***HOUSTON MOTORSPORTS PARK, August 5th*** aka the "Root Beer Nationals" -- inside TPSA racing, 08/ 7/06 3:54pm
Race #10 of the ‘06 TPSA season was held Saturday, August 5th, at Houston Motorsports Park as part of the “Sudden Impact“ series. The TPSA troupe rolled in to HMP greeted by 60* temp, 29.92 barometer, and a slight overcast sky..... no, wait a minute.....nope, that was INSIDE, outside it was typical south Texas August weather. Hot, muggy, just enough cloud cover to tease ‘em with a rain shower. Many racers were hoping for a little moisture like they had last month, but the rain skirted around the HMP facility. There would be no cooling showers at this event.
If you keep up with the message board, you’ve seen the
“Root Beer’ story unfold. Terry Ashabranner’s new Bickel Firebird is painted a color called root beer. What started as a joke came full circle when Terry’s mom decided to have the last laugh. The “A” family shows up @ HMP with enough Blue Bell ice cream, and A&W Root Beer to make a root beer float for anyone present. They brought enough to announce it on the PA and Mom and the family made sure you got one. This is how this event became known as the "Root Beer Nationals". It was an unexpected treat on such a hot day and thanks to the entire A family and friends for making it happen.
One other new car was in attendance. Daryl Wood had TPSA regular Rick Cowger make the shake down runs on his clean Stroupe Camaro. Super nice car and look for it to be a player next year with Conrad Racing Engines power. Two other CRE hitters, Donny Williams and Rick Cowger had planned to be there but they both ran out of time. These guys say they will have their rides ready for the next event. Les Costales brought the red ‘Vette out for some TPSA action and all of the regulars were there making 14 teams ready to get it on.
After the second session of qualifying, Lee Staiger sat on the pole with a 4.932 with six other teams in the fours and four teams in the low 5’0s. Impressive to be sure with the weather conditions they faced.
1st round weather conditions were 84.7* with 75% humidity. First rattle out of the box had D Hubbard vs J Naylor. These guys always put on one of the best rounds anytime they face off and today would be no different. DH’s 4.9369 (.409rt) was an instant winner when Naylor left the red bulb hanging (.3951) in route to a 4.9335 lap. Ashabranner, in his new ’Bird, with Houston Engine & Balancing power and new Rutland tranny w/TCI converter, posted a 5.01 to trailer Costales’ Vette. Chad Hanson, another driver that attracts great races, lost to Staiger’s 4.930 (.494rt) shot. Hanson’s 4.996 (.434rt) came up just .0053 short at the stripe. Otwell’s 4.993 sent A Hubbard to the trailer, and Conrad used a 5.000 to stop "Dandy" Randy Elliot's .412 initiated 5.19. Clint Crownover left before the tree was activated and Cowger used the lap for another TT in Wood’s Camaro.
2nd round found the barometer improving slightly, temp @ 83.3*, 79% humidity. Hughes’ 4.975 ended the Ashabranner family’s hope of a Cinderella finish but the fine 4.999 that Terry put on the board speaks well for the future of this combo. This was Mr. T’s first 4 second time slip and improvements are just around the corner with more seat time and laps. Conrad stopped the #1 qualifier, Lee Staiger, with another 5.00 when Lee’s Camaro started skating around like Dorothy Hamill and he had to lift to a 5.15. In the last pair of the round, Otwell’s 5.002 left first, but couldn’t hold off DH’s 4.908 which was low ET of the event.
The semi pairings had two of the “Hill Country Boyz”, Hughes and Hubbard, squaring off and the “Dude” Conrad, was in the final via a bye run. The Boxman and DH didn’t disappoint those folks that are used to seeing these two buddies go for the throat when they draw each other. The Boxman was out first by .01, but his 4.968 wasn't quite enough to stay out in front of DH’s 4.920.
Weather for the final was much like it had been for the semi’s......81.8* with 82% humidity. Conrad was in his favorite right lane, did his job at the tree with a .044 rt advantage, but “Red” and her HE&B power bailed DH’s bacon out of the fire once again. Hubbard’s 4.938 proved to be enough to get around the Dude’s third 5.00 of eliminations.
Kudo’s to the Baker family, John Mandabach, and the entire staff @ HMP for another awesome show. Thanks also to all the fans and racers that make it possible.
PS. TPSA appreciates the donation of time and labor, as well as providing the scales, that Gene and Tommy Platt (Platt Bros Racing) make available to the group. This is a BIG job when you remember they also have to keep DH pointed in the right direction on raceday.

****Race #10 this Saturday @ HMP, gates open @ 4pm, TT's @ 6pm**** -- DH, 08/ 4/06 12:02pm
It's race time! Weather forecast looks good, a new car or two is reportedly showing up, some members that haven't been racing lately are coming.....we're expecting a high car count. Remember the "Root Beer" car has promised free root beer floats, so be sure and hit him up for one when you see him.
As a reminder, your TPSA entry ($125) is good for car/driver and two crew. Any additional crewmembers will pay the track gate fee. Be sure to tell 'em at the gate you're with TPSA. My trailer(green & white motorhome w/white stacker)serves as race control. Before you go to track tech come by the trailer and get your TPSA entry and tech form. Also, if you want to be part of the round drawings/pairings just come by the trailer about 30 minutes before the round. We usually pick someone from the crowd to draw names and the round pairings will posted at the trailer.
We will have two TPSA time trials (procedure calls for each car to make one in each lane) and once eliminations start there will be about one hour between rounds. There will be open TT sessions if you need additional laps. Everyone has done a good job of being ready and getting to the lanes on time....thank you. We will weigh after each round and the scales will be available during TT's so you can check your weight. If you have any questions just come by the trailer.
Looking forward to seeing all of you there, and some great racing at Houston Motorsports Park. I'll be @ the track tonite so call my cell, Rick Hanson, or Donald Hughes with any questions.
See ya in the lanes....

***NAYLOR nabs 1st win, CHAD captures 2nd runner up for the Hansons*** -- inside TPSA racing, 07/23/06 5:44pm
In what has become the scenario for much of the ‘06 season, the skies over Pine Vallley Raceway were dark and rain was visible in several directions early Saturday morning. Mr. Bill Bailey made the call about 1pm and said it was on....it was gonna have to wash us out to keep us from racing. It did sprinkle a couple of times but the program started without much of a delay.
After the 2nd round of qualifying, DH’s 4.92 led the pack with Naylor, Otwell, Hughes, Staiger, and Hanson all joining him in the 4 second zone. Once again, the pack had tightened up, and it was obvious the teams had found some performance gains.
First round had “Dandy” Elliott advancing over Aaron Hubbard, Otwell (once again with Ben’s spare motor) trailered Worley, Hanson was automatically in the next round, when the “Boxman” Hughes turned on a .392 red, Conrad’s .383 red gave DH a free pass into round two, and Naylor’s 4.917 parked Staiger’s 4.919 in a great side by side race. Lee has battled some gremlins all year, but is returning to the performance levels he displayed early in the season.
Round two featured Otwell,s .407rt, 4.97 defeating Elliott’s .409rt, 5.18, (great lite by both guys), Hanson going to the semi’s by virtue of DH’s .394 red, and Naylor drew the bye and improved to a 4.89 @141.38.
Semi action had Hanson with the bye, and in the best race of the season, Naylor’s .5083 initiated 4.9027 snuck by Otwell’s, .4531rt, 4.9581 by .0002!...to the fourth digit....are you kiddin’ me?! It wasn’t close, it was microscopic.
It was now time for the finals and Ed reportedly found some nodoze for his pilot because he knew the kid, Hanson, would be on time. It must have worked, Naylor out first with a .421 to Hanson’s .430 and Hanson’s best pass of the nite @ 4.96 could not catch the low et and top mph of the event for Naylor and Ed, 4.8779 @ 141.78. The “Bedrock” crew has been puttin’ in a lot a late hours and the testing paid dividends for this team with their first TPSA win. In fact, Jim won his first round of the year at the last race @ HMP. Congratulations to the Naylor team on a great job. The pits were buzzing long after the final with their performance at Pine Valley and the fact they were able to improve from a 4.94 qualifying best to the stellar 4.877 in eliminations.
Special thanks go out to the Bailey family, (Bill had the track in excellent condition as usual), the staff @ Pine Valley Raceway and the fans that came out despite the threat of bad weather.
Next event will be August 5th @ Houston Motorsports Park.

Ok DH (Hubbard) You've had that firebird long enough to come up with a nick name for it. I suggest you come up with one real soon, if not we will have to tag it ourselves. The latter may or may not be to your liking. By the way Jim and I have tentatively nick named ours the Red Head. We may have to call on some of the leading Nickologist in the field. Oh I'm thinking some one like Big or Mike Morgan could pen a name to the car. Hmmm lets see Nessty cause it's a Ness car and its nasty. Or maybe checkered tomato no explanation necessary. Well you get the drift you have till Saturday or we call in the Nickologist.

****SUDDEN IMPACT JULY 8th @ HOUSTON MOTORSPORTS PARK**** -- DH, 07/10/06 3:24pm
What an effort by the Baker's, John Mandabach, and the staff of HMP! Before the rain came, John told me not to worry, the track would be better if we got a little moisture. Right on schedule, shortly before 5pm, the track got an afternoon shower, about an hour in duration. This gave the track crew, led by Dean Baker, an opportunity to showcase their talents, and before long, the track was dry, prepped and ready for action. True to John's prediction, most of the TPSA teams were QUICKER after the rain than they were at our last race here in June! Great job by the HMP team...not only were we able to race, we actually finished a little earlier than the posted schedule. Thanks to everyone @ HMP and we'll see you again August 5th!
All of the TPSA teams are continuing to improve and the field is tightening up at every event. The points battle is coming down to the wire with only four races remaining on the schedule. Congrats to Richard Otwell and his crew for their first final round appearance, and thanks to all of the teams for taking a chance on the weather.
The homepage, points, and results pages have been updated. Our next event will be back in the piney woods @ Pine Valley Raceway (Lufkin) on July 22nd.

It's a natural progression, or evolution, that takes place in any form of racing, particularly a heads up class. Technology changes daily and all racers are looking to improve their performance; be it chassis, motor, data acquisition, or set up related. These things cost $$ and most of us have to set priorities and work within a budget to achieve our ultimate goal(s). Ashabranner, Cowger, Gonzales, Winscott and others, have nice cars now but they're looking to update for next year. If they have landed a corporate sponsor, or won the lotto they sure haven't told me.....LOL. How would you tell these guys they can't update their combo or limit the $$ they spend? The TPSA rules have remained consistant and proven to be an effective equalizer of performance vs. dollars spent. The level of interest, new members/cars, and new cominations being prepared are an indication of the TPSA's growth and a vote of confidence for it's future. Come on out and join the fun! -- History 101...inside TPSA racing, 06/28/06 12:12am
Down the page there's mention of the legendary "SPOT" and it's place in the history of TPSA. That story wouldn't be complete without mentioning the "shoebox" of David Baldwin. The year was 2003 and the '55 and Spot had a titanic battle for the championship all year long with the points lead going back and forth between these two teams.
DH got by his old friend, Jimmy Phillips and Spot,(owned by Larry Camp) in the final @ Temple on a fluke when Spot didn't shift out of low gear. Jimmy had DH covered like a blanket in ET (around .15, if my memory's correct) but got a bad break. No one knew at the time what a pivotal round that would prove to be!
The season wound down and the championship would be decided at the last race of the year. Baldwin was ahead by 1 point (again trusting memory) and Jimmy and Spot were ready to take it to the wire! Unfortunately the rains came, the race was cancelled, not re-scheduled, and the championship was awarded to Baldwin. It was an anti-climatic finish to a year long battle.
Following that race, Camp sold SPOT to Matthews who races in the 4.70 index program, and Baldwin also went index racing (& some Top Sportsman too, I think). These days, Jimmy is shooting in Tournaments around the country, and Baldwin is still doing some racing. Those were two outstanding cars and more importantly, two great competitors. Maybe we'll see them back in TPSA someday?

****New Faces in the Winner's Circle!...Conrad and Hughes win their first TPSA race**** -- inside TPSA racing, 06/25/06 6:56pm
Captains log June 24th. The Bailey family and staff had Pine Valley Raceway primed and ready for the TPSA Double Header race. The only problem was the Saturday morning weather looked too familiar...dark skies and clouds that threatened to open up at any second. After a brief shower that only soaked the top end, the PVR crew led by Bill Bailey, had the track dry and ready for the TPSA assault. The first order of business for the day was to conclude the postponed event from March 25th.
Mr. "T", Terry Ashabranner was a no show giving Chad Hanson a competition bye into the 2nd round. In the second round, D Hubbard and D Hughes squared off, and the Boxman gave DH a free pass into the semi's when he turned on the redlite. Lee Staiger had his Camaro set on stun with a round best 4.94 @ 139.45 but he too left the red bulb hanging on the tree (an agonizing .3993!) which advanced Eddie Conrad's 5.08 @ 136.86. Hanson drew Richard Otwell, another no show, and made a single into the semi's. For the semi's, Conrad drew the bye and improved to a 5.01 @ 138.55. Hanson and DH would decide who would meet the "DUDE" in the final, and it was Hanson getting there first to guarantee a first time winner. One of the best races of the year ensued with RT's and ET's separated by mere thousands of a second, and a margin of victory of less than .006! Eddie Conrad, with his Conrad's Racing entry, left first, and claimed his first TPSA victory. This marked Chad's first visit to the final pair and it's a safe we'll see him there again.
Now it was time for the regular schedule complete with the Outlaw Fuel Altereds and bracket program. After another short rain delay, the track was ready and so were the racers and fans. First round action had Chad Hanson's 5.06 @ 137.07 put away Jim Naylor's 5.15 @ 136.32, DH overcame
"Dandy" Randy Elliott's .417 initiated 5.14 with a 4.935, 140.89 hit, Lee Staiger advanced with a shutoff 5.27 against Clint Crownover's crowd pleasin' S-10, the
"Boxman", still flirtin' with disaster, lays the tree down with a .4005(RT)4.99 @ 139.23 to keep Ben Worley's 5.10 @ 133.14 from advancing, and Eddie Conrad continued his winning ways with a 5.10 to stop Aaron Hubbard's .409 5.24 effort.
Second round featured the two guys that were mowing the tree down, Hughes and Staiger, and it was Staiger seeing red for the second time this day. Hughes was right behind with a .417 RT. DH and Hanson were next up but Hanson's .01 RT advantage wasn't enough this time to fend off the 4.921 @ 140.98 (event low et) of Hubbard's. Conrad's bye run of 5.21 finished the round. The "Boxman's" name was drawn for the bye in the semi's and it would be Conrad vs DH for the other spot in the final. Conrad turned on the redlite and Hubbard's 4.92 @ 141.03 showed the Houston Engine & Balancing entry was ready for the money round.
On paper, DH enjoyed a slight performance edge going into the final, but we don't run time slips! The Glenn's Machine powered Beretta of Donald & HR (& Holley too) Hughes was uncharacteristically late but Hubbard needed some NO DOZ to give the HE&B TransAm a chance. At the stripe it was Hughes' 5.00 @ 137.95 puttin' the "ol' man's" 4.94 @ 141.02 (event top mph) to sleep for the nite.
Once again the Bailey family and staff overcame some challenging weather conditions and had the track in great shape. "Double B", Mr Bill Bailey worked his magic on track prep and everyone else made the event fun and provided some down home hospitality. TPSA will be back @ Pine Valley Raceway on July 22nd. Hope to see YOU there....

This tube chassis truck, owned by a fellow known as "Stamp" was built by Platt Bros. Racing in Groesbeck, Tx (near Waco)a couple of years ago. It runs bottom 5's with a sbc and a small kit. Gene & Tommy Platt (father & son, not brothers, but that's another story) are well known to the TPSA for helping the racers out, running the scales, answering questions, and trying to keep DH straight! This truck is an example of their work, and several of the TPSA racers have used their services. Also, Lyndon Rutland's brand new Platt Bros. '63 Vette should be at a racetrack testing soon. Give 'em a call @ 254 729-3377 for anything you need from scaling your car to building you a new ride. Thanks to the Platt's for your support of the TPSA.

Agent 1320 had a discussion the other day with a TPSA member regarding Erica Ender's bike. Turns out the member was correct...it is a Bourget (sp?), it's 10 ft. long, has a 121" motor, the custom wheels have spokes shaped like Slammers bottles, airbrushed graphics, etc. Seems the bike builder and Vic Cagnazzi are childhood buddies and VC ran a Bourget(?) decal on all of his racecars at no charge in the early days so the bike is a payback for VC's generosity and friendship. Pretty cool story, huh?

****HOUSTON MOTORSPORTS PARK JUNE 10th**** EPILOGUE -- DH, 06/14/06 1:29pm
It was a great race @ Houston Motorsports Park last Saturday! The Baker family, John Mandabach, and staff had the track in premier condition. Many of the TPSA teams ran personal best ET's (considering the 3300+ DA), and I've never witnessed the level of sportsmanship anywhere that was displayed by our members at this event. From borrowed motors, transmisssions, and converters, to difficult decisions that went against them, everyone had a smile on their face and wished their competitors good luck. Impressive stuff to be sure.
Speaking of motors, the semi's saw four different engine builders represented...G&G Performance (Richnow), Glenn's Machine (Hughes), Houston Engine & Balancing (Hubbard), and Reher Morrison (Otwell...borrowed from Ben Worley). All four used TCI converters, and three use Rutland Transmission to prep their 'glides.
It's great to have the "Killer", AJ Richnow, back with us driving Joe Gonzales' Public Enemy, and a RU at their first race is outstanding. Malcom LaGrone made a rare TPSA appearance with his crowd pleasin' '57 chevy, and demonstrated why he is the undisputed burn out king! Many close races during the nite, but the smallest margin was DH's .0059 1st round decision over Jim Naylor!
Mike Morgan (one of the TPSA's godfathers) came to check out the action and snap a few pics (thanks Mike) which are posted down the page. He's planning a return to TPSA action in the near future. Jeff Benham was also spotting hangin' out and maybe he'll bring his new '53 Vette out in legal trim when it's finished?
Miranda was there shooting video of each car, each pass and they're available in vhs/dvd format. Contact her @ MANDOZ67@aol.com. Jesse Henslee also captured some awesome photo's with an unique perspective (some of his work posted below). There will be a photo CD available (167 shots) soon. Thanks to them both for providing their services.
That's it for now. Next up is June 24th at Pine Valley Raceway. It will be a double header race for those racers still in from the postponed May 27th race. The schedule will be posted here by the end of the week. TPSA will return to HMP July 8th. See ya in the lanes.

***HOUSTON MOTORSPORTS PARK*** X-TREME SHOOTOUT -- inside TPSA racing, 06/11/06 9:52pm
Well, it's hard to know where to start with this report. The racing action/pairings were intense, we had DRY weather, lots of new "stuff" at HMP and the X-TREME SHOOTOUT had plenty of action. TPSA rolled in for our first visit to the improved HMP and it's obvious they have spent a great deal of time & money making the park even better than when we were there in '06. From the meticulous grounds and ZERO trash, extra shutdown room, re-routed,widened return road & turn off, relocated lite poles, expanded pit area, relocated burn out area and starting line, and more, it seems every inch of the place has been upgraded, groomed, and made even more racer and fan (family) friendly. The Baker's, John Mandabach, and staff have provided the Houston area with a premier 1/8 mile facility. Their hospitality was second to none and it was obvious they meant it when they told us to "make yourself at home".
The weather conditions were not a surprise for this time of year in the Bayou City. Sunny, hot, slight breeze, and high barometer faced the racers in the 1st round of qualifying. Did I mention it was hot? Track temp was 138*. Fourteen teams crowded the lanes and Conrad (vacation), Ashabranner (Montazuma's revenge), Winscott (sold car to upgrade), Holcomb (damaged..back soon we hope), Crownover (master cyl failed loading up!), Pigford (motor on dyno this week) were missed and dutifully "bad mouthed" because they weren't there...
After the 2nd qualifier, D. Hubbard's 4.942 was #1, with Jim Naylor's 4.997 close behind for the #2 spot. There were 9 cars in the 5.0's and quicker and conditions were sure to improve when the sun set. One of the most popular drivers, Donny Williams, was struck by bad luck AGAIN, as his pristine black Chevelle got out of shape at the gear change, made a hard move, and got into the wall during the 1st session. Donny's fine, it's cosmetic damage, but when will this father/son team get a break! Hurry back Donny!
The call went out for 1st round and there were some monster match ups with major point implications. Weather conditions were 84.3*, 62%, and 1400ft. Altimeter...very similiar to Angleton a couple of weeks earlier. First pair out was C. Hanson/L. Staiger with Hanson making a competition bye when Lee couldn't make the call. Not sure what gremlin got to Lee's Camaro. 2nd pair out was R. Cowger and D. Pirtle, driving Ray Brewer's car for the 2nd time. There was a full moon out and it was going to make it's presence felt starting with this pair. They were staged, restaged, and there was confusion about who won and why. Both driver's and teams handled it very professionally and when the decision was made Pirtle would be moving to the 2nd round, Cowger and his team wished them good luck. Great sportsmanship was displayed by both drivers/teams. 3rd pair..remember the full moon? teammates R. Otwell/B. Worley. You didn't know they were 'mates? Yup, Worley loaned Otwell his spare motor for this event and Otwell says thanks with a 4.954 to 5.098 to put Ben on the trailer! Apparently no team orders there. Great show of sportsmanship from the Worley's as well. 4th pair...how about #1 Hubbard vs. #2 Naylor. How is this possible?...by the random draw proceedure that TPSA uses. Naylor improved to a .415 initiated 4.957, but it wasn't enough to hold off DH's 4.930. Margin of victory .0059! The "Bedrock" team is improving every race. 5th pair had D. Hughes advancing when R. Elliott, using a trans borrowed from Otwell, (we had more transplanted parts/pieces this nite than Frankenstein did!) had trouble staging, and returning "hired gun" AJ Richnow, driving the G&G Performance "Public Enemy" Firebird, owned by Joe Gonzales, ran a 5.05 to trailer A. Hubbard's 5.22. Malcolm LaGrone came out this weekend and was rewarded with a 1st round competition bye when D. Williams was unable to return.
2nd round had DH running 4.892 @ 141.29 (low et of the race) over Pirtle's 5.16, Otwell posted a 4.960 (with the borrowed motor) to stop LaGrone, the "Boxman" (Hughes) used a .419rt, 4.99 @ 139.88 lap to stop the Hanson's for the nite. Chad and his Dad are making steady progress with the new tune up and ran a fine 5.02. The "Killer" Richnow, continued his comeback with a 5.03 @ 138.59 on the bye run.
The semi-finals had Richnow with another 5.03 to move into the final when Otwell's transbrake malfunctioned. Once again, two of the Hill Country Boyz had to face off and the "Boxman" lived up to the hype with a .4001 (!!) reaction time, but his 5.02 couldn't stop the top end charge of DH's 4.904 @ 141.20 (.415 rt).
Weather for the final...79.8*, 74%, 1000ft. Altimeter, full moon, slight breeze, track temp 103*. The "Killer" and DH complete their burnouts, roll forward and stop short of the pre-stage beam. Both drivers sat there a while, reportedly AJ was trying to tie his shoes and DH was looking for a '70's rock and roll station! It wasn't the infamous "burn down at the bleach box" that took place at Angleton a couple of years ago, but it was pretty good entertainment. DH prestaged, the "Killer", looking for a victim, turned both bulbs on, DH right behind. AJ drew first, but DH's 4.898 @ 141.42 (top speed of the meet) would not be denied under the full moon.
I was busier than a flea on a hound dog, so I don't know the results of the other classes @ the X-TREME SHOOTOUT, but judging from the reactions of the racers and fans it was very successful. TPSA will be back @ HOUSTON MOTORSPORTS PARK on July 8th....make your plans now!
NEXT RACE......JUNE 24th @ PINE VALLEY RACEWAY

- Eddie Conrad -- jeff benham, 06/ 8/06 9:46pm
Dustin I know you are mad but what puzzles me is you say you are not mad about the money. Just the time it took to get it done and that you didn't even get to make a pass after all that. Then you talk about your shop promising completion dates etc etc. Well unles I read your story wrong I never saw one mention of a completion date given to you by Eddie. Yes I agree it took too long to get it done but from what I read a bunch of the time was used up waiting for parts. According to your own words you waited about a month for the block (3-4 weeks) then 2 more weeks for 1st crank. Then another couple of weeks on the 2nd. That is 2 months waiting on parts. According to your own words you didnt pay Eddie to order the block until January 13, 2006. In my book that is when the time frame started. It is now June 8th 2006 thats almost 5 months gone by. Two of which were waiting on parts so that makes almost 3 months of Conrad having all the stuff to build the motor. But you fail to mention to everyone that when you tried running the car was back in May. You waited until now to post all this now only because Eddie bought the parts you were wanting. So the way I see it it was less than 2-1/2 months to completely machine, balance and assemble your motor. That is not too bad for custom machine shops. at least around here. Take it to jeff walburg and tell him to put a rush on it and watch him laugh you out the door! Hell I waited from the 1st week of november until the 2nd week of april for a CRANKSHAFT!!! Then you talk about you and Stacy Sicinski firing the motor up cutting the filter open and finding trash in it but you still take it to the track and try to run it!!!!WTF??? They dont get fixed on thier own! That filter should have been taken to Eddie for him to look at and the car never run. Then you bitch about not being able to make a pass. I would think breaking the transmission would have ended your day anyways. In my line of work if a customer notices a problem and continues to run the machine that is considered misuse and neglect and will void any and all warranties!!! I am not saying what Eddie did was right but what you did was not right either. You knew there was a problem (Trash in the filter) and you ran it anyways. Then you won't take it back to him to make right and take it somewhere else and bitch because that guy wants to get paid for his work too when Eddie would have fixed it for nothing. Eddie has helped me more than anyone else has since I have been racing. One time we were assembling a motor at his shop for TPSA. We were thrashing to try and make a race. Eddie got sick and was out a few days. This was long before Jeff Owen worked there. I called Eddie to see if he was coming in to work so I could work on our motor. He said he was sick as a dog and couldn't make it. He then told me that he knew we wanted to make that race and told me to come to his house and get his keys to the shop so I could work on my engine. Name one other machine shop that will give you the keys to the shop so you can work on your own stuff using thier tools and equipment! Eddie also one time met me and Jeff at the shop at about 11 or 12 o clock in the night to line hone a block for us so we could make a race. We were there until 1 or 2 in the morning doing that. He also gave me a motor o run when I didnt have one at the time, gave me a convertor, set up the gear in my rear end, and then hauled us out to the track in his toter. Eddie is as good as they come I don't think he would intentionally try to screw anyone. If you would have gave the man the chance to make it right he would have but instead you had to resort to this childish bashing of him and his business on the net. I got news for you Eddie Conrad was in business and building record setting motors since before you were born and he has forgot more than most engine machinist will ever know. and he will still be building motors long after you are gone.

*****ARE YOU READY???***** -- DH, 06/ 9/06 11:03am
The Hill Country Boyz are loaded and headin' for H-town. We'll be at HMP tonite so come on out & get a couple of test hits. Weather looks good, just typical summer (hot) conditions. Any questions give me a call on the cell, or locally you can call Rick Hanson.
We usually just pick someone from the crowd to draw names. The round pairings, as well as the race schedule, will posted at the trailer. We will have two time trials (please make one in each lane) and once eliminations start there will be about one hour between rounds. Everyone has done a good job of being ready and getting to the lanes on time....thank you. We need to be on time to keep the show moving and HMP runs a tight ship and expects us to keep on schedule. We will weigh after each round and the scales will be available during TT's so you can check your weight.
If you have any questions just come by the trailer. Looking forward to seeing all of you there, and some great racing at Houston Motorsports Park. See ya in the lanes!

Ok racers we have some late breaking news. As an added incentive to the S&S Racing Index Shootout, Mr. Greg Self of Standard Electric has stepped up with a $1000 bonus for each index class winner at the end of the year. Yes we will be going to a points system with 10 points for each round win. You will get 10 points for attending the race and 10 points for each round win also the Number 1 qualifier gets 10 points each race. So starting this Saturday we will be keeping points. I know this is late notice but we are trying to make this a fun event for the racers and fans involved. HMP will be the place to be and see if you can knock off our 5.80 winner Hardy Williams, the 6.20 winner Randy Trice and the 7.00 winner Michael Cossey. So lets line em up this Saturday at Houston Motorsports Park.

Ok boys and girls, here's the official race schedule straight from Mr. John Mandabach @ HMP. Don't worry about the date...he and wife Sarah have a newborn in the house (a daughter born about 2 weeks ago) and he's lucky if he knows what YEAR it is! Seriously, the race is this Saturday, June 10th and when you see John at the track be sure and remind him what the date is...LOL.
Looking for a good turnout for our 1st race @ HMP this year and everyone says the "hook" is awesome, in fact some guys testing last week were actually taking "bite" out of the car! The "Hill Country Boyz" will be there Friday so come on out and get some t-n-t laps in during the Friday nite program. See ya in the lanes.

- HMP TOP END NIGHTMARES -- Bam-Bam, 06/ 5/06 8:05am
I have a Theory about Houston Motorsports Park and the wrecks that happen there. Like I say this is just a Theory. The Circle Track bowl is located just to the left of the eigth mile with the end of the bowl and the end of the eigth mile ending up at the same spot. To the right running the entire length of the track are pine trees. What if there is some kind of wind that occasionaly gusts down or something getting underneath the cars. Remember Ennis had cars flipping over mid track because of rouge winds. Could we be having something like this at HMP??? My only recommendation at this point is if you are going over 100mph in a light weight, big tired race car then PULL THE CHUTE.... The small tire heavy cars don't seem to be affected. Heck even the faster pro mods don't seem to have a problem. With the track being longer this year you may be tempted not to use the chute. Pull it or Pile it

Well guys USE YOUR CHUTE !! The car got loose after the traps and by the time I got that under control there was no more track . I had to go to the brakes or 1st gear , I chose both and into the wall I went . I will not blame the track it was my doing . If I would have used the CHUTE I would still have a car . The car is not a total loss it will have to have a new body , some tin work ,a new rear end and about a year of TLC and $$$$ . I have been wanting a new paint job anyway ( anyone got a paint gun ) . See you guys at the track on Sat.

My View.... -- DH, 06/ 5/06 4:58pm
A few observations need to be made regarding the posts about Don's crash. It's always unfortunate when anyone damages a car and there's the inevitable "what ifs" after the fact. He walked away uninjured, which is the most important fact of all. Don has years of experience, is familiar with chassis tuning, and this post is not questioning his ability. If you're a driver, that hasn't had some sort of "incident", you're probably in the vast minority. Sometimes "stuff" just happens. Hopefully, Don can make it back sooner than he thinks.
A couple of items for you to ponder, especially you guys that are relatively new to the sport or don't have a ton of chassis tuning experience. Most of us spend countless hours tuning the chassis for RT, 60' time, and anything that helps the car accelerate, but how often do we consider the load on the chassis under braking? When we race @ 1/4 mile facilities no one gives a second thought to the braking geometry that's taking place because we have PLENTY of room to stop, probably with little or no brake being applied. Once you start applying (needing) more brake pressure in an effort to stop is when toe in, bump steer, ft. end braking IC, brake dive, brake wrap down, shock settings, and many more complex chassis issues, too lengthy to cover here, come into play. All of these can greatly impact how you car handles under braking. If you don't understand these issues or need help checking them, I'd strongly recommend you contact your favorite chassis shop for help. In the Houston area, John Harrison @ 713 690-4233 would be a great choice as he has many years of experience in all phases of chassis work. He also is one of the "godfathers" of the TPSA and still a staunch supporter.
The bottom line is plenty of cars have gone down HMP safely..some w/parachutes and some without. Otwell, Worley, Naylor test there often (I believe only Naylor uses a chute)and we have had several TPSA races there without incident. Ultimately, it's up to each of us to determine what equipment we need to safely stop our car. Do you need one chute, two chutes, or in the case of extremely efficient braking systems (carbon fiber, ABS, etc) perhaps you decide you don't need to hang the laundry out at all. Give it some thought, ask questions if you need help, do what YOUR car needs (& what you're comfortable with) and let's go racing. See ya Saturday @ HMP.
PS. One important thing to remember is...IF you lock up the brakes, the rear end will "kick out" and the car WILL come around unless corrective action is taken.
PSS. Ed, get with me @ HMP and I'll give you "the rest of the story" on Ennis. I'ts much too long to get into here, but what the real story is might surprize you!

****ANGLETON RACEWAY PARK**** -- DH, 05/30/06 11:53am
I hope everyone enjoyed their Holiday weekend and most of us had an extra day off. Richard & Kathy Otwell, along with the 2 Bryan's, and all of the staff of ADR provided us with a fine facility to enjoy. You can tell how much effort they have invested in the track and grounds and I'm sure there's more to come. Thanks for letting us be a part of your program @ Angleton.
TPSA had a good turnout and we thank all of the racers, crews, and families that came out. A couple of the teams had some gremlins pop up but they were still there and their efforts are much appreciated.
Got to see some old friends while we were there. Randy Hunsucker(sp?) the original track owner was there, our old buddy Henry with a new 'do, Terry, the starter, made a guest appearance and controlled the starting area, one of the godfathers of TPSA, "Mr. Big" Mark Neberman (thanks for the pics)was strolling the pits and the lanes keeping an eye on everything, and Joe Pigford, of NHRA fame and soon to be TPSA racer, came by to check out the action. In my pits, Tommy Costales was on hand to supervise, and a couple of old friends from our Galveston days, Aaron Cole and Robert Frazier brought the wives out for a little TPSA action. No better way to spend a Memorial Day weekend.
Next up is June 10th @ Houston Motorsports Park. The tentative schedule is gates open @ 4pm with the action beginning @ 6pm. I'm sure TPSA members can get in early and I'll post more info as it's available.
On a somber note, Rick Cowger's grandfather passed away in an auto accident, and Gene Platt's father passed after a lengthy illness. Please keep these families in your thoughts and prayers and our condolences go out to them.
See ya @ HMP.....

****ANGLETON RACEWAY PARK ......MAY 27**** -- inside TPSA racing, 05/29/06 5:19pm
We finally got a race in without the dreaded "R" word! The action started Friday nite as the "Hill Country Boyz" got there early, staked out a corner of the pits, and circled the wagons in anticipation of the Conrad team's arrival. You remember Conrad's CRE team had called out the Houston Engine & Balancing boyz and the stage was set. Although the "Boxman" runs Glenn's Machine power, he's a charter member of the Hill Country Boyz and volunteered to watch their back if things got ugly. They weren't unloaded yet when another early entry, Jim Naylor, arrived with his red 'Vette. The "Boxman" and Aaron Hubbard made some hits and Naylor, in full stealth mode, made a couple of NO TIME early shut off passes and finished the session with a good lookin' full pass (complete with dark scoreboards) to keep 'em guessing. Naylor was primed to defend Brazoria County's honor (he's a local) and keep the $$ and trophy.
15 TPSA teams showed up Saturday @ Richard Otwell's Angleton Raceway Park under partly cloudy skies, with mid 80* temp, low barometer, and a 12 mph tail wind. The track was well prepped and the grounds were groomed, along with other improvements that Richard and his team have completed since his acquisiton of the track.
Before time trials started, Otwell (Cavalier) and Clint Crownover (S-10) were "discussing" the advantages and weaknesses of each other's rides. I think Otwell said the "only thing pickups are good for is hauling hay" and Crownover countered with "it's better than bringing your wife's economy car to a racetrack". Well, before long they went to DH and set up a best 2 out of 3 grudge match. This left Ashabranner, Conrad, Elliott, A Hubbard, DH, Hughes, Staiger, Worley, Williams, Winscott, Naylor, Hanson, and Darrin Pirth (Ray Brewer's new driver) to settle the issue of who would leave ADR the TPSA winner.
After the two TT's were over, only two cars had been in the four second zone. This was the first race of the "summer" air conditions that we've faced this year and the 3800 DA (corrected) air, coupled with a HOT, sunny, racing surface, proved to be a challenge for all of the teams. One of the "locals", Naylor was the first (and only) in the 1st session to get a 4 second time slip with a 4.993. DH would come out in the 2nd session and secure the #1 qualifying spot with a 4.957 @ 140.97 (top speed of the event) blast.
By the time 1st round was called to the lanes the temp and track had cooled somewhat and the guys were ready to rock. Conrad's 5.03 caught "Dandy" Elliott's (another local).032 holeshot initiated 5.14, the "Boxman" scored with a 5.04 over A Hubbard's 5.24. The fellow "Hill Country Boyz" traveled 600 miles to face each other 1st round! Chad Hanson put the family's black 'Vette into round 2 with a 5.14 over Naylor's redlighting 5.015. On this day, Naylor was probably Brazoria County's best hope to keep the trophy @ home. "Big" Ben Worley ran a great 5.00 to trailer one of CRE's gunslingers, "Mr. T" Ashabranner, and DH ran low et and top speed of the round (4.961 @ 140.36) against Ray Brewer's new driver, Darrin Pirth. Darrin did his job with a .422 RT, but his 5.14 ET fell a little short. It's great to see Mr. Brewer and his Baretta back at the track and Darrin performed very well at his 1st TPSA and first race with a pro tree. Lee Staiger and his Camaro would round out the 1st round with a competition bye when the Winscott family's Camaro had some handling issues and decided discretion was the better part of valor. Unfortunately, the hardluck award, goes again to Mr. Nice Guy, Donny Williams. Donny's another one of Eddie Conrad's "shooters" and they have worked nonstop on the Chevelle to make it a player in TPSA. The performance has improved steadily, but a broken trans would keep him from racing this day.
2nd round, the sun's beginning to set, and conditions have improved again. 1st pair out, DH's 4.944 (low et of the race) is enough to catch Hanson's holeshot(.01) 5.12. This kid's a real driver and his time is coming. Worley continued to exhibit his improvement with an unbelievable .4009 RT with a 4.995 to handle CRE's boss, Conrad's, red lighting 5.07. Worley also became only the third car to run in the 4's @ this event. The "Boxman" was close to the 4's with his 5.02 victory over Staiger's shut off 5.99. Lee's Camaro had an electric gremlin that prevented the 1-2 shift and he had to lift.
For the semi's we had 3 cars left. The "Hill Country Boyz" were well represented with Donald "Boxman" Hughes and DH, and Ben Worley with his Reher-Morrison bullet had shown the power and driving ability to make him a favorite. "Big" Ben's name was drawn for the bye and that matched travelling buddies Hughes and Hubbard up. Hughes', Glenn's Machine, Rutland Transmission entry moved first with a .419 RT but Hubbard's, Houston Engine & Balancing, Rutland Transmission, TCI, Platt Bros, Goodyear, sponsored machine was able to take the stripe with a 4.945. Worley stopped the clocks with a 5.00 on his bye run.
The final was shaping up to be a barn burner! DH had enjoyed a slight performance advantage at this event but Ben's RT's had been stellar and could prove to be the difference. But the cruel twists of fate had other plans. As the two racers were preparing for the final, a bracket racer lost a motor, got water under the tires and took out a sizeable portion of the guardrail. It was after 10pm and the repairs would take an estimated 3 hours. After discussion with the remaining bracket races, and TPSA officials, it was decided in the best interest of safety to postpone the remainder of the event. The Worley, Hubbard final will be run at an upcoming TPSA race, to be announced.
The match race went to the "economy car" this time but the truck says he ain't done. Crownover did run a career best 4.99 @ over 140mph earlier in the day. More details as they're available.
Be sure to mark your calendars. June 10th will be the return of the TPSA to Houston Motorsports Park. Will the Houston guys win one at home, or will the $$ and the trophy slip through their fingers? Be at HMP to check it out.

The gates will be open early Saturday for TPSA members or come out for the Friday nite races and camp out with the "Hill Country Boyz". Richard, the two Bryan's, and Mike H say the track will be hooking and the weather looks favorable for this time of year. The TPSA track records are 4.920 @ 141.24, but last weekend's testing hints the records may fall. For more info go to www.angletonraceway.com or the link on our homepage is "hot". See ya in the lanes.

- Angleton track -- Conrad, 05/21/06 2:38pm
The track looked good for a couple of teams. Naylor& Elloit wasn,t having any problems going down the track. If Naylor get,s the shocks figured out he should go 4.80,s no problem.Randy Elliot was looking good for being gone so long,he could bracket race the vette at 5.0,s. Over all the track is ready for TPSA baring one little pot hole on the return road which they said they would have fixed by race time.See you there Eddie Conrad
