Race report from Lonestar Motorsports Park, April 28th -- from the pit wall...., 04/30/07 10:42pm
The third race of the "2007 No Excuses Tour" @ LSMP began Friday nite with five teams taking advantage of some early tnt. Naylor, Staiger, Hughes, Cowger, and Pearce made some laps in preparation for Saturday's shootout. Staiger had brought an all star line up to help sort out the Camaro, and David Cook, Scott Benham, and Lump (Brian Self), were seen working their magic on the engine and chassis. No times were displayed, so it would be Saturday before ET's would be public knowledge.
The 15 teams of Conrad, Cowger/Wood, Crownover, Elliott, Hanson, A. Hubbard, D. Hubbard, Hughes, Naylor, Otwell, Pearce, Pigford, AD Rigmaiden, Staiger, and Worley were treated to sunny skies, high humidity, 80* temps, and DA's around 2400' when they arrived at the track Saturday morning.
Qualifying during the heat of the day, in summer type conditions, definitely proved to be a challenge. Richard Otwell had brought his own "all star" Jeff Naiser, to assist him in his quest for a TPSA victory, and it proved to be a good move, resulting in the #1 qualifying spot.
First pair out had Aaron Hubbard, back in Ol' Blue, falling to the "Green Mamba" of Joe Pigford's quickest run of the round, 4.84. Staiger got a freebie when after the burnout, Larry Pearce's throttle linkage fell off and he couldn't stage the car. AD Rigmaiden would record his first round victory of the year over Rick Hanson in the Hanson's familiar black 'Vette, and a first career round victory came for the S-10 of Clint & Laurie Crownover over Randy Elliott's 'Vette. Clint had a stellar .4075 RT. The next pair featured D Hubbard and Jim Naylor. DH was out first, .409 to .453, but Naylor's Steve Schmidt power ran him down with an .02 margin of victory, 4.90. #1 qualifier, Otwell, posted a 4.85 to trailer the Conrad Racing Engine entry of Eddie Conrad's, 4.97. Ben Worley received the competition bye when the Wood's Camaro, driven by Rick Cowger, couldn't make the call. The team diagnosed the problem as a broken lifter. Donald "the Boxman" Hughes was unable to make the call for first round as well due to an undetermined engine gremlin.
Round two showcased the quickest and fastest pair of cars during the preseason and of the young season. Otwell and Pigford brought 'em to the line and Pigford drew first, .427 to .448, but Otwell's NRC power, tuned this weekend by Jeff himself, motored by for a 4.77 to 4.85 victory. Jim Naylor would move into the semi's with his quickest run of eliminations, a 4.85, to park Crownover's out of shape 5.10. Staiger kept pace with a 4.92 lap to send AD back to the trailer. AD had been having issues all day which he thinks is carb or ignition related. Didn't hurt his RT any as he took over the Lidiak Treeman Challenge with a fine .4067. That eclipsed the previous best of Rick Cowger's .4069 by .0002! Worley, who has experienced some of the worse racing luck imagineable, got some back when he drew the bye run.
The semi's had "General Lee" marching on with a 4.91 conquest after Naylor blew the tires off of the Cavalier at the hit. In the other pairing, Otwell's 5.04 took care of Worley's tire spinning 5.49.
The final had the #1 Qualifier against #4. All the railbirds had money on Otwell, but Lee was G.A.W.N. (gone) at the green (.409 rt) and was way out front early. The question was could he stay there?? The crowd heard Richard whop, whop, whop, whop, trying to keep the Naiser hp hooked up and in check, but when the scoreboard flashed, it was all Lee Staiger with his best run of the day, 4.89 to Richard's quicker, but later 4.86. This was Lee's first TPSA win. Plenty exciting stuff to say the least.
Lee wanted to acknowledge Joe Pigford for the use of the thirdmember that allowed him to race. He had broken one in TT's and "Pigman" stepped up and loaned him one. Pretty good example of what the TPSA and it's members are all about.
Special thanks to the Hennessey family, Todd, Jennifer, Pat, and all of the staff at LSMP. The entire facility is first rate and the friendly environment is icing on the cake. Please remember to keep Jeff in your thoughts and prayers for a quick and complete recovery.
That's it for now. Three races down, two different winners, three different runner ups. The next event on the TPSA schedule is May 19th, at Ben Bruce Memorial Raceway in beautiful Evadale. Preliminary info has the gates opening @ 12 noon, TT's @ 1 pm and eliminations starting @ 5 pm. Click their link on the TPSA homepage for most current info.

- ****LONESTAR MOTORSPORTS PARK THIS SATURDAY****
-- DH, 04/26/07 10:51pm
The TPSA returns to Sealy this Saturday, April 28th, for the third race of the 2007 No Excuses Tour! Gates open at 12 noon with time trials scheduled to start around 1 pm. Looks like the weather is gonna co-operate with temps near 80* and only a 20% chance of moisture for Saturday. Friday nite t-n-t will be available with the gates opening @ 6 pm. Overnite parking is allowed.
As a reminder, your TPSA entry is good for the car and driver and two crew. Any additional crewmembers will pay the track gate fee. Be sure to tell 'em at the gate you're with TPSA and give them your name. My trailer (green & white motorhome w/white stacker) serves as race control. You must come by my trailer and get your tech card and TPSA entry. Without a tech card you cannot get your credentials.
We will have two TPSA time trials (procedure calls for each car to make one in each lane) and once eliminations start there will be about one hour between rounds. If you want to be part of the round drawings/pairings just come by the trailer about 30 minutes before the round. We usually pick someone from the crowd to draw names and the round pairings will posted at my trailer.
We will weigh the winners after each round of eliminations and the scales will be available during TT's so you can check your weight. If you have any questions just come by the trailer.
Looking forward to seeing all of you there, and some great racing at Lonestar Motorsports Park. I'll be @ the track Friday nite so call my cell if you have any questions.

Don't know what else to say or how to explain it any better to you Jason. You've had several guys try to explain it, including an ex Pro Stock Truck and long time Comp Eliminator owner/driver. Believe me, he knows what he's talking about with more experience (particularly SBC) than any other two members combined. You can learn from folks that have been there and done that if you're willing to pay attention. There are numerous combinations that don't fit the TPSA rules and the one you're fixated on is one of them. Sorry if your bullet doesn't fit, but the rules have been the same for going on 7 years now, so it's a safe bet you didn't build it for TPSA competition. (NT) -- DH, 04/25/07 9:34pm
- D. H. Looks like you did not read pigman's reply. The small blocks won't hang as they are. (NT) -- Non Member who learned the hard way, 04/25/07 10:00pm
You have to click on "smallblocks in TPSA" posted by "Pigman". But here's his post.... "I took another look at the rules and it looks like 2250# would be minimum weight for a competitive 18 degree, sheetmetal tunnelram w/ 2 carbs. 23 degree head would save 100# but I don't think it would be a good trade off. Now find you a GOOOOD head porter. If the heads won't kick ass you're fixin' to waste a bunch of $$$. Put this thing together using all the latest technology (dry sump, big cam, slot lifters, light rods, light pistons, etc.)and get ready to turn it 10,000 rpm. Put it in a GOOOOD car on a short tire with a steep (5.71+) gear and hang on. It ought to be competitive, it might even win, but it's gonna love valve springs and its probably going to want rods, pistons, and rings every 100 runs (we changed every 50 or so in Pro Truck). By the way this ain't no cheap motor in case you ain't figured that out yet. Good luck and see you at the races." There you have it..DH (NT) -- "It ought to be competitive, it might even win"......., 04/25/07 10:26pm

Down the page, pics of Conrads new entry in the (delivery) truck wars are posted. Never content with the status quo (and some say with too much time on their hands) the Hill Country Boyz put together a new entry of their own...."Pro Implement." Houston Engine & Balancing was tagged for the engine mods, and Platt Bros performed the necessary chassis adjustments and hood scoop install. Initial testing has gone well, although exact numbers and hp figures are closely guarded. The Boyz have issued a challenge to CRE to put mudgrips on their truck, and "chain 'em up, grass or mud, it don't matter."
Initial test launch, notice the front wheels in the air, and the weight transfer to the rear tires.

It's my understanding the original Dictator's (Mike, Mark, & John) set the rules up in late 2001, or early 2002. Same thing for not allowing spread port BBC's, and all of the other rules that are utilized to this day. I have no idea what criteria they used, or how the decisions were made, but they have certainly stood the test of time well. The longevity and stability of our rules is an intregal part of the TPSA and is essential for long term growth and success. Jason, to answer your question specifically, a legal SBC combo is welcome and cordially invited, just like any other legal engine combo, to come run with us. (NT) -- DH, 04/25/07 1:51am
- SB -- JASON, 04/25/07 8:36pm
- ARCHIVES -- RICK H, 04/25/07 9:46am
When the TPSA was formed, the intention was to provide a venue where existining tube chassis door cars and engine combinations could run Heads-Up, no break out, first to the finish line wins type of racing. Mike Morgan and Mark Neberman recognized the potential for this type of racing and the existing cars were the Super Gas cars of the day looking for something different. The vast majority of S/G cars in 2001, and currently, use a big block Chevy. Mike Morgan spent a considrable amount of time researching the existing combinations of the time and the performance potential. The origanal concept was simply a maximum cubic inch of 585 and a minimum weight of 2450#'s. The research revealed a large number of engine sizes being used. In an effort to devolope the class as well as allow as many combinations as possible, the rules were devoloped to give an existing combination less than the maximum CID of 585 CID a weight break to eqalize the competition without causing any undue hardships on any racer by forcing a potential participant in the TPSA to have to build a larger more powerful engine to be competitive. There was no original rules provisions for a small block. There were those small block racers who had cars that fit the rules and wanted to race with the TPSA and in the interest of a larger car count at any given event, the small block rules were created. Every effort was put forth to create the SBC rules and they were listed in great detail giving a SBC racer a tremondous weight break to provide as much parity as possible. The small blocks were given a 450# weight break in base form over the BBC.
The canted valve heads were specifically excluded because of the potential performance advantage, as well as the cost to build that type engine. A SBC with canted valve heads, as shown with the Pro Stock Trucks, could make power similar to a single four barrel BBC of the time at a considerable cost. Morgan and Neberman were simply trying to give racers that already had a combination, BBC or SBC, a different place to race. Obviously as time marches on and racers being racers the advancement of the class has been incredible. The power being made with a single 4 barrell, conventional head BBC was never dreamed of when TPSA was born. The rules, as written 7 years ago, have stood the test of time and the class has devoloped by leaps and bounds through the years with other racing classes using our rules as a model. The original rules were devoloped for the sake of the racers with a tremendous amount of painstaking research as well as the negitive input from those who didn't care for the rules trying to push their points. While unfortunate that all combinations are not allowed, we the racers of the TPSA that have worked within the rules, have made gains unheard of when TPSA started. 4.65 with a 565 BBC,single 4 barrell, conventional heads, is a monster achievement and done within the 7 year old rules.
Please build any small block you care to within the rules and come race with us. You are always welcome in the TPSA!!
It's not out of question the current TPSA dictator(s) may deem it necessary to revise a rule from time to time, but if it's not broke why fix it??

Sponsor Spotlite COLONY ONE AUTO CENTER

-- ., 04/25/07 7:23pm
Charter members of the TPSA, Rick Hanson, and son Chad, have been fixtures on the TPSA circuit since the beginning with their immaculate 'Vette. Rick has also served the organization as an "advisory dictator" as well as taking charge of the annual TPSA Championship Banquet for the past couple of years.
In addition, Rick's Colony One Auto Center, located at 1131 Dulles Avenue in Stafford, has been a TPSA sponsor since it's inception. Chad serves as a technician for the firm. Colony One has been in business since 1991 and has serviced over 141,118 customers as of April 25th, and that number increases every 60 seconds. The mainstay over the years has been, as the motto says, "Remember, if it's between the bumpers, we can most likely take care of it" with exemplary customer service.
Colony One has recently added trailer repairs and service to the list of services available. Rick says "We would like the opportunity to assist you with your trailer needs. Our intentions are to repair, maintain, modify, or virtually do anything a customer has in mind for their trailer that does not have to be pulled with a semi tractor. This a new part of our existing business, and I don't know the limits of our capabilities until we find one we can't, or choose not to tackle. We have plenty of area, with security, to park your trailer while being repaired. Our labor rate and parts pricing will be comensorate with trailer repairs elsewhere with special pricing given to TPSA members."
Visit Colony One at www.colonyoneauto.com, or give 'em a call @ 281-980-4440 when your trailer, or daily driver needs repair or servicing.

- HP per Pound -- Bam-Bam, 04/24/07 8:26am
I just have to bring up the small block issue one more time. So shoot me... OK some of the top performers are claiming 1100 HP from a 540 cubic BB engine. So I did a little math and that equals 2.14 HP per Pound. It also equals 2.04 HP per Cubic inch. Which is pretty amazing considering the rules. Looking at the SB rules which haven't changed in 3 to 4 years. Are you Small Block Guru's telling me you can't make 980 hp ? Now I am no engine guy. I can assemble one and know how they work but don't assume I am an authority on the subject. So come on take me to school on the subject. 980 HP at 2100 lbs which is about as light as you can go. ought to run with the BB'S
Right or am I way off Base.

- Ok so I didn't read the rules al the way to the end... And I agree they would be some valve spring eatin rascals. Just another question though since there is no cubic inch limit. would it be feasable to build more cubes there by lowering the 10000 rpm needed to make that power? (NT) -- Bam-Bam, 04/24/07 12:30pm

- like I said in the above post the new lsx block will go out to 500 ci and that worries me since I don't have deep pockets like some of my friends ...this is why I've stated we need to adjust the rules to a straight ci to weight scale and yes from what I've seen the block will handle high hp numbers this block was designed by warren so... (NT) -- Dreamweaver, 04/24/07 9:16pm
- I thought we had a CI to weight in place now. (NT) -- Maybe I cant read, 04/24/07 10:18pm
We're researching the LSX block now. The BBC's are limited to 4.840 bore spacing, 9.800 or 10.200 deck height only, which makes some blocks illegal in TPSA and the LSX may fall into the same catagory for much the same reasons. The SBC debate always gets the board going, but don't look for any SBC rule changes regarding heads or valve angle. A while back, VooDoo posted some info on some trick new 18* SBC stuff that he thought might be competitive. Could be an option for a die hard SBC racer, but there's not much time between rounds for normal maintenance of a 10,000 rpm SBC at one of our events. For more SBC discussions, check out the archives. (NT) -- DH, 04/25/07 1:00am
- FLASHBACK.....How far we've come!!......
Received this history lesson via email from Rick Hanson: "This is the second race of the season in late 02. We were #1 qualifier with a 5.43 with my old 496 injected on alcohol. Time marches on!! It was a gorgeous Saturday morning and I was on the radio on the Car Doctor ( Skeeter Lothringer ) show promoting the heck out of TPSA for Mike and Mark. Skeeter is a friend of mine and he was looking for something new for his show. Chad was driving that day. I had to go to my service managers wedding. ( Priorities??!! ) I don't recollect the outcome of the round."

Rick & Chad Hanson have been involved with the TPSA since it's inception, and have many great stories to tell. Today, if you want the TPSA record, you must run quicker than a 4.699! That's a long way from that 5.43 just five short years ago...... (NT) -- historian, 04/25/07 2:23am

A "Senior" Moment -- DH, 04/16/07 3:50pm
This is a true account recorded in the Police Log of Sarasota, Florida.
An elderly Florida lady did her shopping and upon returning to her car, found four males in the act of leaving with her vehicle. She dropped her shopping bags and drew her handgun, and screamed at the top of her voice , "I have a gun, and I know how to use it! Get out of the car!"
The four men didn't wait for a second invitation. They got out and ran like mad. The lady, somewhat shaken, then proceeded to load her shopping bags into the back of the car and got into the driver's seat. She was so shaken by the event that she could not get her key into the ignition. She tried and tried, and then realized why she could not start her car. For the same reason she realized why there was a football, Frisbee, and two twelve-packs of beer in the front seat.
A few minutes later, she found her own car parked four or five spaces farther down. She loaded her bags into the car and drove to the police station to report her mistake. The sergeant to whom she told her story couldn't stop laughing. He pointed to the other end of the counter where four pale men were reporting a car jacking by a mad, elderly woman described as white, less than five feet tall, glasses, curly white hair, and carrying a large handgun.
No charges were filed.
Moral of the story:
If you're going to have a Senior Moment, make it memorable.

Residents will tell you it's not a good idea; but if you must, be sure to check the area for natives like the one pictured below before you pose. This snake weighed 97 lbs, was 9' 1" long, and was killed just west of beautiful, downtown Burnet, Texas.

I received a bunch of emails and calls to verify this photo and it is genuine! -- DH, 04/16/07 4:14pm

Chassis Tuning Tips

The board's so quiet everyone must be testing; working on improving their chassis setup in order to maximize performance. Like the fella above demonstrates so vividly, learning to optimize your combination with a better understanding of chassis setup, including preload and/or corner weights, IC, etc., can help you lower those ET's. A set of wheel scales can make your life easier, but what if you don't have scales handy? It's easy to calculate basic IC info, just go to www.inductionmotorsports.com/ic.html and follow the directions on the page. Once you have entered the numbers for you car, it will calculate instant center length and height, as well as anti-squat numbers. Simply change the numbers, based on available settings with your chassis, to plot 4 link changes.... -- sure beats the old days of graph paper or drawin' on the garage floor!, 04/15/07 5:33pm

Sealy Race -- Pigman, 03/26/07 3:01pm
Well, we had a good race at Sealy, a little dicey down track but manageable. I'd like to thank the Henneseys and the staff at LSRP for having the TPSA at this event. I really feel bad for Mr.T.;don't like to see anybody tear up their racecar but especially this guy. Hope he gets it back together soon. Thanks to "Animal Jack" and "The Merv" for great crew work and a good tune up, Charlotte and Deanna(our "pit tootsies")for sandwiches and soda water, and of course "The Green Mamba" for stayin' under me and off the guardrail. See you guys at Temple.

Race report from Lonestar Motorsports Park -- view from the pits...., 03/26/07 6:35pm
The second race of the season had the TPSA caravan rolling into Lonestar Motorsports Park. The teams started arriving Friday nite, and some last minute thrashing and a couple of test hits were observed at the test and tune.
Ashabranner, Conrad, Cowger/Wood, Crownover, Elliott, Hanson, A. Hubbard, Hughes, Otwell, Pearce, Pigford, AD Rigmaiden, Staiger, and Worley were greeted with cloudy skies and with a strong headwind of 20mph, gusting to 25, early Saturday afternoon. This was the first race of the season for the Cowger/Wood team and the premier for AD Rigmaiden's new ride. Donny Williams, Jim Naylor and D Hubbard would sit this one out with gremlins that couldn't be exorcised in time to make the event.
During the qualifying rounds, Terry (Mr T) Ashabranner had an incident with the top end guardrail, and Lee Staiger's and AD's engines developed some issues that would keep them from making the call for 1st round. Thankfully, the popular Mr T is fine and the first report has the damage to "Rootbeer" classified as mostly cosmetic.
The first pair had A Hubbard draw Ben Worley. Hubbard was in DH's 'Bird as the 'Vette was on injured reserve for the weekend. "Big Ben" was out first with a .414 lite, but the younger Hubbard would get there first with a 4.85 (.418rt) to Ben's 5.06. A rematch between the last event's finalists came to the line next. Joe Pigford's "Green Mamba" would take on Eddie "the Dude" Conrad. Pigford showed he's got all of the bases covered with a .418rt initiated 4.78 to trailer Conrad's 4.89. Next pair had Rick Hanson face off with the "Boxman" Donald Hughes. "Boxman" pulled the trigger first, but when he had to pedal to a 5.14, the 'Vette of Hanson came steaming by with a 4.98, .452rt. Richard Otwell had been dealing with some issues during qualifying but he posted his best et of the event, a 4.89, (.435rt) to put Clint Crownover's S-10 (.420rt 4.99) back in the box. Randy Elliott was trying to win the first round for the second event in a row but a redlite (.393) would advance Rick Cowger's .406rt 5.13 to the next round. This rt gives the Cowger/Wood team the lead in the Lidiak Motorsports "Treeman Challenge". Larry Pearce put a period on the round with his 4.97 competition bye run.
2nd Round...Both Hanson and Pearce missed the tree with a slight advantage going to Pearce, but when both drivers had to pedal it before the 330' mark, Rick was able to pull out the win with a 5.66. Pigford and Cowger pulled into the water box next and Pigford moved into the semi's with a flawless 4.79. Cowger had a .05 advantage at the tree, but slowed to a 5.37. A pair that seems to draw each other frequently, Otwell and A Hubbard, would conclude this round. At the hit, the redlite comes on in Aaron's lane (.387) and he has to watch Otwell's shutoff 9.83 idle into the semi's.
The semi's featured Hanson against Otwell's Cavalier. Rick took a .10 rt advantage and never looked back as Richard's troubled 5.13 wasn't enough to catch the 5.00 of the Vette. Pigford improved to a 4.75 on his bye run.
The track crew at LSMP was working overtime, dragging and prepping the track to insure optimum conditions for the racers. Also, the headwind that had wreaked havoc most of the day had subsided for the final. Pigford showed his appreciation with the low et of the event, a 4.74 @ 144.51. Hanson did leave first with a .443 lite, but his 5.09 would deliver a runner up finish for the day. Congratulations to all of the teams for a great turnout and event!
Special thanks to the Hennessey family, Todd, Jennifer, and the staff of LSMP. The entire facility is first rate and the friendly environment is icing on the cake.
The next event on the TPSA schedule is April 7th, at Temple Raceway. Further info will be posted when as it's available.

- LSRP & TPSA -- RICK H, 03/26/07 5:27pm
Many thanks to the crew at Lonestar Motorsports Park for hosting the TPSA event this past Saturday. The results were better than we hoped for but we'll take it!!! Sometimes the slow junk WILL make it to the finals no matter how much we try to tune it. The track was a bit dicey past 330 but manageable. The LSRP crew did a good job. Alot of thanks to Chad Hanson, without who's help this would be impossible. Thanks to Kristen and Daniel. A special thanks to Mark Konarik of Mark Konarik Racing Heads who has spent more time than he's had to, helping with the tune-up. And a very special thanks to my wife Trish. She can't make all of the races but when she does we do well. Hmmmm. Joe Pigford is a class act and if you have to get whooped it may as well be by a good guy in a great car. By the way if we only had to race 40 ft I woulda won!!!

, 03/25/07 4:50pm
Fifteen teams were present for the TPSA's return to Lonestar Motorsports Park and the second race of 2007. A very strong headwind stymied many of the teams and presented everyone with some chassis setup challenges. After two rounds of qualifying, the top six were:

2. Lee Staiger (Cook-Self-Benham...4.84
3. Aaron Hubbard (Houston Engine)...4.89
4. Larry Pearce (Conrad Racing)...4.935
5. Eddie Conrad (Conrad Racing)...4.936
6. Donald Hughes (Glenn's Machine)...4.94
The quickest ET's posted during eliminations:
1. Joe Pigford...4.74 final round, track was perfect and the headwind had subsided.
2. Aaron Hubbard...4.85
3. Eddie Conrad...4.896
4. Richard Otwell (Naiser Racing)...4.898
5. Larry Pearce...4.97
6. Rick Hanson (Johnson Automotive)...4.98
7. Clint Crownover (Houston Engine)...4.99
Thanks to the Hennessey family for bringing the TPSA back to Lonestar Motorsports Park, and a special "shout out" to Todd, Jennifer, and the entire staff of LSMP, for providing a well prepared track with a friendly atmosphere! The full race report will be posted soon.

****LONESTAR MOTORSPORTS PARK THIS SATURDAY****
TREEMAN CHALLENGE and the AT THE STRIPE CHALLENGE presented by:
-- DH, 03/22/07 9:33pm
The TPSA returns to Sealy this Saturday with the Come and Take It series! Gates open at 12 noon with time trials scheduled to start around 2 pm. Looks like the weather is gonna co-operate with temps near 80* and only a 10% chance of moisture.
See ya in the lanes....

Race Report from HMP -- from the pit wall..., 03/13/07 10:07pm
All right race fans, pull up a chair, grab your favorite brew, and get caught up on what when on at the TPSA Season Opener at Houston Motorsports Park, March 10th. If you weren't there, you better have a doctor's excuse or note from the boss. There was more action than a dimestore novel with upsets, records set, new rides, updated rides, and plenty of drama.
Sixteen teams signed their tech cards but only fourteen would make the call for first round. Lance Rutland, in the family's '63 Vette, was trying to run both the 5.0 index race and with the TPSA. The time trials and eliminations were back to back, so the Rutland's withdrew the TPSA entry. Donny Williams was back with the Chevelle and lookin' good in open tt's, but couldn't make the call which gave us an even 14 car field. Preliminary inspection suggests a broken camshaft. How can the nicest guy out there continue to have worse luck than any other three members combined? Through it all Donny still had a smile on his face and said he'd try to be at Sealy on the 24th. Hang in there Donny, it's got to turn around soon!
The first pair had Aaron Hubbard draw Richard Otwell, who has been the terror of off season testing. Ol' Blue (& black??) had made noticeable improvement since last year but Aaron's .425 initiated 4.84 fell to Otwell's best pass of the event, 4.70 (.459 lite.) Otwell was just .0071 from recording the TPSA's first official "60". Hughes drew the "Green Mamba" of Joe Pigford and when the Boxman got loose, Joe was into the 2nd round with a 4.72. Donald had become a certified member of the 4.80 club with a 4.87 during TT's and has some left. Plenty of lil gremlins in the "Boxman's" pit had him borrowing converters, slicks, and other essentials which kept him from realizing his full potential. Next pair had the "Dude" Conrad, against the S10 of Clint Crownover. Rt's were close, .429 to .425 respectively, and at the stripe it was the Dude's 4.87 over C3's 4.95. It seems every team has found some performance over the winter and the truck is there too. "Big" Ben Worley put his Ness Grand Am into the next round with a 4.97 when Mr. T Ashabranner was uncharacteristically late with his quicker 4.90. Naylor, in his first outing with his new Bickel Cavalier, posted a 4.87 to trailer the Hanson family's, with Rick at the wheel, 4.98 hit. Randy Elliott was back with his familiar 'Vette and moved on when Larry Pearce had problems at the line. The last pair featured David Hubbard against Lee Staiger. Lee and the Cook, Benham, and Self group thrashed hard just to make the event and was still looking for pushrods early Saturday morning. How early you say??...ask DH, he can tell you..LOL. DH's .411 rt was out first on Lee's .436 and he needed it all to hold off Lee by .0023 at the stripe, 4.8302 to 4.8077. Probably won't hold up for the season but DH's numbers, .411 and .0023 lead the Lidiak Challenges for the moment.
2nd Round....Yep, the unlikely happens. Otwell draws Pigford, #1 vs #2 mano a mano and toe to toe! The outcome would prove to be anti-climatic as Otwell darted out of the groove and Joe Pigford records the first official "60", a 4.699. Congratulations to Joe and his crew, and especially Charlotte! Could have been a great race as the rt's were .459 to a .460. The second pair had arch rivals (although friends) Eddie "the Dude" Conrad vs the Bird of DH. Conrad gave DH back what DH had given Staiger the round before with a holeshot 4.84 to send DH's late 4.82 back to the roost. The margin of victory was .0039. Naylor and Elliott both ran 5.08's in the next pair but Naylor's .421 parked "Dandy's" .447 rt. Worley finished the round with a ez 6.13 on his bye.
The semi's had Conrad advancing with a 4.86 over Naylor's late and out of shape 5.19. Jim was another member who worked long hours just to make the event and has the power to make his presence known. Pigford's run to the final was made easier when Big Ben left before the tree was activated. When Ben gets more seat time in the new ride and a little more test time he'll make some noise.
The final was set. Most likely the two "senior" members of the TPSA (we don't "card" 'em at tech) Pigford and Conrad were facing off for the bragging rights, cash, and huge HMP trophy. The burnouts were complete, they both staged, the tree came down, Pigford left, the Dude didn't, the tree was green in both lanes, and Pigford motored off to the Winner's Circle with a 4.75. Unofficial reports suggest Eddie had a "senior moment"! A great effort by both teams and congratulations to them and all of the teams.
A few teams that went above and beyond to make the first race deserve some special recognition: Larry Pearce, Jim Naylor, Donald Hughes, Lee Staiger, Donny Williams, and the Hansons were all unsure if they could make the race and a couple of them had to finish their cars at the track Saturday. Thanks for the extra effort from these guys and everyone that made the opener a success!
Next up is Lonestar Motorsports Park (Sealy) on March 24th. A race day schedule will be posted here when it's available.

2. Richard Otwell 4.707 @ 148.66... Pre season testing had Otwell in the .60's every pass, just missed here but ran top mph of the event. New official track mph record and TPSA record.
3. Lee Staiger 4.807... new career best for Lee and crew
4. David Hubbard 4.823
5. Aaron Hubbard 4.840... career best for the driver and 'ol Blue.
6. Eddie Conrad 4.842... improved from his #8 qualifying effort of 4.92 to make it to finals.
7. Jim Naylor... 4.873 slipped from his qualifying 4.837 (#3)performance but still finished as a semi finalist.
Congratulations and thank you to each of the fifteen TPSA teams that provided a great turnout for the first event of the year. Thanks to the Baker family, John Mandabach and the Staff of HMP for their continued support of the TPSA! Full race report with more info and pictures will be posted soon!

*****SEASON OPENER @ HOUSTON MOTORSPORTS PARK THIS SATURDAY***** -- DH, 03/ 7/07 3:34pm
It's race time! The Baker's, John Mandabach, and the staff will have the track ready, the weather looks killer, and we're expecting a high car count for our first race of the season.
As a reminder, your TPSA entry ($125) is good for the car and driver and two crew. Any additional crewmembers will pay the track gate fee. Be sure to tell 'em at the gate you're with TPSA and give them your name. My trailer(green & white motorhome w/white stacker)serves as race control. You must come by my trailer and get your tech card and TPSA entry. Your 2007 TPSA membership dues ($100) will be collected at that time. Without a tech card you cannot get your armbands. If you want to be part of the round drawings/pairings just come by the trailer about 30 minutes before the round. We usually pick someone from the crowd to draw names and the round pairings will posted at my trailer.
We will have two TPSA time trials (procedure calls for each car to make one in each lane) and once eliminations start there will be about one hour between rounds(see schedule posted above). There will be open TT sessions if you need additional laps. For you new guys, HMP runs a very tight schedule and you must report to the lanes on time or you'll forfeit the TT or round! They will not wait for you. This is YOUR responsibility so listen to the PA and keep track of which class is being called to the lanes. Also, be sure to make the driver's meeting @ 3pm, and if you have any questions be sure to ask. Everyone did a good job of being ready and getting to the lanes on time last year and we thank you. We will weigh after each round and the scales will be available during TT's so you can check your weight. If you have any questions just come by the trailer.
Looking forward to seeing all of you there, and some great racing at Houston Motorsports Park for the season opener. I'll be @ the track Friday nite so call my cell if you have any questions.
See ya in the lanes....

This Saturday will be the first race of the new "Treeman Challenge", and the "At the Stripe Challenge" presented by Lidiak Motorsports. The "Treeman Challenge" will award the best Reaction Time of the year (during eliminations, you do NOT have to win the round) with $500 cash and an award at the 2007 Banquet. The "At the Stripe Challenge", also a season long contest, will award the WINNER of the closest round of competition (smallest margin of victory) with $500 cash and an award at the 2007 Banquet. TPSA racers do not have to sign up for these special programs, nor is there any charge to participate in them. Thanks to Gary and Lidiak Motorsports for their continued support of the TPSA! Look for his "hot" links on the Homepage. -- DH, 03/ 8/07 3:44pm

From the pit wall.... -- ., 03/ 7/07 12:56am
This Saturday, March 10th @ Houston Motorsports Park is the 2007 season opener for TPSA. Since you can't tell the playa's without a program, here's a brief review and spy report from the teams that have confirmed they're ready to rumble.
Everyone's pre-season favorites, dubbed the "Triplets" because of the similarity in performance. Photo's from top to bottom:
Jim Naylor: Bickel Cavalier, powered by Steve Schmidt, only one 330' test hit shows low 4.70 (or better) potential.
Richard Otwell: Ness Cavalier, 4.60's power by local talent Jeff Naiser, quickest and fastest car during the off season.
Joe Pigford: Stroupe Grand Am, Reher-Morrison power, runs bottom .70's on an ice rink. Crafty veteran who knows his way around a race car and track.

These guys want to ruin the "Triplets" debut:
Team Conrad Racing Engines:
.....Eddie Conrad will begin the season with the same combo in his Camaro as last year which ran in the 4.80 range. Chassis, and other upgrades should provide for lower ET's.
.....Rick Cowger will drive for Derryl Wood with a new engine combo (and other upgrades) in the Camaro's framerails. Should prove to be another solid 4 second runner.
.....Larry Pearce is the ringer of the group with his Cavalier. Major engine upgrades and fresh paint that even his teammates haven't seen. Should have at least .70's power, but with no testing can't put him in with the "Triplets" just yet.
.....Donny Williams is back with his crowd pleasin' Chevelle with chassis updates and more power. One of the most popular drivers of the group.
Team Houston Engine and Balancing:
......Terry Ashabranner made the winter testing pay off in his Firebird with his first 4.80 time ticket. Some improvements to the chassis will begin to pay big dividends with more laps. The Ashabranner family is the host of the Root Beer Nationals.
....Clint Crownover's S-10 is the only pickup in the group and he has run in the 4.90's with ease. Needs a little more testing and chassis tuning. Good long shot to bet on.
.....Randy Elliott hopes to run the full season in his 'Vette and chassis upgrades and tweaking the drive train should reward him with consistant 4 second runs.
.....Aaron Hubbard is back in 'Ol Blue, the venerable Corvette, which is older than the driver. Upgrades include body, chassis, and engine. Limited testing, but should be a solid 4 second ride.
.....David Hubbard will be back in his Ness Firebird that has won back to back TPSA Championships. In limited testing has run mid 4.70's. On paper, the newer, more powerful entries have an advantage, but they don't race time slips.
Team Glenn's Machine:
.....Donald Hughes is back for the '07 season with the same Baretta but everything is different. New paint, chassis upgrades, and major power improvements will make the two time series runner-up even more formidable.
Team Hanson:
.....Pops (Rick) gets the nod for the driving chores this year in the Corvette with Chad his son, the 2006 Rookie of the Year, doing the wrenching. Unofficial teammates with the "Pro Stock Rocker", he'll be using Steve Schmidt components assembled by long time engine builder Sid Johnson.
Team Mr Mad/AD Rigmaiden:
.....New car for the runner up at the last race of 2006, the only race he entered. Had low 4.90 power in the old car and with the new pipe and some upgrades will only be better. No test results are available but he has shown he'll be a force.
Team Staiger:
.....Lee's the quiet one you know to watch out for. Had plenty of power in the Camaro last year but the little gremlins popped up at all of the wrong times. Look for this team to make a big jump in the standings this year.
Team Worley:
.....Ben and Donna are two of the nicest people in the TPSA. Another team that was just "snake bit" last year, look for them to turn it around this year with their new Ness Grand Am and the improvements they made over the winter.
Dave Donalson (Vega), Don Holcomb (Monte Carlo), and Gary Winscott (GTO) can't make the opener, but will join the tour ASAP.
Several of these teams plan to be testing at Houston Motorsports Park this Friday, March 9th, in a final tuning session. Bring the family out Saturday (or both days) check out the cars, meet the teams and drivers, and be there in person to see how your favorite begins the new season. See ya there.

- T'was the week of the races, and all through the shops. Not an engine was roaring, not even the laptops. Trailers, Trucks, Motorhomes, and crews. Wondering soon, what would be the news. Would the offseason work soon pay off, Or would it be back to the shop! Load the trailers, head to Houston. To HMP for the first race of the season! Lots of smoke, Lots of rubber. Now the butterflies start to flutter. Flash of amber, flash of green. Now the crowd starts to scream!! Sixty foot, then half track. Now there's no turning back. Finish line, then the shoots. Now the clocks start to compute. Scoreboard lights, flashbulb pops. See which driver came out on top!!!! GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE, CANT WAIT TO SEE HOW IT DEVELOPS! -- DBL A, 03/ 6/07 9:18pm

- The Season Opener is this Saturday, March 10th, @ HMP

Plenty of new rides, new combo's, and new faces for the 2007 season, and the "Boxman" plans to be a major player with his new Glenn's Machine bullet, chassis upgrades, and updated paint and graphics.
Ya gotta be there.....there have been some great numbers posted in pre-season testing but will it be Reher-Morrison, Naiser, Self, Conrad, HE&B, Schmidt, Johnson, Lump & Benham, Glenn's Machine or ??? power that will be in the Winner's Circle? - Hi Tech -- fly on the wall, 03/ 4/07 1:19am
As promised: the lowdown on the new high tech (and extremely expensive) PS shock system. At the Tokyo auto show the breakdown of the new Honda F1 car clearly identified the vehicle was using a centrally-located independently managed (controlled from computers sitting miles away in race stations) system that allowed the racecar to act as a single proprietary unit. The central processing systems regulated the activities of the nitrogen-assist units built into the shock system, allowing the shock itself to be nothing more than a constantly adjusted 4-way valve. The cost of the F1 computer system is astronomical. However, the cost of the actual F1 shock (currently about $10k) is contained in simple materials being constructed into a valve/canister configuration. In NHRA, it would be illegal for a team to run centrally operated computer systems that monitor and adjust shock functions (a form of traction control). So to fit the "gray" area of NHRA, the cost of construction for a batch of shocks, self contained and individually monitored, including R&D, could (and does) run in the range of $100,000 quite easily. Specifically, the cost of having to create multiple versions of the boards and firmware to go with the shocks themselves could increase the cost dramatically, whereas F1 does not have this limitation. The cost of an self-contained dampening system that is individually computerized, is much more expensive than the costs of an F1 shock which is controlled through the ultra expensive central computer system. Not to worry, the NHRA last week outlawed this most recent technology (at least for drag racing) and it will probably be a while before we see a set in TPSA.......LOL

- How about letting a car with a small block engine under 434 cu. in. have a little throttle in a bottle? Say allow them 1 stage of juice and maybe a little weight penalty to give the small blocks a chance to compete. Heck they would be giving up 100 cubic inches to nearly everyone, but I think a properly prepped wedge headed small block could compete, since they can't run the splayed or canted valve heads. Just a thought would love to see SBC's on juice battle it out with the all throttle no bottle BBC's. -- wcs-10, 02/27/07 8:12am

- Sorry about the double post, didn't realize it would do that!!! (NT) -- wcs-10, 02/27/07 8:17am
- I't would probably make for some close competition and exciting racing.....Problem is Tech.. TPSA would have to own the Nitrous plate and jets... You would receive them 1 hour before race time and the jets would have to be sealed in the plate. If the fuel side plugs up who pays for your motor. WAIT A MINUTE am I thinking way to much here. (NT) -- Bam-Bam, 02/27/07 12:07pm
- THATS O.K. -- MR"J", 02/27/07 12:09pm
- Would you really have to be in control of the jets? With just 1 stage the solenoids would really be the limiting factor of how much power that could be added. Just approve only a couple of plate systems (i.e. Speedtech, NOS, ZEX, Wilson) and a couple different solenoid manufacturers and let them go. When car crosses scale verify plate manufacturer and solenoid part #'s and let 'em go. I think that the 1 system would catch the small blocks back up. You don't want to add to many things but this may bring car count up. I think the fans in the seats would appreciate this type of competition if the cars were identified on the windows as BB PRO # or NOS/SB PRO #. Now really how many people that go to the track are there and when someone purges a plume of nitrous in the air, it grabs your attention? Do you think just plate systems or should foggers be addressed? (NT) -- wcs-10, 02/27/07 1:24pm
- You got over half the field battling to just catch the top three or four, why give someone else a weight break and nitrous!!!! (NT) -- I dont think so, 02/27/07 4:24pm
- Exactly, everyone trying to catch up spending $100,000. This associaton started out being a place to run heads-up within a budget, now it isn't that. The cost it takes to compete is so high now, what do you do to get more competitive cars? Keep on upgrading 60-80 thousand dollar cars? (NT) -- wcs-10, 02/27/07 7:34pm
- Not everyone has 60 to 80 thousand dollar cars. I will sell you a 4.85 car, truck and trailer for $100,000. (NT) -- Mr.T, 02/27/07 11:50pm
- How about if the small block w/juice minimum weight was 2300# would that be a relative weight? Not sure if nitrous is answer for small blocks, but would even playing field up. How come the small blocks can't run the splayed valve head design? I know that those head designed motors are expensive, but make very good power. If you can't tell I'm partial to the small blocks. (NT) -- wcs-10, 02/28/07 8:48am
wcs-10, the TPSA rules have remained virtually intact since '01 and major changes aren't likely. Consistant rules provide the stability and credibility to a class that encourages racers to build to a performance level they're comfortable with. Resources vary, of course, and some racers can spend whatever it takes to be competitive right out of the box, while others have to be more methodical. The bottom line is pretty simple: TPSA is not bracket/index racing nor is it structured to run every conceivable combination. The vast majority of members said no to the idea of a performance "cap" last year as it would limit progression and become more of an "index" race. As costs continue to escalate, and new performance levels are reached, that may change, but isn't it interesting that none of the "bottom half" cars responded to your post? In fact, of the 13 responses, 7 were made by yourself or other non members, 4 members supported the status quo, 1 member expressed concern about the $$, (NT) -- and BAM BAM was himself...LOL.Personally, I'd rather run wide open, first to the finish line wins, at the back of the pack in TPSA than return to NHRA, IHRA, brackets, or indexes. It's just more FUN to me, win or lose, than the other options. See ya in the lanes.......DH, 02/28/07 10:12pm
- Okay, so I posted 7 responses and was trying to just see about the small block thing. Since I don't count because I ain't a member, perhaps you would like to know that I will be in a TPSA car this year. Not being pissy just maybe others opionions should count sometimes. (NT) -- wcs-10, 02/28/07 10:41pm
Perhaps you missed the point of my reply. While opinions and suggestions are always welcome, the Members viewpoint is the first priority. Before any major rule changes, such as NOS, blowers, lenco's, five speeds, spread port heads, roadsters, dragsters, funny cars, etc. (don't laugh...they've all been suggested at one time or another by someone), the majority of the Members would have to agree and the intent, and spirit of the original rules considered. Also, the "steering committee" would have to be in agreement. You can see how allowing every combination out there isn't feasible or possible. It's not intended to alienate anyone, it's just the facts. Whoever you're going to drive for built their combo to our rules (probably over a period of time) and I'm guessing they wouldn't have been overjoyed to see rule revisions at every turn during the process. The stability of the rules was probably part of the decision your car owner made to join TPSA. We do this for the FUN!! (NT) -- Feel free to contact me anytime if you have questions or need further info......DH, 03/ 1/07 12:23am
- Thanks DH that is actually the reason for coming to the TPSA this year to get away from people or classes that change every other event which ends up coast WAYY TOOOO much just to stay compepitive (NT) -- Dreamweaver, 03/ 2/07 11:23am
- SBC, I have found a head that flows 450 cfm! Here is the web add. www.mbellc.com phone # 704-662-7901 I personally think a head flowing 450 CFM on a SBC would run real close to the big boys but your still going to have to have a good car. My old heads flowed around 415 and the motor made 923 Hp and at 2320 I ran a few 490s to 500s. I think if a guy just had to run a baby motor and I don’t think that’s the smart thing to do we are talking 50K motor here. I think you should be able to run high 470s only thing is when the heat comes the small bore will kill it. THIS IS A BIG BLOCK CLASS. (NT) -- Salsberry, 03/ 2/07 6:44pm
- Heard Don Holcomb got himself some of those new Magneto-rheological- responsive Shocks for the back of his race car. They are supposed to detect tire shake before it happens and compensate real time as the car leaves the line. No more tire shake perfect launch every time... Must be nice!!! -- Hi -Tech, 03/ 1/07 4:53pm
