was thought to be a rear end. Thanks to his brother-in-law, Scott Benham, Clint Crownover, and some other help, he got the third member changed in time for 1st round.
  
  First round action saw Jeff Storrs post a 4.94 to bring Ben Worley’s season to a close. Ben, Joe, and Donna have been chasing ignition gremlins for the better part of this year and continued to work on the car after 1st round. They made a TT later in the nite that showed some promise they were on the right track. In spite of the issues they have battled, the Worley team finished in the #9 spot for 2007. Second pair out had A Hubbard in ’ol Blue facing Team Winscott with Comp standout Brian (Lump) Self at the wheel. This was only the second race for the new GTO and qualifying revealed they were making more progress on the setup. At the green, Hubbard was out first and his 4.8673 (.4197rt) was just enough to take the stripe over Lump’s 4.8590 by a margin of .003! Lump’s more comfortable with a full tree and a clutch, but his .4310 rt proved he can get it done with a transbrake and pro tree. After the run, computer data showed the GTO with a hiccup in the top of high gear that might have cost them the round win. Congratulations to Gary, Jason, Lump, David Bowie and the team for some great runs in a short period of time. Look for Team Winscott to shake some things up next year. Third pair featured surprise #8 qualifier Joe Pigford against #6 Randy Elliott. Evidently “Pig” and the crew put some putty in the chink and parked the “Dandy” with a 4.71 blast. Randy’s only missed one TPSA race in the last two seasons, and narrowly missed the top ten in 2006. In 2007 however he made it in as #10. Pearce and the “Dude” Eddie Conrad, rolled into the water box next. Larry couldn’t match his #1 qualifying effort, but his 4.85 easily advanced when Eddie’s engine stumbled hard at the starting line. Conrad finishes in the #6 spot for the year, and rumors suggest a driver change for '08. The last pair had Donald the “Boxman” Hughes paired with Rick Hanson. Rick could catch Richard Otwell for 2nd in the standings with a win at this event...and his chances looked pretty good. Remember, Hughes didn’t make a qualifying hit and he didn’t get down the track in Friday nite testing either. Welp, that’s why we race ’em on the track and not in the pits! Hughes, with the 2nd quickest run of the first round, a 4.83, ends Hanson’s season. Rick and son Chad had a stellar year and will finish in the #3 position. No word yet on which Hanson will be in the chair for ’08.
  
  2nd round...traveling friends and fellow Hill Country Boyz would face off. Hughes and the younger Hubbard don’t have the history that the ’ol man has with the “Boxman” but a great race was anticipated by all. Two clutch rt’s, .4118 for Donald and a .4135 for Aaron and it was on....until both cars were hit with tire shake early and the resultant pass looked more like a funny car pedal fest with both drivers on and off the pedal. At the stripe, it’s the “Boxman” by .06! It sure wasn’t pretty, but it was entertaining. Aaron’s year finishes with him in the #7 position. Pigford and Storrs were up next and the fans crowded the fence to see if either or both would shake. Pigford evidently changed armor, the chink was long gone, and he showed the troops an outstanding 4.68 @ 148 for the low et and top speed of the meet. Jeff Storrs is a long time member of the TPSA that has been gone for a couple of years and it’s good to see him back. Hopefully, he can make the full schedule next year. Pearce rounds out the round with his best et of the nite, a 4.81, on his bye run.
  
  The semi’s, and it’s crunch time. Hughes’ season hasn’t gone according to plan, with a couple of missed races, and breakage, but he could still finish in the top ten if he advanced to the final. He would face Pearce, who was also looking to improve his final standings. They pre-staged, and rolled in to lite the stage bulb, but the “Boxman’s “ Beretta blinked the top bulb, and his season was done. He finishes just 4 points out of the top ten. This is another car that will be a player in ’08. The 2007 TPSA Champion, Mr. Joe Pigford, drew the bye and backed up the previous .68 with a .69.
  
  Time for the finals and it would feature the quickest two cars on the grounds. Funny how the random draw works out most of the time...LOL. Anyway, the rt’s were close, Pearce’s .463 to Pigford’s .458 and it looked to be tight ’till the 330' cone when Pearce lifted and the “Green Mamba” struck again. Larry Pearce’s late season charge with a semi and ru at the last two races moved him up to the #4 slot for the year. Great job by that team who has had their share of adversity in ‘07. This win marks #7 for the Pigford team and 4 in a row. Both tie the TPSA record set by David Hubbard in the 2006 season.

  • Well, who'd 've thought it ??? A year ago I'd just got my ticker replumbed and wasn't sure if I could still drive one of these things. Here I sit today the newly crowned "King of TPSA". There are so many people to thank I don't know where to begin so I'll play it safe and thank my wife, the beautiful and talented Charlotte Pigford first, followed closely by "Animal" Jack Cothren, Merv Davis, David Reher, Brad Morgan and all the crew at Reher/Morrison, Marv Ripes, Wally Stroupe, my brother Roy, and a host of others. We've had a great time this year and I'd like to believe it wasn't just because we were winning ( I've got way more experience losing and I enjoyed most of that racing too ). The people who make up TPSA are as great a group of individuals as I've ever been involved with and they are just a lot of fun to be around.   This Saturday is the Season Finale at San Antonio Raceway. Although Joe Pigford & "the Green Mamba" have the Championship sewn up, the other positions in the top ten will be decided Saturday. Hanson needs some help, but he can catch Otwell for 2nd, and Conrad, A Hubbard, DH, Pearce, Worley, Cowger, & Elliott are in a dogfight and every round matters. The odds are against the "Boxman", Storrs, the Winscott team, & Dorsett finishing in the top ten, but they are determined to end the year on a high note.
  
  The weather forecast is killer...highs in the low 80's and lows in the 60's. Todd and the crew @ SAR will have the track in great shape and watch for the records to fall. SAR does have a Friday nite TNT with gates opening @ 6pm and the lanes close @ 11pm. Saturday the gates open @ 8pm, but TPSA racers should plan to be there around 7pm.
  
  Donald Hughes has tried to contact the members to see if anyone needs VP delivered to the track. If you need some, contact Donald @ 512 423-9565 by Wednesday nite. Donald and I plan to be at the track Friday nite, so come join us early, make a couple of hits, hang out and enjoy the San Antonio area and TPSA's final race of '07. See ya in the lanes.

  Announcing another new venue for the TPSA series. Today, Abilene Dragstrip confirmed a date with the TPSA for the '08 Season. Mr. Dean Kennedy has entered into an agreement to buy Abilene Dragstrip and the purchase is expected to be completed in a few days. Abilene's a very nice facility with A/C & Heated restrooms, covered grandstands, and good lighting, but Mr. Kennedy and his crew have some upgrades and updates planned that will be the icing on the cake. The fact that their basic structure, rules, and procedures are still in use today speaks volumes about their vision and dedication to get it right. We owe these guys a huge THANKS and definitely want to give them the props they deserve.

    • The history goes back even further. Allot of evenings at Eddie "THE DUDE"Conrads shop planning. Bucky Allison,THE DUDE,Jim Franklin, The Benham bros.,Owens Clan, Joe Gonzales, and many others had a go at it years ago. Each group of guys has added a bit to the mix thru trial and error to make it what it is today. Remember when a 5.50 was haulin' ass. (NT) -- Jeff S., 11/ 5/07 7:36am
      • I don't know when the original Texas Pro Stock was formed, but I go back to 1986 when Richard Otwell gave me an opportunity to drive a Lenco/NOS car for a couple of races. That version of the TPSA didn't last much longer however, as it became way toooo expensive to maintain car count. Basically there were no CID rules, tranny rules, etc...it was more of an outlaw class. If I remember correctly, the top cars were running mid 4's back then. The last 21 years have produced many different versions and various offsprings of the original format have come and gone. Like the song says, "these are the good ol' days".   The TPSA 2008 Tour will feature a new stop as Mr. Larry Croft and Northstar Dragway will host two events next year. Northstar is located in Denton, Tx and is quickly building a reputation in north Texas as a quick, smooth, and fast track. The Northstar events will be held Saturday with gates opening @ 6pm and the final scheduled to run before midnite. Northstar also has a Friday nite TNT and the TPSA is welcome to come up early and spend the nite.
  
  Ben Bruce Memorial, aka Evadale, Houston Motorsports Park, and Pine Valley Raceway (Diboll) all return for 2008 and their continuing support of TPSA is greatly appreciated.
  
  The TPSA schedule will once again feature 12 events with points from each competitor's best 10 finishes used to determine the 2008 Championship Points Standings. The remaining dates will be posted when confirmed. Make your plans now to be part of the action!

  Dateline 10/19, Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, Texas.
  
  The first day of the Tiremax High Velocity Impact Race presented by Cypress Performance aka “Texas vs. the World” began early with many racers and vendors arriving Friday morning and the pit area began to fill up rapidly. Some of the TPSA regulars came out to park and to get a jump on Saturday. One of the teams was Gary Winscott and his new GTO. His regular driver wasn’t available and Gary wanted to get some full laps in...something they had not been able to do yet this season. Gary brought his chassis builder David Bowie and Tim from the shop. Testing went well, with the GTO dipping in the 4.80’s on the last pass of the night with Aaron Hubbard at the wheel. New member, RJ Dorsett was testing as well, but a converter was giving him some grief and he would put a new one in for Saturday’s eliminations.
  
  Saturday morning was sunny and pleasant, and the track looked to be in killer condition. After qualifying was complete, Joe Pigford led the way once again @ 4.68 149.75, with Richard Otwell right behind @ 4.70 149.93; a new TPSA mph record. Richard had posted a 150mph pass during the Friday nite test session, but it was not part of the official race. The top nine qualifiers were in the 4.80 range and quicker. Randy Elliott couldn’t make any qualifying hits when his ‘Vette lost oil pressure during the warm up procedure in the pits. “Someone” suggested it might be the oil pump pickup had broken, and sure enough, Randy pulled the pan, checked the bearings, made the necessary repairs, and went to the lanes for first round. That's dedication!
  
  First round had James Talley’s new driver, Charles Swindoll, Jr., advance when Eddie “the Dude” Conrad’s Camaro made a hard move and he had to lift. The Dude had qualified with a career best 4.83. Rick Cowger, in the Derryl Wood owned Camaro, damaged a converter but got the W when Randy Elliott was too quick with a .388 red lite. Steve Miller was behind the wheel of the Winscott GTO for eliminations and advanced with a great 4.87 over Ben Worley’s Grand Am. Ben may have exorcised some of the gremlins that have plagued him this season as he posted a 140.97 hit. In a re-match from last week’s race, Donald the “Boxman” Hughes got revenge and put David Hubbard’s ‘Bird back in the cage with a career best 4.82 and a .403 lite. RJ Dorsett got the new converter installed and would face the points leader, Joe Pigford. Pigford would go into round 2 via a solid 4.67 effort over the crowd favorite '57 Chevy. Richard Otwell advanced with a 4.69 over Jeff Storrs in a pair that saw both cars go red. Storrs’ red was the worst and Richard’s .386 red would move on. The best race of the first round was Larry Pearce vs. Aaron Hubbard. Pearce was out first with a .407 lite and ol’ Blue was right there with a .423. Both driver’s would run career best numbers with Pearce’s 4.798 getting the win over Aaron’s 4.818. Rick Hanson would complete first round action with a bye run.
  
  2nd round had “the Boxman” Hughes reset his personal best et to a 4.800, just missing the .70’s! His nite would come to an end however, as the “Green Mamba” and the Pigford crew rolled on with another 4.67. Steve Miller and the Winscott entry kept on rockin' as he posted another 4.87 to put the wounded team Hanson ‘Vette on the trailer. Rick had hurt a converter earlier and didn’t have time to change it. Richard Otwell and Rick Cowger were the next pair up. When Cowger had hurt his converter earlier, Otwell loaned him a spare and now they had drawn each other! Cowger runs a career best 4.89 but couldn’t catch Otwell’s 4.69. Larry Pearce posted another 4.79 to move forward when Swindoll left the red lite hangin’.
  
  Semi’s, and it’s on! Pigford draws Pearce and Larry has a .405 initiated 4.81 come up short to the 4.65 blast that Pigford lays down in the other lane. Every eye was on Richard Otwell and Miller to see who would advance and if they had something for the “Mamba”. Another stellar reaction time, as Miller posts a .411 and runs 4.89, only to see the win lite come on in Otwell’s lane. The Winscott team put out a super effort and will definitely be a force in '08. Richard had run a 4.69 to set up what should prove to be spectacular final between #1 and #2 in the points.
  
  Otwell’s Cavalier, powered by Naiser, & Tricky Ricky completed the burn out and headed for the beams. In the other lane, Pigford’s Reher-Morrison motored monster waited. They staged, the tree flashed green on both sides and they left with a .012 advantage to the Cavalier. At the 330’ mark, Joe’s Grand Am had made up the difference and they were side by side. At the stripe, the margin of victory was .0062 for the winner, and new TPSA Champion for 2007, Joe Pigford. Congratulations to Joe & Charlotte, and the crew, Jack and "the Merv" for a great season. The numbers were 4.680 @ 149.91 for Pigford to 4.698 @ 149.85 for Otwell. Pigford would leave Baytown with the Championship and the et record of 4.659 and Otwell had set the mph record by besting Joe’s 149.91 with a 149.93!

Also our thanks to the Tiremax group, Cypress Performance, and all of the event sponsors and promoters for their efforts. The TPSA teams deserve a salute for their performance as well and we thank all of you for your support of the TPSA.
  
  One race remains....November 10th @ San Antonio Raceway. Although Pigford has clinched the Championship, the other positions in the top ten will go down to the wire. 2nd place Otwell holds a 61 point advantage over Rick Hanson, and the other positions are tighter than that.   I wanted to thank everyone for the calls,visits and prayers since Sat. nite. The support has been overwhelming to say the least.
  
  I was released on Tues and allowed to come home--no more 4 AM pokes and prods. The Doc said I have 2 degree burns on my hands and face. There is a 3rd degree on my nose. I jokingly said, does that mean it's going to fall off--and he said very somberly it might!! He is going to look at it in a week and see if it will require some work. I'm confined to house until I go back to the Doc.
  
  Congratulations to Joe for the 4.66 and another trip to the winners circle.

  I went and visited with Lee this morning and he is doing very well given the circumstances. He is burned really bad but says he is not in much pain. We appriciate all the help from the TPSA members & HMP staff following the accident. Lee is at Herman hospital and likes hearing from all the fellow racers. The fire was caused by a leaking fuel bowl not checked after our jet change. Guess we were to excited about our 4.78 previous pass and got out of routine and didn't check for leaks. Lee has asked that we consider some manditory saftey rules & checks for next season its never any fun when someone gets hurt. The fire suit did an excellent job but an open face helment and 1 layer fire gloves caused him his injuries. Lee has said were going to fix the car and I hope he will want to return to the program. Lets keep the Staiger family in our prayers & wish for a speedy recovery. Thanks again Keith Hoover.

  Greetings from cyberspace. We're on the road, so the report will be of the condensed variety. Great weather and super track conditions were on tap for the 10th race of the "2007 No Excuses Tour" held at HMP. As always, the Baker family, John Mandabach, and the crew @ HMP had the track working and the entire facility was groomed to perfection. Fifteen teams were on hand to battle it out to see who would be the last man standing. After qualifying was complete, Richard Otwell's Naiser/Tricky Ricky powered, Cavalier was #1 with 4.692, Pigford @ 4.73, Lee Staiger continued to improve with an outstanding 4.78, Hughes improved as well with a 4.83, DH @ 4.86, "Mr. T" Terry Ashabranner is back, and ran 4.87. It's well known that drag racing is a family sport, often spanning several generations, and the Ashabranner family is a prime example of this. After Terry's beloved "ROOT BEER" was totalled in a crash earlier this year, he thought it would be months before he could come back out with a new ride. Mr. T's family has raced for years and to solve the dilema, his mom stepped up, bought a car that has a long and storied history in the TPSA (Spot), and continued to be not only one of Terry's biggest fans, but also his sponsor. Way to go Mrs. A! Terry stuck the HE&B engine out of his old 'bird into the new ride, and came to the track, The car is beautifully detailed and spotless: the way Terry, his family, and Jason keep 'em!
  
  1st round had two of the newest members, Jeff Storrs & the Don Wooten/ Talley team square off with Storrs taking the win. Richard Otwell drew the fast rising "General" Lee Staiger team. Otwell shook, and had to lift but Lee had more serious problems with a fire that started shortly after he launched the Camaro. He did a tremendous job of getting the car stopped and in his lane, but unfortunately suffered some burns that required a trip to the hospital. More details, and contact info for Lee are posted below. ***GET WELL SOON LEE*** The "Boxman" Hughes ran another 4.83 to stop the Cowger/Wood team, DH ran the "Dandy" Randy Elliott, and DH's 4.85 evened the series between the two at one each. The returning Mr T, driving his momma's car, (LOL!!) used a 4.90 to advance when "Big" Ben Worley's redlite came on. Pigford was scheduled to race newcomer RJ Dorsett's crowd pleasin' 57 Chevy, but RJ couldn't make the call after an apparent converter failure. Soooo, just for fun, Joe eases the "Green Mamba" with her Reher-Morrison power down the lane for a new TPSA record, 4.67! Eddie the "Dude" Conrad, and his son/crew had worked all week and some late nites just to make the event, but some odd gremlins kept them out of the lanes, which gave the Hanson team's Corvette, a competition bye, 4.93, into round 2. Aaron Hubbard, himself afflicted with some pesky gremlins all year, drew the bye, and indicated he might be a playa with a 4.87 out of "ol' Blue".
  
  2nd round had Mr. T moving on with a 4.86 @ 143.04 victory over the Camaro of Jeff Storrs, 4.92. The Storrs' team has only been back for a couple of races and are showing they came to play. Next up was Aaron H against the Otwell powerhouse. Aaron left first, and was never headed with another 4.87. Richard had some weirdness of his own on this nite as a drill bit caused a flat rear slick. This necessitated a change to a set of tires that the team didn't want to use, but had no choice. The end result was tire shake and RO had to lift. Next up were long time buddies, traveling companions, and "Hill Country Boyz", Donald Hughes and David Hubbard, They always have a great race and this one was no exception. The "Boxman" had a slight performance advantage, but DH was close tonite. They staged, the tree came down, and DH left with a slightly better rt. It looked like when they used to race each other in Super Gas....the cars were glued together going down track and DH's 4.84 barely got there first over Donald's quicker 4.83. Next, Pigford said the 4.67 was just for practice, and promptly laid down a new record 4.66 against Hanson's 4.95.
  
  Semi finals, and it's time to get serious. Could the three remaining Houston Engine & Balancing powered entries find a way around the juggernaut of team Pigford's R-M beast? The draw had Pigford vs. Ashabranner and showed the earlier .66 was no fluke with a nearly identical, 4.666 @ 148.71. Mr. T told this reporter it took his breath away when the "Mamba" came screamin' past so he stuck it in neutral and coasted thru, while watching Joe's numbers come up on the 'board! A great first outing for the Ashabranner team, and they're sure to improve at the remaining two races of the year. Next up; they race often in time trials, usually with great posturing and smack talk, but have yet to race each other in competition this year. Aaron would race his Dad to see which Hubbard would advance to the final. Aaron, driving Tommy Costales' Corvette at last years Pine Valley race, whupped up on the ol' man in the final there. This year, Aaron was in ol' Blue and looking to make it 2-0 in inter family competition. The kid was out first, .418 to "sleepy's" .438 and both cars would run in the .80's. The time slip said the ol' man got there first with a 4.85 to Aaron's 4.88.... proving the age old adage that youth and skill can be overcome by old age and treachery (some times).
  
  The final featured Pigford in his 5th final of the year and DH in his first. Pigford was calm & collected, gave Hubbard the move, and drove past DH's 4.86 with a 4.73. The margin of victory was .031, and as Joe's crew would say later, "picked up those valuable TPSA points!".
  
  Again our best wishes to Lee Staiger and his family for a speedy and complete recovery, and please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
  
  This was our last race of the season @ Houston Motorsports Park and we sincerely appreciate their continuing support of the TPSA. The new scales worked perfectly and are a welcome addition to a wonderful facility. Thanks to the entire Baker family, John Mandabach, the staff; and a special thanks to Cody, who worked the scale house.

  I had my first chance saturday to attend a TPSA race since its first year. I was amazed at the level of performance and competition. You guys are totally awesome. The people that have promoted the association and all the racers are second to none. Hell of a job. Lee get well soon and best wishes to all.   The next two weeks are gonna be real busy for the TPSA. First up is this Saturday, the 13th @ Houston Motorsports Park where we'll be headlining the event. Gates open @ 3pm, and HMP is open Friday nite if you need some additional laps or if you just wanna come hang out. Looks like we're in for some killer weather for this race with milder temps and low humidity in the forecast. The HMP event flyer is posted above for your convenience.
  
  October 20th is the Houston Raceway Park (Baytown) race. HRP will be open Friday, the 19th, for parking from 9am to midnite and time trials will be available from 1pm to 11pm. The HRP event flyer and Saturday schedule is posted above, and the TPSA program is Saturday only.
  
  I'll be leaving Friday, the 12th for HMP and plan to stay in the Houston area the week between the events and will have limited computer availability. Since the pit pundit, agent 660, and the inside TPSA reporter all travel with me, race reports, pic's, etc probably won't happen 'till after the Baytown race.   Are you ready? The 2007 TPSA "No Excuses Tour" is nearing the end of the line and rolling into HMP this Saturday. Who'll be on top and at the podium when the smoke clears? Pigford's held the points lead from the first event but Otwell, Hanson, Staiger, and Conrad still have a chance for a come from behind finish. Otwell and Hanson separated by a mere 34 points, have each raced seven events, and their finishes at the remaining races will count toward their season total. Pigford, Staiger, and Conrad have raced all of the prior nine events and will have "drops" to potentially improve their total. The only sure bet right now is there will be a new Champion this year....just as Otwell predicted at last year's Banquet.
  
  There have been plenty of surprises, upsets, and just plain weird stuff happen this year, and it ain't over yet! Will the top 5 continue to wreak havoc or will the "Boxman", Mr. T, Pearce, Worley, the newcomers Storrs, Wooten/Talley, Lump/Winscott, Naylor, Elliott, or one the Hubbards play spoiler?? Come on out to Houston Motorsports Park this Saturday and watch the drama unfold.

• Race #9....Evadale Raceway -- pit pundit, 10/ 2/07 10:08pm
  13 teams were on hand for the TPSA's return to Ben Bruce Memorial Airpark Raceway aka Evadale Raceway. The weatherman had promised cooler temps and low humidity, and Friday nite delivered very pleasant conditions for the early arrivals. By Saturday morning however, all of the cool air was gone, and by the time the call came out for the first TT, it was back to normal with 91* temps and 51% humidity. The teams of Conrad, Cowger/Wood, Elliott, Hanson, A. Hubbard, D. Hubbard, Hughes, Otwell, Pearce, Pigford, Staiger, Storrs, and Talley/Wooten were up for the task at hand.
  
  The 1st time trial went off @ 4:30pm without a hitch, and featured Pigford's 4.77 @ 147 leading the pack. Richard Otwell was 2nd with an early shutoff 4.83 @143. Donald the "Boxman" Hughes continued to show late season muscle with a 4.92 @142, followed by Conrad's 4.93, Staiger's 4.95, Hanson and A. Hubbard with 4.96's, and the rest close behind.
  
  The 2nd time trial didn't start 'till around 8:30 pm, as a massive oil down had put the action on hold. Fred and the crew did an outstanding job cleaning the track and re-prepping the left lane. Mr. Mike Bruce was on hand and he and Fred said they'd keep working on the lane 'till we were happy. Kudo's to Mr. Bruce, Fred, and the staff for their effort to produce the best conditions possible. Once the session began, The "Boxman" was the only car to improve with a fine 4.91 @ 143. DH grenaded a planetary which put the 'Bird out for the nite.
  
  First round action had Pigford with the "W" over Eddie Conrad. For the "Dude", it was a bad news/good news round as he went into the lead for the Lidiak Motorsports "Treeman Challenge" with a near perfect rt of .4002! Don Wooten, driving James & Samantha Talley's Camaro, advanced over Richard Otwell when something in the Cavalier went awry. Hughes sent Cowger to the trailer, A. Hubbard's 4.95 @ 142 defeated Jeff Storrs, and Larry Pearce moved on when Staiger left early. Rick Hanson drew the bye, and Randy the "Dandy" Elliott made a single when DH couldn't make the call.
  
  2nd round, Pigford took out Wooten with the best ET of the event, 4.76, Hughes ran a 4.91 to stop Pearce's 4.94 bid for a repeat win @ Evadale, Rick Hanson's 'Vette got a competition bye when Aaron Hubbard's 'Vette refused to start in the lanes. Rick waited on Aaron several minutes in a great show of sportsmanship, but 'ol Blue just wasn't gonna light. Elliott drew the bye in a weird situation that had the same two cars make singles in the first two rounds!
  
  The Semi's paired Hanson and Hughes in what looked to be a great matchup, but the "Boxman"'s redlite advanced Rick easily to his 3rd final of the year. Elliott knew he needed Divine Intervention to get past the "Green Mamba" of Pigford, and he made a tremendous effort with a .4003 lite! Pigford had to drive around him waaaay down track but the win lite flashed for Joe to send him to his 4th final.
  
  In the final, Hanson ran his best ET of the event, a 4.95 with a .428 rt, but he couldn't charm the "Snake" and Pigford ran him down with a 4.77. Joe Pigford and the crew had the Grand Am performing like a bracket car all nite and it paid off with his 4th win of 2007. Congat's also to the father/son Hanson team for their 3rd Runner Up of the year.
  
  The '07 points battle is tighter than ever, and with three events remaining, it's gonna come down to the wire!
  
  Thanks again to the Bruce family, track Manager Fred Irby, and the entire staff @ Evadale. And a special thanks to all of the fans that came out to support the TPSA and stuck it out during a long nite. Speaking of support, the TPSA will return to Ben Bruce Memorial Airpark Raceway in the 2008 season for three events.   It's time to go back to the "little track in the woods" @ Evadale. TPSA members are allowed to park Friday, and Saturday nite. If you want to come up early Saturday, the gates will be open @ 9am for the TPSA. Fred and the gang will have a spot on the pavement reserved for us so we can park as a group. The tentative schedule calls for TPSA qualifiers @ 4:30 and 5:30pm with 1st round scheduled for 7:00pm.

  Way too much goin' on at this race to report it all, but here's the Reader's Digest version. 14 teams made the trip to the Piney Woods of Diboll, near Lufkin, and were greeted by bright blue skies, temps in the mid 80's and humidity that felt about the same. Billy and the PVR crew had the track in great shape, and a few of the teams took advantage of the open time trials. The Talley's, and their Bickel Camaro became the newest member of the TPSA family, and veteran TPSA campaigner, Jeff Storrs, in his familiar Camaro returned after taking a couple of years off.
  
  After qualifying, Pigford's Reher-Morrison powered Grand Am led the way with a 4.73 @ 147.20. Richard Otwell and his Naiser fired Cavalier was right there with a 4.75 @ 147.54. Lee Staiger's, Cook, Lump & Benham bullet continues to impress with a 4.82 @ 143.95. Donald Hughes, Glenn's Machine entry was back with a 4.88 @ 142.95. The father/son team of David & Aaron Hubbard with Houston Engine & Balancing under the hood, fought hard for the #5 spot, with the ol' man DH prevailing this time. His 4.91 @ 141.91 just held off Aaron's, 4.92 @ 141.87. Aaron was pleased as this was the first time in several events that the 'Vette made a clean pass.
  
  1st round and the weather had improved to 75* and 80%. First pair out had the Rick Cowger/Derryl Wood team facing DH. Rick & Derryl have been chasing gremlins all year, but their 4.98 in qualifying proved they had made some progress. At the hit, DH's 'Bird stumbled, and Cowger advanced with his best pass of the nite, 4.93 @ 140.27 to cover the 4.91 @ 142.45 of Hubbard. Second pair saw the points leader Pigford, squaring off with the improving Donald Hughes. The "Boxman" was out first with a .1 rt advantage but the "Green Mamba" of Pigford was first to the stripe with a 4.72 to 4.87 decision. Good to see Donald, HR, and Glenn making progress after all of their hard work. Third pair featured the hard charging Otwell vs. "Big" Ben Worley. Richard would take the win with a 4.73 pass. Ben's another racer that has just been plagued with gremlins all year and hasn't shaken 'em loose yet. By luck of the draw, new comers Talley/Wooten and Storrs lined up. Storrs took the win with a 4.97 @ 139.84. Talley's ride has a small bracket motor in it for now just to shake the car down and finish the rest of the season. Rumor has it there will be a Reher-Morrison unit betweeen the frame rails for '08. Larry Pearce drew Aaron Hubbard and his 4.88 @ 142.63 took out the game 4.91 @ 141.96 of Aaron. Pearce had a good news/bad news kind of nite, but more on that later. The 'Vette's of Rick Hanson and Randy "the Dandy" Elliott were next. Rick and son Chad have been working hard and their results have proven it over the last few races. Rick's 4.93 @ 140.76 trailered Elliott's 5.10. The "Dandy's" great .409 lite gave him a .1221 rt advantage that tightened up the race to the stripe. The "General" Lee Staiger, gave Eddie "the Dude" his marching papers with a 4.85 @ 143.63 even though Eddie carried a .025 rt advantage. Eddie's Conrad Racing Camaro has improved lately, and his 4.89 @ 141.20 just fell a little short this time.
  
  2nd round and the action heats up. Lee Staiger advances with his best pass of the nite, 4.82 @ 144.32, over Pigford when Joe leaves the red lite hangin' on a 4.720 @ 147.78 hit. The 4.72 was low et of the event. Pearce runs another 4.8840 to stop Hanson's 4.9108, but that's only part of the story. In the closest race mathematically possible with today's four digit timing systems, Pearce won by .0001! That's not a misprint. Pearce's rt.. .4509 to Rick's .4242! That was a great race guys!! Needless to say Pearce's .0001 MOV moves him into the lead for the Lidiak AT THE STRIPE award. In the next pair, Rick Cowger slowed to a 4.98 but his .411 rt got him past Storrs 4.95, .449rt. Another awesome race with a .0094 MOV. Otwell moved into the semi's with a bye run of 4.728 with the top mph of the event, 148.27.
  
  Semi's, and the crowd's on the fence. Cowger and Pearce are first up and both do 100' burn outs that have the fans roaring. They back up, ease into the beams, and the unexpected happens. Officials and team members notice something is wrong with Larry's left wheelie bar...it's on the ground! Something has broken, Larry is backed off the line, and Cowger solo's into the final. Otwell and Staiger come to the line to see who'll face Cowger. They leave with nearly identical rt's and the Cavalier pulls ahead to a 4.73 victory over Lee's 4.84. Lee's been making steady progress, and this finish moves him into 3rd place in the championship points.
  
  The final featured Otwell, who is making a late season charge on points leader Pigford, and Cowger, in his first final this year with the new Cowger/Wood team. Cowger knew he needed a telepathic lite to have a chance and went for it, but it wasn't to be this nite. Otwell's driving and performance was not to be denied and he went to his 2nd winner's circle of 2007 with a 4.73. This year's Championship is gonna go down to the wire and every point is crucial. Who'll be THE MAN at the Banquet?? Stay tuned, there's lots of racing left before that question is answered.

This is our last scheduled race @ Pine Valley for the 2007 season, and we had a great time.
