rumor has it...... -- race fan, 08/15/07 11:09pm
Actually this is not a rumor. An old school comp racer will reappear driving the "Black Diamond". Late model camaro with an updated Bickel chassis and Reher Morrison power. Possible Pinevalley debut. Car is past NHRA national event winning history. Ready to go head to with
his Pigman and Owtell.

Spyshots just it. It's black, it's a Bickel, (is it a Camaro?), and don't know if the driver ever ran comp. Name on the window might be a clue, and that looks like an HE&B engine.

***Only head castings/part numbers that were available for sale to the general public prior to September 1, 2007 will be legal for TPSA competition.
***55mm maximum camshaft barrel/diameter.
***Any sheetmetal used on an intake manifold will carry the 50# weight adjustment.
***The LSX series of SBC components will not be legal for TPSA competition.

- #'S #'S #'S -- TROUBLE MAKER, 08/21/07 10:28am
How about all cars weighing 2400#'s minimum regardless of engine size? All other weight penalties stay in effect. What do you think?
[ Post a Reply to this Message ][Edit]
Replies:
- Why ? Because the "Little" motors are running away from everyone ? (NT) -- Size Matters !!, 08/21/07 12:07pm
- Weight breaks, 2400# minimum accomplishes what??? (NT) -- Pigman, 08/21/07 2:58pm
- No need to change, Pigman has the little combo at 2350, Otwell has the 565 at 2400 - separated by thousandths in ET. (NT) -- Current rules have been proven, 08/21/07 10:19pm
- You cant slow down the Pig. He will just build a bigger motor and kick yalls but. (NT) -- #1 Pig Fan, 08/21/07 11:43pm
- Mr. Pigford, 2400#'s is an arbitrary weight. If you HAD to choose one weight as a minimum w/o a break, what would it be?? NHRA had multiple weights in the 70's but ultimately concluded one weight and a maximum CID would create a more even field and enhance competition. Did it work?? (NT) -- TROUBLEMAKER, 08/22/07 9:52am
- Since we are just pretending, I vote 2350 minimum weight with 572 max inches, with one carb only. (NT) -- Mr.T, 08/22/07 11:19am
- I thought the objective here was to give a lot of different combinations a place to race heads-up. Going to one Min. Wt. and one Max. Cu. In. will eventually tighten the field but it would more than likely immediately reduce car count and probably put some of our guys out of business all together. The fastest car out there right now (R.O.) is 565/2400. On paper the 585/2450 is a better wt. / cu. in. but I don't know of anyone whose had any real success with a deal like that. Bottom line for me ,I don't think it's broke so it don't need fixin'!!! (NT) -- Pigman, 08/22/07 1:26pm
- If Mr.Troublemaker was intending to bring paridy to the group by adding weight, well how about this instead. We seal the motor mount bolts, heads to block and oil pan bolts. This would allow spring, rocker and lifter type changes only. This way those high dollar, pull them out every week and rebuild em motors would not have an advantage. Whats your thoughts? -- Must finish the year with what you started with., 08/21/07 11:39pm

Houston Motorsports Park August 11th
-- ., 08/14/07 5:08pm
Samantha kept the drawing fair and impartial

Gary Winscott premiered his awesome GTO. A broken tranny would end his day before 1st round.

TPSA in the house and filling the lanes

The "Boxman" was back, but a broken intake rocker kept him from eliminations.

DH made it past 1st round and into the semi's.

Ben Worley heats 'em up

Rick Cowger, in Derryl Wood's Camaro, prepares for another hit

NOTES FROM THE PITS:
12 TPSA teams braved the south Texas heat and humidity to see who would have bragging rights. Mr. T was working, Rick Hanson was in Sturgis, Crownover's got a deposit on the S-10, Rigmaiden, Pearce, Dorsett, and Williams are still down, and Donalson isn't quite ready. The staff @ HMP had the track in excellent condition even with the 140* track temp. Pigford and Otwell continued to lead the class with mid .70's, and Lee Staiger, with his new heads/manifold combination posted a 4.80. Both Lump, driving Winscott's fabulous new GTO, and Donald, the "Boxman" Hughes, would break during time trials and were unable to compete in eliminations.
Lee Staiger and Richard Otwell had the closest race of the day in the 2nd round. Lee's .456rt and 4.809 et fell to Otwell's .495rt, 4.762 et by just .004! With 5 races remaining, the "General" still has time to shake up the points standings.
Pigford posted the best rt of the day in the semi's against DH. Pig's .4020rt also moved him into the lead of the Lidiak Motorsports, "Treeman Challenge".
The final between Otwell and Pigford should have been a classic. Otwell's 4.74 @ 147.78 was the best of the event, but the "Pigman" wasn't far behind, and had shown he could get on the tree. The stagemaster gave the "fire 'em up sign" and Pigford did his burnout, backed up, and was doing his final preparations. Otwell's Cavalier never fired and there was a throng of folks trying to get the thing started. Pigford was advised of his options, and in a display of sportsmanship that is the TPSA, shut the Grand Am off to give Richard a few more minutes. The Cavalier still refused to lite, and after the Starter's command to fire it up, Pigford staged and soloed into the Winner's Circle for his third victory of the year. Otwell's ride was towed back to the pits where the culprit was diagnosed as a bad battery.
The points page and results page have been updated. Thanks to everyone for your support of the TPSA!

- Reher Morrison suffers a great loss.... -- FYI, 08/14/07 10:18pm
While surfing found this article:
On August 13th 2007 I resigned my position as Cylinder Head Department Manager for Reher Morrison Racing Engines.
I will stay on for the next couple of weeks in order to finish development of the last couple prototypes. Then, I am off to NASCAR! Sometimes opportunities come along that you just cant pass up. It seems that just such an opportunity has been presented to me. I will be taking over the cylinder head department for Furniture Row Racing in Denver Colorado. I will be managing the cylinder head department and all related research and development efforts in that area. We will be working hard to find more power. The new R07 engine is an absolutely awesome engine design and I truly feel that it will surpass the SB2 in a matter of months. The power potential of this engine design is well above what the SB2 can achieve. Having to develop only one engine combination will be a shock to my system for a couple of months. I usually have five or more head or manifold projects being juggled at any one time. I now get to concentrate on one thing and one thing only. As many of you know, I have had very good success in the past developing heads and intake manifolds for various Nextel Cup teams and this is my chance to do it full time. Furniture Row is a growing team and I look forward to growing with them. I believe in this team. I believe in there vision and goals for the future and I am excited to be a part of it!
On another note:
Its been a fun ride the last ten years working for Reher Morrison. I have absolutely loved my job there and as a team we have accomplished a lot. Its a good place to work, learn and build some of the fastest racing engines in the country. Its been a great ten years and I look back on my time at Reher Morrison as one the greatest times in my life. I could tell a great many stories about working here at Reher Morrison and they would ALL be on a positive note. I have to say that the attention to detail and the quality of the engines produced by this facility are absolutely, unequivocally second to none. David Reher and Bruce Allen are also the most ethical businessmen I have ever met in the racing industry and I will always have the highest respect for them. We have been friends for many years and that will not change.

Saturday @ HMP -- Pigman, 08/13/07 4:39pm
There's an 'ole saying that goes "even a blind hog finds an acorn ever now and then". Well I guess Saturday nite was this "'ole hog's" turn at the acorns. Who'd have ever thought that Richard's car would refuse to crank for the final??? Just ain't suppose to happen, RIGHT ??? Well it did and the 'ole Pigman gets a solo for the dough. I'll take it 'cause I've always said I'd rather be lucky than good anytime, but I've got to admit it's a little bit of a hollow victory. R.O. had been .02 or .03 quicker than we had been all nite so for us to win I had to leave on him by at least .03. I was ready, but I'm pretty sure Richard was ready too so we'll just have to save it for another race. Anyway, I want to thank "Animal Jack" and "The Merv" for the great crew work and all the folks at HMP for hosting the race and having the track in such great shape. See ya'll at the next one---(OINK OINK,think I'll go gnaw on this acorn.) Oh, by the way D.H., I'll have that Coke bottle ready for your autograph next time I see 'ya. Long Live TPSA!!!!!

Just got in from the airport. Thanks to the "ghost writer" below for catching my slack on the pre race report. I'll try to figure out who you are tomorrow!.
Conrad left me a voice mail saying he'd be at the track tonite, and I'm sure a couple of others are out there as well. Since we were on the plane all day, I didn't get a chance to talk to anyone. I'd give 'em a ring now, but they're probably already cutting zzzzzzzzzzz's. Gonna try to catch a few winks myself before we head out in the am. The race flyer is posted above if you have any questions regarding what time the gates open, etc and by now you all know the drill. See you guys tomorrow...sounds like it's gonna be a hot one. -- DH, 08/11/07 12:49am

- Who Will Be The King This Weekend ??? -- All Motor Racing, 08/10/07 12:44pm
Place your bets... Place your bets ! Who will be the Top Dog for the TPSA this weekend at HMP ? Can Pigford be bumped from his #1 points spot ? Will Otwell run both cars, or is the Yellow one now in Top Sportsman trim ? Can Winscott/Lump get the GTO ironed out ? Will those Hubbard boys bring something to deal with ? Has "The Dude" found more power and ready to show it? Will Mr. T have his ride ready ? Will Pearce have the "long horn" cavalier haulin' the hay or will they "Gig-Em" ? Will Hanson's consistency earn another final round appearance ? Heard that Worley and Staiger had some decent 60fts on Wed night... Can they be the spoilers ? Will Naylor be a player with the Schmidt power plant ? These questions and many more will be answered Saturday night !!

- After having another argument over dalay boxes (do they help or hurt) a driver, It was proposed that we try an INSTANT GREEN. This is not a rule change nor even an official vote but will you please post your opinion. Would you like to race with an INSTANT GREEN with AUTO START or allow delay boxes and leave on a .400 tree? -- Just Wandering, 07/26/07 1:47am

- no way -- crew man, 07/26/07 8:11am
- FYI, "real" Pro Stock (NHRA) uses autostart, but the casual racer/fan can't be expected to understand it when the some of the pro's don't get it after all these years. Any beginner "super" catagory racer can describe the intricate workings of the autostart system in detail, yet Greg Anderson, of all people, didn't know how it worked until he was timed out against EE. If you want to see which team has the quickest chassis set up/driver combo, relative to RT, go to instant green. Be careful what you wish for however, because those same folks that don't understand how autostart and delay boxes work have no idea how quickly some combinations can react (rt). RT advantage is the cheapest hp available. If you want to eliminate delay boxes, then go to instant green or a .300 pro tree so the driver that has honed his reaction skills isn't penalized. Just be prepared for the results. (NT) -- .035 in the "box", 07/26/07 3:03pm

- fyi -- in real p/s they dont red light you for deep staging the is a differenc in the systems, 07/26/07 7:24pm
- The autostart parameters must be selected. Pro or full tree, deep stage on/off, burn down time, time from amber to green (,400 .500, instant green, etc), guard beam on/off, stage to start time, minimum stage time, and others. When the parameters are determined, they're entered into the computer, and it's done. (NT) -- ., 07/27/07 11:52am
- com'on no delay boxes or throttle stops gess isn't this why we run this class If you want to run one GO RUN TOP SPORTSMAN CLASS my .02 cents (NT) -- Dreamweaver, 07/26/07 10:01pm
- thats missing the whole point electronics will intergrate thier way into our cars via msd data recorders etc ,but lets keep as much in the drivers hands as we can I think any car in TPSA will go red if you leave on the first flash of yellow so a delay boxes could effect a drivers rt's LETS KEEP IT A HORSEPOWER WAR NOT AN ELECTRONIC WAR (NT) -- Dreamweaver, 07/27/07 8:15am
You guys KNEW I couldn't leave this alone!......CAUTION....long dissertation/epistle follows...click here at your own risk.(LOL) -- DH, 07/27/07 2:23pm
- love it or hate it, elctronics or here to stay. Rev limiters, electric shocks, digital ignitions, trans brakes, data recorders, digital nitrous timers (a throttle stop in my book), all are intregal to todays drag racing. (NT) -- only way to escape all electronics is no-box, no-e, no adders, foot brake racing, 07/27/07 2:43pm
- Delay Box -- Small Block Guy, 07/28/07 1:52am
- All electronic devices in todays drag cars with the exception of the delay box, are used to improve the cars performance. The delay box is used specifically to enhance the drivers performance on the starting line. Most of todays competitive drivers are quite capable of going red at will. A delay box in the hands of a savy driver is a very usefull TOOL. Take the delay box out and now the same driver will go red if he or she leaves at the same point on the tree. This does nothing to improve a slower reacting driver but will cause the quicker driver to have to adjust something to keep from going red. NOW he or she can use any number of the other methods already in the car, launch chip, timing, shock settings, four link, adjustable trans brake button, etc. and the list goes on. These methods are not as simple as rolling numbers in or out of the box but you will not keep a good driver / race car from achieving the .000 for long. (NT) -- .030 in the box, 07/30/07 3:14pm
- ok been on vacation so THATS WHY MY MOUTH WAS SHUT, I don't have a problem running a box I have one and can wire my car to take it in-n-out My vote is to have instant green with no boxes HELL for that matter I like the .400 light with no boxes and make people tune the rest of the car for (car rt's) adjustments I might be a young gun(40yrs old) in the class, but as DH brought up the old ways of lights I also grew up with those maners (via my dad) I DON'T WHAT MORE TO SAY which ever way everyone wants I will make the adjustments to play ball (NT) -- Dreamweaver, 07/31/07 7:25pm
- One race, all 000's in the box, .400 pro tree. This should cause some serious red lights, thus causing adjustments to prevent the red light, which means slowing the cars reaction down since the driver won't be consistant trying to react later. Then the slower car reaction will result in slower 60' and overall ET. If you can't hit the tree with both hands anyway this will make no difference. Want to try it?? (NT) -- .030 in the box, 08/ 2/07 9:02am
- do this DH. the driver's that can't redlite want to bring the class down to their level, make the tree .500 pro. That way everyone has to slow rt's down. The one's that have figured out how to get a lite by working on the car will still have the edge and those tthat were too lazy will have to work on it jsut to go green. - HMP's Statement Of Facts Regarding September Race -- Graham & David Baker, 07/16/07 3:41pm
This release is to dispel all rumors and untrue statements circulating regarding the September race that has been postponed at HMP by John Huettel until spring. HMP was approached by John Huettel in early March requesting a date to hold a two day, September event. HMP is extremely grateful for all of Johns support and did not hesitate to give him the September 7th & 8th date. John indicated he would like to put together a large event featuring Outlaw 10.5 and True 10.5. HMP already had a KOTH race scheduled for September 8th. KOTH President, Matt Jones, was contacted and asked if KOTH would mind racing for more purse for a big event over two days. Matt agreed. At the time John requested the date, HMP was informed that John had some people working on sponsorship to cover the large purse. It was not discussed who these people were. It was understood by HMP that John Huettel would be hosting the event and HMP would support by promoting the event through HMP established media and would be in control of drag strip operations.
In June, HMP learned that Bonnie Webb was involved in the event. Because of the past difficulties, strained relationships, and financial consequences with HMPs suppliers and sponsors caused by Bonnie Webbs aggressive and often abrasive approach, HMP owners, Graham and David Baker became very concerned. Graham visited with John and expressed these concerns.
Those concerns were solidified once again in late June when two of HMPs suppliers called complaining of her abrasiveness on the phone. It was decided by HMP that all future contacts with any of HMPs suppliers or sponsors should be handled through HMP and not direct with Bonnie. This way all existing relationships, developed processes and generally established ways of doing business would be maintained.
HMPs Graham Baker, Dean Baker and John Mandabach were invited to a meeting with John & Kyle Huettel, Bonnie Webb and Tracie Kmiec to discuss the event. HMP decided it would be best to discuss HMP concerns regarding HMPs suppliers and sponsors at the meeting. Upon requesting that any future needs by the group with any current sponsors or suppliers of HMP be handled by HMP to ensure that existing business relationship are maintained, HMP was told by Bonnie that she would contact whoever she liked because it was her race. HMP attempted to explain the difficulties in that approach and provided several examples where sponsor and supplier relationships have been damaged to the point of financial expense for HMP. John Huettel agreed that it would be best that any needs of the group with any of HMPs suppliers or sponsors would go through HMP and the meeting continued.
Also at the meeting, all attendees were given a folder by Bonnie that outlined the event and the total purse which according to HMP calculations was $80,000. This was the first time that HMP had been provided such information. After the meeting, Graham Baker, Dean Baker and John Mandabach were invited back to John Huettels home to view his car collection and workshop. This was an extremely enjoyable visit.
Early next morning, Graham Baker received a phone call from John Huettel indicating that he would like to postpone the event. He indicated that at the meeting was the first time he had been presented with the total purse. He indicated that after putting pen to paper he was very concerned about guaranteeing this large amount of purse and that he felt it best to postpone the event until spring. Graham inquired if it had anything to do with the previous nights meeting and was assured that it was purely a financial decision and that the race would be rescheduled for the spring 2008. Later the same day, Kyle Huettel informed HMP that Bonnie had called and asked if his father and he would be offended if she was to promote the same race at a different track.
Since then, many have approached HMP and discussed the rumors and untrue statements that most claim to have heard straight from Bonnie. The above statement is the facts of what occurred. HMP owners, Graham and David Baker think that Bonnie Webbs business practices and actions have demonstrated to be abrasive, deceitful, and dishonest.
HMP would be remiss without saying that everyone at HMP has the utmost respect, admiration and loyalty to John Huettel and Northside Plumbing and Supply. We know that because of his financial support in the construction of the drag strip and Northside Plumbing and Supplys sponsorship of events, the drag strip is a higher quality and more enjoyable facility. HMP looks forward to supporting John Huettels rescheduled event at HMP in the spring and will continue to do everything within its power to ensure its success.
HMP has strived to build a reputation as a fun and enjoyable venue that offers some of the quickest and fastest heads up racing the USA has to offer. We will continue to pursue that goal and hope that you, our HMP family, will continue to support us. Stay tuned for exciting announcements regarding future events.
Kindest Regards,
Graham and David Baker
PS. HMP will run the Maximum Impact, Outlaw 10.5, KOTH points race originally scheduled for September 8th. This includes the S&S Racing Index classes as well.

Hanson Motorsports thanks David Hubbard for his tireless efforts in the TPSA. We have a place to race with a definitive schedule. We have a purse at these races. We have trophy's or plaques at the races for the winner and runner up. All of these are negotiated, procured and delivered by David. Hanson Motorsports, and I know all of the other teams of the TPSA appreciate your efforts.
A huge vote of appreciation goes out to Kay Hubbard who has the dubious distinction of collecting all our money, keeping the run order in the lanes, and always has the winnings neatly packaged at the end of the race. Thanks for what you do!!
Also a thanks to Richard Ottwell for sending an ASSASSIN to Pine Valley. What a guy!!!!

Thanks for the kudos. We certainly don't do it all ourselves and it takes everyone's help to make this thing fly. Dictators Rick Hanson, and Donald Hughes, as well as all of the members, provide input through their experience and contacts for matters ranging from policy making to rule changes and help provide a direction for the future of the TPSA. More importantly, without the Sponsors, participating Race Tracks, fans, and racers/members support, it couldn't happen at all. Also, a huge thanks to Gene & Tommy Platt, who have donated hundreds of hours of their time over the past few years to man the scales and help wherever the need arose. ***Race #6 report from Pine Valley Raceway*** -- ., 07/ 3/07 12:27am
The TPSA rolled into Lufkin for PVR's first race of the 2007 "No Excuses Tour". The weather seems to always be the same @ Pine Valley...blue skies early on changing to dark, ominous rain clouds that usually skirt the top end of the track, sometimes accompanied by a brief rain shower. That's what the racers and fans got on this day and the cooler temps and tighter track conditions were welcomed by all.
Qualifying saw 13 teams make the call with one new face in the mix. With the boss on vacation in Alaska, AJ Ashe was picked to shoe the Cavalier for Richard Otwell's crew. Going into eliminations, AJ led the pack with a 4.763, with Joe Pigford's 4.797 close behind.
1st round action would feature 80* temp, just about equal humidity, and low barometer making for typical DA readings for this time of year. It would have been much worse if not for the shower earlier in the day. The first pair drawn, and #1 & #2 qualifiers were Ashe and Pigford. The cars were equally matched and the crews had done their job and it resulted in one of the best races of the year. AJ, showing the advantage of years on the high dollar bracket racing scene, was out with a .408 rt...but Pigford's Grand Am was right there with a .431 of his own. Both cars straight as a string, the scoreboards lit up with 4.79's on each side, and the win lite on in AJ's lane. The second pair had Rick Hanson in the black 'Vette alongside Rick Cowger in Derryl Wood's Camaro. Cowger posted the best rt of eliminations, a .4027, but couldn't hold off Hanson's 4.93 @140.10. Cowger did take the lead in the Lidiak Motorsports "Treeman Challenge" with his stellar rt. Next up had two of the "ol' guys", Eddie Conrad vs David Hubbard. DH's .410 initiated 4.929 @ 141.64 fell by a margin of .0018 to the "Dude's", .441rt, 4.896 @ 140.85. Eddie took over the lead of the Lidiak Motorsports "At the stripe Challenge", previously held by DH. This was the first race back for the "Boxman", Donald Hughes, and in the other lane was Ben Worley's Grand Am. Ben's handling gremlins are still giving him fits, and Hughes would advance with a 4.921 @ 142.09 when Ben had to lift. Lee Staiger and Randy Elliott both were on the tree with .409rt's but Lee's 4.902 @ 140.85 moved him into round two. Clint Crownover's S-10 lined up beside Jim Naylor's Cavalier and advanced when Naylor had to shut it off after staging. Larry Pearce, with the UT Cavalier, drew the bye and posted a 4.941 @ 141.29.
2nd round had the Hanson's moving on when Pearce's ride shut off early, Conrad sent Crownover back to the trailer, and Ashe automatically went to the semi's when the "Boxman" left the red bulb hangin' on the tree. Staiger finished out the round with a 4.863 @ 142.50.
Semi Final action would pit Hanson against Staiger, with Hanson getting the win over Lee when the Camaro's bullet bent a pushrod, and AJ used a 4.763 to stop Conrad's 4.88.
Rick Hanson moved first in the final, but the Team Otwell Cavalier would come steaming past with a 4.765, to send AJ Ashe to the winner's circle in his first TPSA race.
This was the first race for the TPSA @ Pine Valley Raceway this year and the track was in excellent condition from the early morning tnt to the final round. Billy Kestner, the Bailey family, the girls in the tower, and the entire staff did a terrific job on the track prep and keeping the schedule on track, even with the rain delays. We appreciate being part of Pine Valley Raceway's program, and the great fans that come out....especially "redneck row".
Thanks to Gene & Tommy Platt for their usual fine job on the scales, and to all of the teams and fans that took part in a super race @ PVR. See ya back there in September!

***Pine Valley Raceway tomorrow, June 30th*** -- DH, 06/29/07 11:51am
The TPSA heads to Lufkin this Saturday, June 30th, for the sixth race of the 2007 No Excuses Tour! Gates open at 2pm with open time trials scheduled to start around 3pm and our qualifying passes around 4 & 5pm. First round is scheduled for 7pm and we'll have about 1 hour between rounds. Looks like the weather is gonna co-operate with temps near 90* and the standard humidity for this time of year. Overnite parking is allowed for TPSA members and don't forget the tnt from 9 to 1 Sat am. The cost is $100 per car.
As a reminder, your TPSA entry is good for the car and driver and two crew. Any additional crewmembers will pay the track gate fee. Be sure to tell 'em at the gate you're with TPSA and give them your name. My trailer (green & white motorhome w/white stacker) serves as race control. You must come by my trailer and get your tech card and TPSA entry. Without a tech card you cannot get your credentials.
If you want to be part of the round drawings/pairings just come by the trailer about 30 minutes before the round. We usually pick someone from the crowd to draw names and the round pairings will posted at my trailer.
We will weigh the winners after each round of eliminations and the scales will be available during TT's so you can check your weight. If you have around of any questions just come by the trailer.
Looking forward to seeing all of you there, and some great racing at the PVR. I'll be @ the track Friday so call my cell if you have any questions.

I am sure yall all have heard about the accident where the pro mod that Troy Critchley was driving while doing a exhibition burnout went out of control and killed 6 people and injured several others. Well I was wondering what I could do to help and I came up with this idea. I had Justin Spencer of www.competitiondesigns.com donate his time to make the design I had in mind. I had Frank Tamaz owner of Auto Max USA and title sponsor of the NHRA Division 6 Top Sportsman Series donate the money to have the decals made. We having 15000 of them made. All of the money generated by this will be donated to the Cars for Kids Victims fund. I have contacted Larry Price from Cars for Kids and have it all set up with him. Now I need your help to spread the word. I will let you know when I receive the decals but here is what they will look like. We haven't quite decided on a price yet but have some ideas. Let me know what you think I was wanting to make the decals smaller than the soldier ones we see everywhere so they could be put on a racecar. Thanks to everyone who helped on this I just had an idea and told a few people about it and next thing ya know I am in the decal selling business. (one day I will learn to keep my mouth shut LOL) Thanks Jeff Benham

Rule updates for '08 and beyond..... -- DH, 06/22/07 11:42pm
It's raining, the board's quiet, and we have a few days before our next event @ Pine Valley Raceway on June 30th, so it's a good opportunity to bring you up to speed on what we've been working on.
As you know, we have been researching and asking for input on rule revisions, updates, or clarifications for the ‘08 season and beyond for the past several months. As evidenced by the unrest in some of the other organizations caused by seemingly uncontrollable escalating costs, it becomes obvious that stable, consistent rules are paramount for the success and long term viability of an organization such as ours.
The cylinder head, intake manifold, and camshaft issues have been the main topic of discussion over the past few months. The Dictators have conducted many hours of research with engine builders, head porters, manufacturers, and other racing groups, in an effort to insure competitiveness without being forced to purchase the “trick of the week“ to stay competitive. The original intention was to move toward a “Spec” head at a very competitive price that would offer all of the teams the same hp potential as the current front runners. This program progressed along very nicely for about 6 months, until it was ultimately killed at the last moment by the head manufacturer. They decided that an 18* conventional casting was more profitable than a 22* one. Initially, we were very disappointed and interviewed other head/engine builders about producing a “Spec” head but could not achieve the package of performance/cost we were looking for. After some time passed and more research, it became apparent that a “Spec” head was not the answer as it would eliminate choices the individual owner had as far as developing his unique engine combination with the engine builder/head porter of his choice. At this time, the top four teams use different heads and engine builders and it’s important to retain the diversity, creativity, and spirit that the original rules were based on.
Considering the R&D, technology, and the number of new castings produced for the BBC conventional head in the past few years, the consensus was to somehow limit the investment required to achieve, and maintain, a competitive performance level. The hp that is available out of the box now is astounding compared to what was available just a couple of years ago. This year, several teams have demonstrated the performance potential of the heads that are currently available. Considering all of the facts with an eye toward the future and further development of the class, the best solution appears to be a moratorium on new head technology. Simply stated, any currently available head that is legal for TPSA competition, with TPSA legal modifications under the present rules will be allowed. The cut off date for new castings or part numbers will be September 1, 2007. This will allow those competitors who are building new combinations or updating to finalize their plans for next season.
The SEMA show (Oct 30) and the PRI show (Dec 6th) typically are where new products are released and the cut off date will be prior to these shows. In other words, if Dart, Brodix, BMF, etc. release a new part number or casting after September 1, 2007, including at any trade show, it will not be legal for TPSA competition.
Additional rule updates will include the cam barrel diameter being limited to a maximum of 55mm, and the use of sheet metal on any intake manifold will result in a 50# weight adjustment being assessed. To recap the updates:
***Only head castings/part numbers that were available for sale to the general public prior to September 1, 2007 will be legal for TPSA competition.
***55mm maximum camshaft barrel/diameter.
***Any sheetmetal used on an intake manifold will carry the 50# weight adjustment.
***The LSX series of SBC components will not be legal for TPSA competition.
Look these proposals over, talk to your head and engine builder and get his opinion. Odds are we have already contacted him and every one that was contacted agreed this is a viable plan for the future of the TPSA. In fact, the original idea came from a discussion with a very prominent engine builder who was adamant about cost control and limiting technology to reasonable levels if the class were to survive and prosper. Somewhat surprising and candid views coming from an individual that makes his living from developing new products and R&D.
If your present combination has a cam larger than 55mm please contact me ASAP. We have tried to contact every team and to our knowledge no one is currently using the larger barrel cams. As always your comments and opinions are invited and welcome....post, email, or call. Thanks.

***Race #5 report from Houston Motorsports Park***

-- pit pundit
, 06/12/07 1:04pm
Beautiful blue skies, with the typical Houston heat and humidity, were the order of the day for round 5 of the TPSA 2007 NO EXCUSES Tour held at Houston Motorsports Park.
The entry list would not include Donald Hughes who is still waiting on some parts, the Winscott's new GTO which is SO close but just not quite ready for it's debut, AD Rigmaiden's repairing some body damage, and new guy RJ Dorsett's '57 Chevy gettin' some chassis updates. Fifteen teams were on hand and included newcomers Tommy Angelle's '02 Camaro and Wayne Emmott's Skyhawk. Somewhere in the crowd you could hear Dave Donalson sigh...he wanted to bring the first "H" body ride to a TPSA event (his Vega) but Emmott's clean, red Buick beat him to the punch.
The rest of the field consisted of Conrad, Cowger, Crownover, Elliott, Hanson, A Hubbard, D Hubbard, Naylor, Otwell, Pearce, Pigford, Staiger, and Worley. Before the first TT, while warming the engine up on the projacks, Pearce discovered a problem that would prevent him from racing on this day. That left 14 teams to slug it out under the blazing sun and high humidity.
First round weather stats: 84.6*, 73%, VP 875...Eddie Conrad and Tommy Angelle were first up, and the "Dude" posted a 4.95 @ 138.72 to end Angelle's TPSA debut. Tommy said he had a great time and would make more events, and hinted more power might be in the works for down the road. A. Hubbard drew Ben Worley and advanced in a close race. Lee Staiger, who has made major progress lately, faced the Rick Cowger/Derryl Wood's team in the next pair. The Cowger/Wood's team had just purchased Don Holcomb's old bullet but had not had time for any testing. Holcomb was on hand for morale support and technical advice but the "General's" 4.85 @ 142.81 put Lee into the next round. Next up would bring the "Green Mamba" of Joe Pigford against the 3 time series champ, David Hubbard. DH's been struggling this year, and with Pigford's clear performance advantage word was DH would be trying to mow the 'tree down. Sure 'nuff, DH cut the tree a lil' too close (.393) which sent the current points leader, Pigford on to round two. Jim Naylor drew the other new car of Wayne Emmott, and used a 4.85 @ 141.91 to end Wayne's day. Wayne also had a great time and said he'd be back for more. Richard Otwell's 4.79 @146.10 would prove to be the #1 ET % MPH for the round and sent Clint Crownover's S-10 back to the trailer. A battle of 'Vette's closed 1st round action, and Rick Hanson's 5.02 ended Randy Elliott's day.
Round two found Otwell notching another round win over A. Hubbard, and when Pigford had trouble staging, Hanson automatically advanced. A redlite also ended Staiger's chances and sent Conrad to the semi's. Jim Naylor drew the bye and showed his intentions with the round low 4.84.
The semi's featured some great matchups and close racing. Richard Otwell would continue his march to the final with an event best ET & MPH (4.76 @ 147.01) victory over Naylor's 4.83 @ 144.09. Conrad would move into the final with a 4.93 shot to stop Hanson's 4.97.
The final had all of the ingredients for drama. Both Conrad and Otwell had been in the finals this year, but had to settle as Runner Up. The outcome was decided when Conrad rolled through the beams, sending Otwell and crew to the Winners' Circle. The word is that in 16 years of racing, Richard had never won a race as a driver. He has enjoyed success as a car owner and partner, but had never tasted victory as a driver. Congratulations to Richard and his crew, Naiser Racing Engines, and Rutland Transmissions for a fine effort. Congrats also to the Conrad Racing crew for their second runner up finish of the year.
Thanks to the Baker family, John Mandabach, and the staff @ HMP for the hospitality and allowing the TPSA to be a part of their program. Thanks to all of the racers and crew that braved the Texas heat and to Tommy Angelle and Wayne Emmott for their participation in the TPSA.
Five races, four different winners, four different runners-up. Next up, we return to Pine Valley Raceway in Lufkin, Texas on June 30th. Make your plans now to be there.

I have a tech question for the TPSA Crew Chiefs. I 've got a 2350lb bracket car that runs 4.90's w/a 4.10 gear and will 60' 1.10 . I leave @ 4,3k with a 5,8k converter and 17x33's. My question is what improvment on short times and over all ET should I expect if i were to go to a 4.30 rear gear? I want to know if making the change would be worth it. Thanks guys for any info. WOW!! -- DH, 05/30/07 6:03pm
Not that it affects any of us directly but NHRA has finally confirmed what many in the financial world have been talking about for weeks. The NHRA PROFESSIONAL RACING assets, NHRA tracks, building in Glendora, Powerade series, etc. have been sold to a holding group that was formed by the founder of DIRECTV. Sportsman racing will still be administered by the non profit NHRA and presumably will be little changed.
Most of the current management team will stay on either as officers of the new NHRA PRO Racing or as board members. It's interesting to note that part of the 121 million dollar purchase price is 100 million in cash! As NHRA has been a non profit organization for the benefit of it's members, I'm sure we'll (NHRA members) get our cut.
I waited to post this until it was on the NHRA.com site which was just happened. You can review details of the transaction on any business or financial website.
Let the speculation begin.....

Ok I don't wanna make a fuss ,but we dont seem to have a bore spacing limit for sm blk on the rules page
this is the bottom line question ... the LSX block will have a 4.40 bore spacing allowing a 4.250 bore and a 4.500 stroke now if I remenber correctly thats a 500 c.i. engine (ganted its a pretty sorry combo) (its still a 500 c.i. engine with a huge weight break)(I know summer heat etc)(I know I'm almost finished with my bg blk)(I know the rpm will be limited with those numbers)(I understand all these conditions and I apoligze for the () ,but just I'm just thinking out loud)
so.... if someone is able to make a 980 hp 2200 lbs car at a lower rpm ....hmmmm....
I have been putting alot of dollars in my car to come run with you guys and would hate to lose out to a new engine combo that blows us all out of the water I can't t this afford to change directions at this point nor do our old parts lend themselves to the swap meet crowd
I just worried about not nipping this bud in the bullocks now. I think it really needs to address NOW before someone goes spends a large dollar amount on one of these combo's and blacken our eye ....this is for the whole TPSA
I understand everyone is very busy with day to day life ,but PLEASE make a stand on this rule before it becomes a problem ...I don't think any of us want to get in the small cubic inch war or should I say the sml blk with large c.i. war OK OK maybe some people can afford those games ,but as we lose car count (lately) (and as people complain about the money involed in the class now) YES I UNDERSTNAD ITS A HEADS UP CLASS AND THAT WILL ALWAYS INVOLE BIG MONEY
Bottom line I am just trying to address this sisuation before we have a problem not to mention that guy who keeps making the sm blk post having his day
Now to answer the rumors around my sisuation I will be mounting the block and heades this weekend so we can build new headers once that is finished I'll take the parts back over to fearman's to build the engine myself with his oversite ...then dropping it on the dyno for finally tuning
I still have some chassis setup, electrical, and some extra's to make us a little more compepitive (ALL LEGAL)
at this point in the season I look at this season in only a test and tune exercise (and maybe we can be a spoiler in a few races)I know we still have alot to do,but hey it didn't just happen overnite getting to here
Thanks everyone for giving me the time of day WE WILL BE OUT PLAYING BEFORE TOO LONG
PLEASE ADDRESS THE SML BLK PROBLEM NOW BEFORE THIS GETS OUT OF HAND

Just wanted to take a moment and thank the fans at evadale for their hospitality during the Texas Pro Stock race. We did'nt have the fastest car, got a lucky break when we needed it, and consistently went down the track a little faster each pass. Had a little drama right before the semi round finding what was thought to be a dead hole in the motor and the carb being loose! Thanks to the help from the Conrad crew to get it turned around and to the lanes for the final. There is definatly a low '.80 in the car and with a few more laps I think we'll find it. Also big Thanks to Larry and Jean Peirce for the tools and resources needed to get this car in the winners circle. Mr. Bruce and all the staff at the dale - we can't wait to come back and defend our win for an even bigger crowd!

***Race Report from Ben Bruce Memorial Raceway (Evadale)***
-- pit pundit
, 05/21/07 6:23pm
The TPSA traveling road show began arriving at Ben Bruce Memorial Raceway in Evadale on Friday nite. Fred Irby, the track manager, greeted the early birds and provided a grand tour of the facility. Nestled in among the huge pine trees that are synonymous with east Texas, the 'Dale is a well prepared 1/4 mile track with plenty of shut down area.
With Otwell out of town on business, Hughes waiting on some parts, Winscott's new GTO in the vinyl shop, and Rigmaiden chasing ignition problems, twelve teams would contest this inaugural event @ Ben Bruce. The fourth stop of the "2007 No Excuses Tour" found the teams of Conrad, Cowger, Crownover, Elliott, Hanson, A Hubbard, D Hubbard, Naylor, Pearce, Pigford, Staiger, and Worley ready to get it on for the enthusiastic fans that were in the stands, and on the fence.
Although qualifying would be during the heat of the day, the racers were treated to cooler and drier conditions than what is normal for this time of the year. With a temp of 84*, humidity at 33%, and VP around 700, the cars rolled into the lanes. When the smoke cleared from two rounds of qualifying, it was Joe Pigford's "Green Mamba" leading the pack with a 4.82 @ 145.96.
The first pair out for first round featured a battle of the 'Vette's, as Aaron Hubbard, in Ol' Blue, would advance when Randy Elliott left the red bulb hangin' on the tree. Larry Pearce moved his Cavalier into the next round with a win over Clint Crownover's S-10. The next pair had the #1 Qualifier, Pigford, draw Naylor, who was the #2 Qualifier. Strange how the random pairing works out sometimes! In a great race, Pigford's Grand Am took a close victory over Naylor's Cavalier, 4.791 to a 4.832. This was the low ET for the event. Ben Worley's Grand Am was up next along side the black 'Vette of Rick Hanson. Worley moved on to the next round easily when Rick experienced an electrical gremlin on the starting line. Lee Staiger, the most recent winner on the tour, took out Eddie Conrad's Camaro by a 4.907 to 4.910 count. Lee's great reaction time, a .414, left no doubt as to the outcome of this one. David Hubbard got a free pass to the 2nd round when Rick Cowger, in the Derryl Wood owned Camaro, couldn't make the call.
Round two would provide some surprises as DH advanced over the quicker Camaro of Staiger when Lee was "timed out" at the tree. Aaron Hubbard and Ben Worley treated the fans to a pedalfest worthy of a Funny Car battle with Hubbard's 5.45 prevailing. Fans and racers alike were jammed along the fences to watch the battle between Pearce and Pigford. Pigford had a small performance advantage going in but this is drag racing! It was over when Pigford deep staged and Pearce went into the semi's with a fine 4.90.
For the semi's, Aaron Hubbard drew the bye, which left the ol' man to face Pearce. The chance for an all Hubbard final was gone when the 'Bird made a hard move to the centerline and DH was forced to lift. Pearce would have been tough to get around regardless, as he posted his quickest lap of the event, a 4.88 coupled with a .427 lite.
Larry and Jean Pearce and crew, recorded their first TPSA victory when Aaron went red (.391) in ol' Blue, making the final somewhat anticlimactic. Pearce put an exclamation point on the event with a 4.90 that was indicative of the consistency he had shown the entire race. Rumor has it there was some champagne iced down in the "UT" trailer for just such an occasion! Congratulations to the Pearce's and all of the teams for a great event.
Also, a tip of the cap to some of the best fans we've had the priviledge to race for. Every lap, each team, win or lose, was met with cheers and applause when they towed back in front of the stands and down the fence line. Thank you all for coming out and supporting this event. Special thanks to the Bruce family, Fred Irby, and the entire staff of Ben Bruce Memorial Raceway for their hospitality and for allowing the TPSA to be part of the special place that is "the little track in the woods".
Four races, three different winners, four different runners-up. Next up, we return to Houston Motorsports Park on June 9th. Make your plans now to be there.

Sunny skies and a milder than normal climate (for this time of year) greeted the twelve teams that were on hand for the fourth race of the TPSA "2007 No Excuses" tour held at Ben Bruce Memorial Raceway in Evadale. 1. Joe Pigford (Reher-Morrison)...4.82 145
2. Jim Naylor (Steve Schmidt)...4.89 142
3. Lee Staiger (Cook-Lump-Benham)...4.92 142
4. Eddie Conrad (Conrad Racing)...4.93 140
5. Larry Pearce (Conrad Racing)...4.96 141
The quickest winning ET's during eliminations:
1. Joe Pigford 4.79 146
2. Larry Pearce 4.88 143
3. Lee Staiger 4.90 142
4. David Hubbard 4.98 141
Our thanks to the Bruce family, track manager Fred Irby, and the entire staff at the 'Dale, for allowing the TPSA to be part of their program. Special thanks to all of the fans that came out and made our first trip to the "little track in the woods" so enjoyable! The full race report will be posted soon.

Only in Houston......
We were rolling on our way home westbound on I-10, about 2 miles from the 290 exit in typical Sunday traffic. Up ahead, there's a dark spot in my lane that caught my attention. It's a complete car hood, and there's no way to miss it. Somehow the 'home makes it over without any drama, but the trailer tongue catches it, folds it like a taco underneath the trailer, and starts a pretty impressive spark and noise show. We pull over and are trying to get the mangled piece out when Nat pulls up on his bicycle and offers to help. After some serious sweatin', pullin', beatin', and draggin', we finally got the junk metal out. Sure thought I was gonna have to call Colony One Trailer before Nat came along!

***EVADALE this saturday MAY 19th*** -- DH, 05/17/07 6:37pm
The TPSA heads to Evadale this Saturday, May 19th, for the fourth race of the 2007 No Excuses Tour! Gates open at 2pm with open time trials scheduled to start around 3pm and our qualifying passes at 4 & 5pm. First round is scheduled for 6pm and we'll have about 1 hour between rounds. Looks like the weather is gonna co-operate with temps near 80* and low humidity. Evadale does not have a Friday nite t-n-t but overnite parking is allowed for TPSA members.
If you have any questions just come by the trailer.
Looking forward to seeing all of you there, and some great racing at the 'Dale. I'll be @ the track Friday so call my cell if you have any questions.

Ricky,
Your reputation as a head porter preceeds you, and anyone choosing your services will have invested well. However, the suggestion was not to use a spec head, but to require a head that already exists with a part number. Use any manufacturers head and perform any mods within the rules. This will preclude the use of a blank casting that would allow a head to have mods done that are not possible with a head that is already finished. There's no doubt you can modify a Dart 355, Brodix BB-4, Profiler, or CFE as it comes out of a box to exceed tha manufactures original performance levels. On the other hand, you can't equal the performance gains possible if you were to configure the combustion chambers, valve location, rocker boss's etc. as you can with a blank casting. The cost for the later is substantial where as the first is not cheap but more affordable and the performance gains are more uniform from builder to builder. The cubic $$$$$$$ required to build the "one-off" heads will limit the potential growth of the class in as much as most players can't or won't spend the money. Heads-up racing is expen$ive, but the original intent of the class was to have a good time at a reasonable cost. The rules as written disallow many components that would make the cars much faster and those rule are in place in a effort to controll costs. The rules probably won't change but it does make for an interesting discussion.

The way these things are geared, anything longer than the 1/8 you'll have a 40k worth of junk! (NT) -- 8k RPM plus at the stripe, 05/10/07 10:17pm

It's been a while since we checked in with the gang over at Rednek Kreations and as usual, they have a project going on. Seems Billy Joe Bob needed to move his house a couple of blocks down the street, and his truck had a flat so.......

Now I know what you're thinking "those boys just ain't right" but check out the engineering in this unit....

Notice the chrome heavy duty chain and store bought ball mount. No expense spared here. In the last pic, notice the load bearing member, complete with pilot shaft, hand crafted from a 4x4 block. Does it get any better than that??!!

- RULES REVISION?????? -- Questionaire, 05/ 8/07 9:41am
What if all cars had to weigh 2450 lbs minimum? What if the maximum cubic inches were to be 585 with no weight breaks. What if there can only be one 4 bbl, cast intake, no sheet metal, no weight penalty. Racing gas only, no alcohol so no weight penalty. What if all cylinder heads had to start out with a part number and available to the general public? All other rules stand. Would this tighten up the field and keep the cost reasonable? All existing engine combinations would be grandfathered, just have to weigh 2450 lbs. This is only a question!!!

- Roller Lifters: to anybody building an engine and using Comp Cam roller liftre,s BEWARE if your using there +300 tall version for a late model dart block there is a problem. When the cam is on the back side and the lifter is all the way down there is approx. .720 of lifter bore exposed, this lifter is way to short ,we had 5 lifter,s galled in the bores and one with top broke completly off.Isky lifter,s are .520 longer on the major part of the body and we have had no problems at all with these lifters in our engine. The damage that occured was on Deryl Wood&Rick Cowger,s engine luckly Rick heard the problem and shut it off, hopefully we will have it ready for Evadale. -- Conrad, 05/ 8/07 11:39am
