Baytown "Stampede". -- Lidiak, 02/26/09 10:22am
Is anybody going to be testing this weekend at the "Stampede" at Baytown? I was going and would like to get some early season pictures. Hope to see some of you guys. New Season, here we go!
Who do you guys use for transmission work? I need to get my powerglide serviced. I have the same basic setup as some of you. Looking for local guy in Houston area. -- Need a good tranny guy!, 02/24/09 10:22am
***End of an Era*** Crane Cams closed the doors today after over 50 years in business. Way back there as a teenager, I bought my first performance cam from them. Word on the street is Holley's hangin' on by a thread and may be next. Sad days indeed... -- DH, 02/24/09 7:26pm
Still waiting:( -- Jim, 02/24/09 8:45am
Sure do miss the guys and the competition.Hope this season is better than ever.Still waiting on my bailout check, even sent Obama a self addressed envelope.lol
TPSA returns to Little River Dragway (Temple) April 4th. Robert "Hutch" Hutchison purchased Little River late last year and has been working on the historic track nonstop. The entire 1/8th mile was ground and polished and the bumps and humps are gone! The picture below shows the track surface shortly after the grinding was complete... before the polishing.
The picture below shows some on track action on 2/14 and you can see the groove settin' up. With events scheduled twice a week, it should be in great shape for our event.
In other news, the official TPSA scales are in and the ramps and bridges are scheduled to arrive mid week. We still need volunteers for scale duty. If you can help or know anyone that would like to get involved please let me know.
Also, the salute to the "top ten" on the homepage has been updated to feature #7 Eddie "the Dude" Conrad. The remaining teams will each be featured so be sure to check the homepage for your favorite...
John Force must be a TPSA fan and read our message board! He's named his 2009 Tour "No Excuses". Shoot, we had that back in '07 but John's welcome to it...LOL. -- ., 02/ 6/09 5:58pm
Yeah, I wrecked my new car, DAMNIT !!! You know there's a saying that goes something like "There's NO FOOL Like an OLD FOOL" and this "OLD FOOL" is feeling the part today. I know it wasn't a good day to be testing and I know that the track had just been ground and didn't have much, if any, new rubber down and etc. etc. etc. but at the end of the day "driver error" caused me to wreck that car. We'll get her fixed and we'll be running both cars as quick as we can but probably not by Mar. 7th.. I'm glad I didn't get hurt and I was lucky the car didn't get hurt any wose than it did but that still doesn't make it taste any better. See you guy's at Evadale. -- PIGMAN, 01/26/09 10:00am
Testing this Weekend? -- Lidiak, 02/ 3/09 11:44pm

A fan sent these pics in from some early '80's TPSA action. How many teams and drivers can you name and for bonus points, name the tracks! -- DH, 01/25/09 9:53pm
Look what our ol' buddy Jeff Benham has been up to! He's been working on this project for a long time...
Jeff's quote "Here is a pic of my new car I just painted. It is House of Kolors Passion Pearl with a Silverwhite Pearl on the inset. I know it is not perfect but I thought I didnt do bad for my first time especially with a cheap a** gun from harbor frieght plus the price was right too. I plan on running IHRA Div 4 Top Sportsman and some local heads up events." Looks good Jeff, and if you need someone to color sand & buff that bad boy call Donald or me. There's a guy in Austin that does great work for a very reasonable price....and he's quick too. -- DH, 01/21/09 1:00am

We'll find out if we improve on our '70's with C25 and the old combo. Gary

What I herd at the banquet & other bs
The Abbotts are building 2 sets of heads they think will get there. If they get close the kids driving will do the rest.
Conrads driving Winscotts GTO and will have a different combo. Conrads motor in Lebhams car. another 2 car team
Crownovers new business will keep him from changing much. Which car hes in is the question.
Randy Elliott will run his combo harder, et should improve.
Rick Hanson is working on a new engine, will start season with old combo.
Aaron Hubbards work and school hours will keep him out of the picture. David Hubbard said he won't race without Kay. If he does race he'll drive the car that Crownover dont.
Donald Hughes is back and will make up some et on the starting line.
The Ford team of Mitchell & BEck are building more hp and expect to see the ets drop.
Team O, PO or OP, Otwell's the hp king but how many drivers will be in his car this year. Could be the champ if he stays with 1 shoe all year. Pearce is my choice for champ. Driving has improved and has same NRC power with the huge crew that makes NHRA look small. The Wood & Cowger team will improve with Naiser hp but the big deal is if they get the setup & help that goes with it.
Billie Peters is working on updating with some new heads and shortblock mods. Another one that can 00 the tree.
Joe & Roy Pigford will run 2 cars. RM has been looking for more hp to put them at the front. Look for the repeat champ to be tough. Merv Davis rejoins the team as a 2nd crewmember.
The Talley & Nickens team should make some serious hp. Should run near the front and be a factor.
RJ Dorsett is waiting on his TRE engine, and Donny Williams said he'll be back with the chevelle.
Don't know about the 50's with c25. Testing should be coming up and give us a clue. That's all I herd, what about you?
We're working on a special program for Bryan to sponsor during the course of the 2009 TPSA tour and the details will be announced shortly.
For those who may not be familiar with Bryan, he began building race cars in 1984. Widely known primarily for his "Tin Man" Dragster line, he built many championship rides over the years. In 1991 Edmond Richardson won the NHRA Super Comp World Championship in a Tin Man Dragster. In 1992 Scotty Richardson followed his brother and won his own NHRA Super Comp World Championship...also in a Tin Man Dragster. Bryan built winning rides for Steve Dallas, Greg and Jeff Brotherton (of Brodix), and Ricky Hughes to mention a few. Bryan builds a killer door car as well and many competitive doorslammers came from the Tin Man Race Car shop such as the Herzog Brothers Outlaw 10.5 car and Bob Mungles blown truck. Bryan has also restored several cars that were sold at the world famous Barrett-Jackson Auction and his creations have won many car shows around the country. The term "automotive artist" doesn't fit anyone better than Bryan Arriola. The fit, finish, and detail work simply has to be seen to be believed.
His shop is located near Columbus, Texas and is open M-F from 9-5. If you get up that way give Bryan a call @ 979 251-1521. Welcome Bryan, and thanks for choosing the TPSA!

Congratulations to "The Pig", Larry and all the other top ten winners. I didn't get to make all the races, but when I was there, I was very impressed. I think all you guys are winners. I miss the driving, but you guys help keep the fire going. I think "DH" and family have done a great job keeping this club going. Keep up the good work! See you at the races. mb

TPSA inaugural race -- John Harrison, 08:09:10 09/29/02 Sun [2]
Well, the inaugural TPSA race at Lone Star Raceway in Sealy is in the books. We would like to thank those of you who came to race and those who made the trip to see what we are all about. We had a good show with some quality cars. Would have liked a few more cars for the first race, but the cars that made the trip put on a good showing.
The times ranged between 5.38 and 5.54 for each car's best ET. This made for good, close racing and at least two races were won on hole shots.
The final came down to Danny Liebham and Bucky Allison and was won by Danny with a 5.42. Bucky ran a faster but later 5.38.
We hope this event will display our intent to further heads-up racing in the South Texas area, and show the others with our type cars that they can come and compete with us.
The next event is the weekend ofOctober 26th, and will run in conjunction with the Texas Pro Mod Championship race at Sealy.
Anyone who is interested in racing, watching or our rules is invited to see our web site at www.texasprostocks.com. Don't forget the "s" or you won't find us.
Trophy's -- Gary, 01/14/09 9:02am
Individual race plaques or trophies are fine with us.We have been racing in TPSA since 2004,and what we really want is our FIRST WIN.(COMING IN '09)

NOT plaques -- Crew guy, 01/13/09 6:55pm
I wasn't able to attend the banquet, but I do have a suggestion for the 2009 season. I know these are hard times and if you run Texas Pro Stock you are definitely not running for the money but you are running for the love of the sport. My suggestion is that the Winner and Runner-Up at least receive a Trophy like those that were issued in the 2003-2005 Seasons.......this way the teams can have something to show for there win!
Banquet got ya all hyped up?...or just wanna burn some rubber & fuel?....maybe get a jump on the C-25 tune-up?...Then this is for you! Private test @ HRP (Baytown) on January 24th. Cost is $300 per car for the day and might be reduced depending on car count. For more info contact the "Champ" Joe Pigford, Seth @ Houston Raceway, or me.

We had a great turnout @ the Banquet although it seemed like half of Houston and the member body was sick. With 81 attendees it was packed...if anyone else had shown up it would have been SRO! We had three different photogs shootin' pics and these are a just a few...more as they come it.

Thank,s to all the members of TPSA -- Eddie Conrad, 11/26/08 7:56pm
Hadn,t had time to say hello to you guy,s since IKE,seem,s someone wanted all of the race car part,s in our shop and so far they have gotten away with part,s to build approx. 5 engines. The storm tore us up pretty bad in the dyno room and roof area, but thank,s to the generosity of all the guy,s in TPSA we now have a new dyno room and soon to be working.I would like to say from the entire Conrad family that we thank you guy's from the bottom of our hearts for the support that you guy's gave us in such an ordeal. I hope none of you have to go through a robbery like this. With the economy getting like it is we seem to be the target's for such thieves an predator's. Secure all of your race car parts, car, trailer, and hauler so this don't happen to you.Now on to better thing's.With Merve Davis leaving the Winscott team as driver,we were ask to drive Winscott's GTO,well naturally I didn't say no,to tell the truth I was shocked.I thought it would be mid year before we would have the camaro ready.Having put our motor in Danny Leibham's car at the last 2 event's we talked it over and decided to form a 2 car team with Danny and Gary.Hopefully in 2009 Team C.R.E. will be a dominant factor in TPSA,and hope to see all of you guy's at the banquet.Eddie Conrad,Conrad Racing Engines.
New team -- Gary Winscott, 11/26/08 5:22pm
First and foremost I want to thank my friend Merv Davis for all he did for team Winscott/Davis in 2008. Jason and I appreciate Merv and Deanna, and remain great friends. I would also like to thank Joe P.and Jack for their help. Now the news---2009 WINSCOTT/CONRAD (team WC )are in the hunt for a championship.Jason,Eddie jr.,Eddie and Gary have formed a new team that we expect to be in place for years to come, with EDDIE CONRAD driving the GTO and building the bullets.Looking forward to 2009. Good luck to all the teams. Gary
Boy it sure is quiet out there ! Somebody start a rumor or something. What's the latest on Team "O"s upcoming Xtreme 10.5 endeavor ??? You guy's done any testing yet ?? -- PIGMAN, 11/20/08 1:34pm
"SPEC" FUEL Many members have lobbied for this for a couple of years and with the technology changing so rapidly in the race fuel business now is the time to implement this change. As one example, most of you are familiar with the blends that have up to 5% nitro that are available and there are blends that cost $100 per gallon or more. In fact, there is a company out there that will blend any fuel you want. Under our current rules, these fuels are legal because they are "commercially available". For the 2009 season, VP C-25 will be the official fuel for the TPSA. Alcohol will not be allowed. VP was chosen because it's a well established company, C-25 is readily available, reasonably priced, and produces good power. TPSA does have a specific gravity checker so spot fuel checks can easily be performed. This change is not directed to penalize anyone but rather to address a very complex issue. This will simplify our rules, make them more efficient, and provide stability for the future.
Hopefully this early notice will give those members that have been using or working on a combo for any other fuel (C-44, Q-16, etc) ample time to regroup, and sell/trade any specialty items that have been acquired.
BANQUET:
As you know, Richard and Kathy Otwell extended the gracious offer to host the TPSA Championship Banquet this year at their home/shop. After contacting the member body, sponsors, and their spouses, the decision is to continue with the format that has been used for the last few years. The convenience of an "all inclusive" facility; ie, hotel rooms, lounge, banquet room, etc. was the deciding factor. We appreciate the Otwell's most generous offer and their many contributions, and participation in the TPSA.
The Banquet is planned to be held on January 10th, 2009. Rick is currently working on the details and we should have more info by early next week.
2009 Schedule
Most of the tracks have been contacted and a 12 race schedule seems to be in order. Houston Motorsports Park announced their dates of June 6th, August 8th, Oct 10th back in October, and Abilene, Denton, Evadale, and Edinburg are waiting on IHRA to announce their 2009 Schedule to finalize their events. Also, we are waiting to hear from Pine Valley. Dates will be posted here as soon as possible. Once again the TPSA season is slated to begin in March and end in October.
That's it for now. Hope everyone is having a happy and productive off season and remember to email or call with any questions, comments, or suggestions....

***Evadale Raceway 10/25*** turn out the lites on 2008...
-- pit pundit, 10/29/08 12:41am
For the last time in '08 the TPSA roadshow rolled into Evadale and the Ben Bruce Memorial Raceway. Fred and the track crew were excited about the track and air conditions and the consensus was that the magic ".50's" barrier would be broken under cool, calm and clear skies. It doesn't seem that long ago that David Hubbard first broke into the .70's, and Joe Pigford was first to the .60's, and it was very likely that someone would add a new record this evening. The players were Jeff Naiser once again getting the nod to drive Richard Otwell's ride, Larry Pearce in his new Cavalier (both NRC/Slick Rick powered), the newly crowned 2008 (Back2Back) Champion Joe Pigford in his brand new Stroupe GXP, and Aaron Hubbard in the fabled "Green Mamba" of the Pigford camp (Reher-Morrison power). The teams of Cowger/Wood, Randy Elliott, David Hubbard, Leibham/Conrad, Mitchell/Beck, and Winscott/Davis rounded out the field.
The first round of qualifying went off about 4:30 and the odds were better for a "50" later when the track and air cooled a bit. Naiser was #1 @ 4.613, Pearce was #2 @ 4.650, A. Hubbard #3 @ 4.662, and Pigford #4 @ 4.684 after one session was in the books. D. Hubbard's 4.773, M. Davis' 4.793, and Leibham's 4.800 completed the top half.
Session #2 and the conditions were prime for history to be made. After Naiser's out of the box 4.61 earlier it was a given for a "50" to be run...right?...nope, and that's why we don't race theories or should haves. Naiser slowed but still led the session with a 4.638, Pearce improved slightly to a 4.646, Pigford with the biggest move @ 4.652 and A Hubbard posted a 4.692. Well, no historic passes were made, at least not yet!
1st round... Pearce draws Pigford in what should be a showdown of gigantic proportions. #1 vs #2 in the points and very evenly matched. Pearce was uncharacteristically late and slowed dramatically about 2 seconds into the run. Pigford went to round 2 with a 4.66. The Pearce Team found an empty air bottle which prevented the air shifter from working, put the engine on the high side chip when it didn't shift, and put 'em in the box. There was a reported bright side...more on that later. 2nd pair featured Leibham/Conrad vs Winscott/Davis. Conrad and Leibham teamed up at the last race using the "Dude's" running gear in Danny's super clean Camaro and have been very happy with the results. Winscott/Davis, in the other lane, have been consistently in the 70's lately and Merv's driving has won them a couple of rounds. This time though, Leibham was out first and would take the holeshot win, 4.81 to a quicker but losing 4.78 for Davis. Merv and the team had an incident earlier in the pits but no damage or problems were reported as a result. 3rd pair had the new kids on the block (FORD GUYS at that) Mitchell/Beck tryin' to notch a win against Randy the "Dandy's" familiar Vette. Randy has been watching too much 10.5 racing and stood the Vette up on the bumper at the hit and was headed for the guardrail. Discretion being the better part of valor, Elliott wisely lifted and saved it for another day. He had also experienced a fire (carb backfire) earlier but received no damage. What was it with the fires...??!! Anywhooo....4th pair had Naiser in Otwell's Grand Am facing off with DH in the Cavalier. Remember Pearce's chances were lost because of an empty air bottle?..rumor in the pits was that error benefitted Naiser because HIS bottle was low/empty as well when they checked it and had it not been found, his shifter would have malfunctioned as well. At the hit DH was out first and would run a personal best in the Cavalier (4.740 @ 147.73) but Naiser would come steamin' by with a close to the "50's" 4.616 @ 151.77. Aaron Hubbard lined up with Rick Cowger and his 4.65 would advance over Rick's 4.83. Cowger and his crew had battled carb issues all day long and this was his first clean pass.
Round 2... Pigford stopped Leibham's run for the final with a 4.67 to 4.81 lap, and A. Hubbard ended Beck's day with a 4.66. The Mitchell/Beck Team were also having carb issues and weren't able to track 'em down. Still, they got their first round win and promise to be back for more next year. Naiser's 4.633 bye run finished the round.
Semi's... Naiser drew Pigford and surely we'd see the "50", or maybe two flash on the scoreboard? Wrong again me bucko, but Naiser would win the pair with another 4.63 @ 151.11 to "Pig's" 4.67 @ 149.25. "Double A" Hubbard utilized the bye run to advance to the final. Again, no "50" was posted and the moisture was starting to come in. The track was in perfect condition with many teams running personal best 60' times and et's but it was obvious the air was not gonna co-operate.
Finals... Naiser and Hubbard completed the burnouts, and began to stage. Naiser in the record holding Grand Am is a crafty "ol'" veteran with thousands of laps under his belt, and in the other lane waited "Double A" in the 2 time Championship winnin' "Mamba" crewed by Animal Jack himself...it don't get any better than this! The tree flashed green on both sides, Hubbard had saved his best rt (and best rt of the event) a .409, and was out first. Naiser, not to be outdone, posted a stellar rt of his own, a .417 and proceeded to close the books on the '08 Season with a win. The scoreboards said....Naiser 4.622 @ 151.72, Hubbard 4.682 @ 149.06. A super final by two great teams and competitors!
Our thanks to Mike Bruce, the Bruce family, Fred, Donna, Nikki (sp?), and the entire staff @ Evadale for allowing the TPSA part of their '08 schedule. The track prep was flawless and the hospitality, as usual, was second to none! Thanks again, and a tip of the cap to those great East Texas fans that come out to support the track and the TPSA.
We hope to see you all in '09!
PS...Special thanks to Aaron & Linda Cole for driving up and handling the pairings and logistics for the event. Great job, and the snacks weren't bad either....
***Season Finale @ Ben Bruce Memorial (Evadale) Pic's*** -- race report later...., 10/26/08 10:37pm
The Cowger/Wood Team was in the house
The "Ford Guys" Mitchell/Beck in the lanes
The Leibham/Conrad crew
The Winscott/Davis GTO continued to run .70's
The lanes for the 1st Qualifier
Larry Pearce's empty air bottle ended his day
Randy the "Dandy" Elliott provided some excitement
with a small carb fire...no damage was reported
Aaron "Double A" Hubbard got the dream call to drive
the "Mamba" for the Pigford Team. Winner Jeff Naiser is
in the background.
The newest piece in the Pigford arsenal...
a brand new Stroupe GXP. Joe finished as a semi finalist
Aaron in the "Mamba" was runner-up
Jeff Naiser/Team O made it two wins in a row to
finish their 2008 Season
Our thanks to the Bruce family, Fred, Donna, Nikki, and the entire staff @ Ben Bruce Memorial for an outstanding conclusion to the 2008 Season. We didn't see a ".50" run but it was close and it certainly wasn't the track conditions...it was just too humid. There were several personal bests run and all that and much more will be covered in the race report that is forthcoming.
Thanks again to everyone @ Evadale Raceway and those great East Texas fans for coming out and supporting the TPSA and we look forward to seeing you all next year.
Congrats to Team O and supershoe Jeff Naiser on your Win. Good job by Aaron Hubbard to take Joe Pigford's Mamba to the runner up spot. Pigford himself was the semi-finalist. -- where's all the results DH?, 10/26/08 6:11pm
TPSA Season Finale... This Saturday @ Evadale Raceway
-- DH, 10/24/08 1:05am
You couldn't order a better weather forecast than what we have for Saturday!...High's in the low 80's, sunny, calm, and 0% chance of moisture. Fred and his crew say the Ben Bruce Memorial track is ready and point to the multiple records that were set by the 10.5 guys in the past couple of weeks as proof. This is it, no second chances, no do overs, no mulligans, nada, zilch, zero, the top ten in points will be settled for the '08 Season after Saturday nite. You can't miss this one...will we see a historic .50's pass, will the "Pigpen" notch a victory with the new car, Pearce looks tough in his new ride, the "Naisernater" reportedly will be in the Team O car, Team Winscott is gettin' 'er sorted out, Team Wood/Cowger is coming off a big RU, and Hanson, DH, Elliott, the "Ford guys" Team Mitchell/Beck, the Conrad/Leibham team, and possibly a guest appearance by a familiar face, all plan to be there and will be gunnin' for the upset.
Spectators better get there early if you want a good spot on the fence for some side by side 4 second action...pro tree, no breakout, no power adder racing at it's Best!
Saturday gates open @ 12pm, open TT's @ 3, qualifying starts @ 4pm. TPSA slated for 4 & 5pm with eliminations to start @ 6pm. (Schedule subject to change)
***ATTN: MEMBERS!*** There is no Friday nite program @ Evadale, but I plan to be there Friday nite and TPSA members will be able to park... so come on out early, relax and get ready for Saturday. Evadale's flyer is posted above and you can click on it for the track homepage.... See ya in the lanes...
***STOLEN PARTS ALERT! *** -- Eddie, 10/22/08 6:26pm
EDDIE CONRAD'S ENGINE SHOP WAS BROKEN INTO LAST NITE. LOT OF MOTORS AND MOTOR PARTS STOLEN.COMPLETE 505 WITH BRAND NEW DART 345 HEADS STOLEN.
A LOT OF JESSEL STUFF, 3 DART SMALL BLOCKS, ONE BRAND NEW. EAGLE RODS, NICE CRANKS, TONS OF STUFF.
IF YOU ENCOUNTER SELLING PARTS TAHT DON'T BELONG TO THEM CALL EDDIE CONRAD 281-820-6262.
Race #11 is in the books and it was a doozy! The temperature wasn't as cool as was hoped for and the humidity was high but that didn't stop personal bests for a couple of members and a new TPSA ET record from being set. Dean Baker and the staff had the track in such terrific condition that it overcame the muggy weather and yielded outstanding 60' times and ET's.
Qualifying gave a hint of what was in store for the rest of the nite. When the smoke cleared, Jeff Naiser, driving Richard Otwell's "Team O" Grand Am was #1 @ 4.6439. #2 was Joe Pigford's 4.6618, #3 was Larry Pearce's 4.6865, #4 was David Hubbard's 4.7953, and Merv Davis, driving the Winscott family's GTO anchored the top 5 with a 4.827 lap. Clint Crownover, Danny Leibham (with the "Dude's" running gear), Rick Hanson, & Rick Cowger were in the .80's, and Randy Elliott, Billie Peters, and Beck/Mitchell Ford team (on hand for their second TPSA event) rounded out the field at an even dozen.
1st Round....DH was able to just get by Billie Peters .003 rt, Davis posted a 4.79 @ 144.42 to send the Beck/Mitchell team back to the trailer, Naiser used a 4.63 to advance over Crownover's 4.84, Pearce improved to a 4.65 in his win over the "Dandy" Elliott, Leibham's Conrad power advanced with a 4.80 to 4.84 lap by Hanson, and the upset of the round was Rick Cowger in the Wood/Cowger entry getting past Joe Pigford in the Mamba. Joe and Animal Jack decided to run just one car out of the "Pigpen" at this event and the "Mamba" got the call. Pig's new Stroupe GXP was on the grounds and will undoubtedly get some action in the near future. Back to the race...Pig was .415 on the tree, but when his car didn't shift into high gear Cowger was able to drive by with a 4.88 @ 140.45. Cowger also collected the "Lidiak Motorsports" Bounty with the win.
2nd round....Merv Davis and the Winscott's have been chasing gremlins for weeks in the team's GTO. Eddie Conrad was on hand Friday nite for some input and they decided to change converters for the race along with some chassis adjustments. The hard work paid off with a holeshot victory 4.808 @ 144.32 over DH's late 4.794 @ 146.10. Something must have been in the air as Larry Pearce would also miss the tree in the next pair and his 4.65 @ 150.65 couldn't hold up to Naiser's .417rt, 4.61 @ 149.11. The last pair saw Cowger facing off with Leibham and this one was over at the hit as Leibham got out of shape and lifted to watch Cowger's 4.88 get the win.
Semi's....Cowger drew the bye, launched and shut off, saving it for the final. The Davis/Winscott team gave it all they had but their 4.79 fell short to another 4.61 from Naiser. Congrats to the Winscott team for an outstanding effort.
Final....Cowger was out first and ran a consistent 4.88 but "TEAM O", Jeff Naiser, NRC, Slick Rick, and the rest of the crew were not to be denied tonite, and the scoreboard lit up with a new TPSA ET record of 4.6075! Congratulations to them and all of the TPSA teams for a great event.
Our thanks to the HMP fans, the Baker family, John Mandabach, and the staff @ HMP. Special recognition to Dean Baker and the guys that prep the track...it was simply perfect all nite! This was our last event for the '08 Season @ HMP and we thank them for the continued support and hospitality they extend to the TPSA and we're looking forward to the 3 events that they will host in '09.
On a personal note: Thanks to Laurie Crownover for filling in for Kay and doing an outstanding job, Eddie Conrad, Donald the "Boxman" Hughes, and Aaron Hubbard for helping out around the scales, and to Mark Bramhall who flew in from Dallas to help out where needed and to give moral support to all the teams. Also, it was good to see Ben & Donna Worley checking out the action, and AD Rigmaiden was spotted in the pits as well.
Pictures from HMP are finally up on my site Sorry I was really busy last week and didn't get a chance until last night.. Here's the link -- Dave Donalson, 10/18/08 8:46am http://www.dreamweavervega.com/10.html

Team O, Team NRC & Slick Rick, and Larry Pearce pose in the winner's circle. Pearce(w) right, Naiser (ru) left.
The cast of charactors..
Future head porter in his first Winner's Circle?
New member Roy Pigford and the "Green Mamba" qualified #1
Joe Pigford was a semi-finalist in the new Stroupe GXP
The Blue Oval was back in the TPSA wars. Jeff Mitchell, his brothers Rich & Mike, and driver Bill Beck in the house...
Thanks again to the Bailey's and staff @ PVR, the fans, and the eleven teams that made the event. Many of these folks were recovering from "IKE" and it took a great effort to make it happen. The long distance tow award goes to Team Abbott who came from Crane, Texas. Special mention to the Mitchell team whose driver flew in from St. Louis to participate.
The results, points, and homepage have been updated for your viewing pleasure, and watch for more pics and reports
to be posted later.
Larry Pearce defeated Jeff Naiser (who was driving the Team O flagship) in an all NRC/Slick Rick powered final. This was the first race for Pearce in the car he purchased to replace the "Longhorn" that was damaged earlier in the year.
#1 qualifier (4.671) was newcomer Roy Pigford, driving the "Green Mamba" and brother Joe locked up the 2008 TPSA Championship with a semi-final finish in the debut of his beautiful new Stroupe GXP. Both are powered by bullets by Reher-Morrison.
Pearce moved to the #2 spot, and Crownover moved into the #3 position with two races remaining on the schedule. Full race reports, pics, points updates, results and more will be posted soon...
Thanks to Billy Kestner for the outstanding track prep and for the extra effort in keeping the track perfect late into the nite with plenty of moisture in the air. The et's in the final were 4.66 to a 4.65...that says all there is to say about the stellar track conditions. This was our last race of the season at Pine Valley and we thank the Bailey family, Billy and all of the staff @ PVR, and the fans of East Texas. Hope to see you all in '09.
OK, boys & girls....IT'S RACING TIME! -- DH, 09/26/08 6:01pm
Weather forecast looks great and the ol' hotrods should be flying tomorrow at Pine Valley Raceway. The track was groomed last weekend and got rave reviews from a large group of racers....it'll only be better this weekend. Come on up, it doesn't matter if you're ready or not there's no better place to test and no other track is open this weekend in the Houston area.
Gates open @ 4pm tomorow but TPSA race teams will be allowed in early. We'll be there late tonite so give me a ring on the cell if you need me. See ya in the lanes...
That's right, the Blue Oval crowd will have a TPSA entry to root for starting this Saturday at Pine Valley Raceway! The Ford faithful haven't had anyone to pull for since Morgan's Mustang, (and it was a hybrid with a BBC for power)... but this one is all Ford and ready for some shake down passes and tunin' up for next year when they plan to make a full assault with a new bullet, also a Ford.
Spoke with one of the principals tonite and they're a family based team lookin' to come out have some fun, make some laps, and oh yeah, hurt some Chevy feelings along the way...LOL. Welcome aboard to Jeff Mitchell, his driver/partner, Bill Beck, and Jeff's brother who is the engine/chassis guy. Jeff also said they'd bring plenty of family to the races as well; nieces, nephews, wives, kids, etc. Sounds like our kind of folks.
Another new car that will make it's TPSA debut is the brand new Stroupe GXP out of the "PigPen". Joe Pigford will turn over the venerable "Green Mamba" to brother Roy and Joe will be wheelin' the beautiful new ride. Security has been double tuff and we haven't been able to secure any spy shots but it is gorgeous!
Only three races remain in the '08 season and the action is heatin' up with only 26 points separating 2nd thru 6th place and it's mathematically possible for the points leader Pigford to be overtaken. Don't miss it...Gates open @ 4pm.

Howdy from Rednek Kreations, -- Billy Joe Bob & Ricky Ray Bob, 09/18/08 9:29pm
Welp it's been awhile since we checked in with our racin' buddies and hope ya'lls fine after the storm and all. Us redneks would rather look at pics than read so..
we waz sittin' around the condo jus' lookin' for something to do
an it wuz hot so we went down to the swing
purty soon we wuz in the hot tub talkin' bout how tough the times wuz
and this feller came by needin' to haul a bull but he ain't got a trailer. No problem for the Rednek Kreations crew. The next pics is some fine workmanship and getrdone attitude. We know Crownover's sell feed, and Hubbard and Winscott are in the cattle bidness...let us know if you need a cheep bullhauler..
After this job, we had plenty of BS to talk about!
Disclaimer: no bulls or rednecks were injured in these pictures!
-- DH, 09/18/08 6:08pm
Pine Valley Raceway in Diboll escaped with only minor damage from "IKE" and will be open this weekend. Billy and the crew have been cleaning, scraping, and spraying the track to get it ready and the track surface should be perfect for the TPSA race September 27th.
***Storm Update*** I've been in contact with many of the members and most substained minor damage with power outages. The exception is Eddie Conrad's shop which lost part of the roof and a section of the back of the shop. I believe everyone has power at their house today except for the Winscott's, and Merv's business, Texas Performance, is still without power. Landmark Chevrolet is without power so Cowger hasn't been able to work, Elliott just got power back last nite and has some overhead door work to do at his shop. Pigford and Hanson said they're in good shape and Benham said that "Team O" is too. Most of us haven't had the hotrods out in quite a while and I bet everyone is ready for a little R&R and would enjoy burnin' some rubber and makin' some laps @ PVR. Hope to see ya there!
Gates open @ 4pm, TT's @ 5pm, and elims slated for 8pm.
***Hurricane Ike*** -- DH, 09/15/08 11:55am
Hope everyone made it through the storm ok. The phone service isn't the best but I've managed to talk to a few of the members; some came through without any problems, and others have minor damage and/or no power. The media says there are still widespread power outages and supplies (groceries, fuel, batteries, etc) are in high demand. If there's anything we can do to help, give me a call or post it here.
-- DH, 09/10/08 12:42pm
Just got off the phone with Fred @ Evadale and he said the great spectators of East Texas want to see one more TPSA show before the end of the season. October 25th (at Evadale) will be the final race of the '08 season! This will replace the September 6th race that was cancelled due to the threat of Hurricane Gustav. With the points battle coming down to the wire every race is critical, and we're trying to get the full schedule in. IMPORTANT: Should any of the three remaining races be rained out there will not be a re-schedule date set!
Please contact me if you have a scheduing conflict with the Evadale race (October 25th). See ya in the lanes...
The TPSA event scheduled for next Saturday, September 6th @ Evadale has been cancelled due to Gustav in the Gulf.
The Evadale Fire Department and Ambulance service is already on emergency standby and cannot leave the station. This forced Fred and the Bruce family to cancel today's race and it's impossible to predict what if any services will be available next week. As with any hurricane the uncertainty of where Gustav will make landfall and exactly when next week it will hit dictates the best decision for everyone involved is to cancel the September 6th race.
Evadale has a couple of dates available in mid October for us to re-schedule this event and the details will be worked out asap. Any new information will be posted here.
If you have any questions or need further info shoot me an email or give me a call.
Sunday @ Baytown.. -- Agent 660, 08/25/08 5:34pm
HRP had a few TPSA cars out Sunday. Pearce made his third trip to Houston trying to get a hit on his car. Short version is - 5 60' hits and it's back to home in Fulton Texas with the rear suspension being given some changes. Pigford's got brand new pipe - the Stroupe GXP is awesome! Pig pen reported typical new car blues - racepak will get a call and "Animal Jack" appears to also have changes ordered to get the GXP up to "Mamba" status. Cowger and Woods were out trying some stuff, but not really sure what. Never saw them get the saw out, but they still are not pleased with their performance to date. One thing for sure, the C&W team won't quit working on it! Gotta go before someone traces this post!

Houston Motorsports Park announces 3 TPSA races for '09...
June 6th August 8th October 10th
-- ., 08/23/08 10:37pm For the sixth consecutive season Houston Motorsports Park will host the TPSA as part of the Dragstrip special event schedule. Our thanks and appreciation to the Baker family, John Mandabach, the staff of HMP, and the fans for allowing us to be part of their 2009 program. The links below will take you to HMP's homepage or their complete schedule for next year.
There's just three races left in the '08 season and the rumors are flyin' about new teams, new cars, and new alliances for the '09 season. Some of these are still in the negotiation stages, some are of the double throw down, top secret, don't tell anyone variety, but here's a couple of teasers....Which former NHRA Comp Elim driver has indicated he's goin' TPSA racing in '09? (hint: it's not the Talley/Nickens team who are still tying to get out before the end of this season) and which Houston engine builder has been asked to consider driving a TPSA car in '09?
One thing we can reveal is the "Pig Pen" ain't gonna be the same. The "Pigman" has evolved into a wild boar and the pic above is just a hint of what's coming to root up the playground (it's already with "Animal" Jack @ the shop @ Houston). Word has it the "Mamba" will still be around and there will be two "Pig's" for the wolves or anyone else to contend with next year.
And props to our very own Chad Hanson (holding the trophy in the pic below) for winning the 6.60 index at the last race. For those of you that don't know Chad he is a past TPSA Rookie of the Year, and Sportsman of the Year recipient as well. Heck of a shoe but the ol' man has been hoggin' the TPSA car for the last couple of seasons....LOL. Congrats Chad!...

Twelve teams braved the heat and humidity that was present Saturday for the "Sudden Impact" event @ HMP. The cooler, drier conditions that the weatherman had predicted earlier in the week failed to materialize but that didn't keep Dean Baker and the crew from having the track in tip top condition.
A brief recap of the action...Team O's president, Richard Otwell was back in action after missing a couple of events and was #1 qualifier with his NRC/Slick Rick powered Grand Am @ 4.705 147.88. Points leader Joe Pigford moved his Reher-Morrison equipped machine into the #2 spot with a 4.73 @ 146.91. Larry Pearce, another Team O player, was on site with his new Cavalier but ran out of time making final preparations and would not make the field. The Salinas/Perez team was also in the pits with their GTO...they have sold the Cavalier that they raced @ Edinburg. Team Winscott and shoe Merv Davis were back with their GTO, and regulars, Conrad, Cowger, Crownover, Elliott, Hanson, Hubbard, and Peters rounded out the ladder.
Richard Otwell, crewed by Pearce, Ashe, and Owens ran low et of each round on his way to the final where he met the Animal Jack tuned "Green Mamba" of Pigford. Team "O's" 4.6955 @ 149.55 couldn't run down the holeshot 4.7054 @ 147.93 posted by the "Pigman".
Eddie the "Dude" Conrad crashed his venerable '97 Camaro in the Semi's when it drifted out of the groove and made a hard left into the guardrail. The track emergency crew was immediately on the scene and Eddie was out of the car and OK. Eddie and Jr have made some great progress this year and if you've got a spare chassis gathering dust give Eddie a ring at the shop.
The full race report, more pics, & points updates will be posted soon....on the points subject, I was asked if Pigford had the '08 Championship sewed up yet and the answer is NO! #2 man Otwell, Pearce, and Conrad all have a mathematical chance...more detail on that later.
Our thanks to the Baker family, John Mandabach, and the entire staff at HMP for another stellar event @ HMP.

The Cowger/Woods team
Randy Elliott continues to improve
The Salinas/Perez team's GTO
The Winscott GTO "shoed" by Merv Davis
Billie Peters was goin' for the Lidiak "Treeman" award with a .003 rt 1st round
The Hanson family had a productive outing. Rick went 2 rounds in TPSA and son Chad won the 6.60 Index class
The "Hill Country Boyz" Clint Crownover (top) and DH (bottom) each went two rounds. Donald the "Boxman" Hughes was in the house lending support & hopes to be out soon.
The points race is heatin' up with only three races left on the '08 schedule. Otwell, Pearce, and Conrad all have a chance mathematically to be #1, but the defending series champ Pigford must lose 1st round at the remaining events to open the door. The spread from #2 Otwell (282) to #6 DH (256) is very tight and #3 Conrad, #4 Crownover, and #5 Pearce are sandwiched in the middle. The final three races are gonna be a war! Stay tuned.
" HMP " results -- Mark Bramhall (" Very Impressed"), 08/11/08 3:30pm

LP, I just saw the video of your crash and I am truely thankful to hear you are well. It looked bad and we are glad to hear that you are OK. -- Mr.T, 07/28/08 7:47pm
Well guys, since I had no takers for Vermont, I am now in Middleville, NY, there is one nice track here. They are giving us the same deal as Vermont. This track is 4 hours closer, gas is the same price. So.... what do u say. Are you in or Not? I know the hill country boyz and Pigford, they are not scared. Weather is still in the 60s, this will set some new records for the Pro Stock Teams, Plenty of parking here on the dairy farm. Cows won't even mooo or bother your rigs. -- Boxman (Donald), 07/25/08 10:27pm
"Edinburgh" -- Mark Bramhall, 07/23/08 7:28pm
Well, I have to start this off by saying, Larry I am so glad you are ok. As an ex-racer, we never want to see anyone get hurt. Take care, and get back out there A.S.A.P. I also want to congratulate Lance on his first win,(good job). Congrats also goes out to Rick on your runner up finish. All you guys are doing a great job. I miss driving, and I miss being with you guys at the track. Hope to see you all soon. mb
The good folks over at Texasdragracing.com aka "The Dog Pound" have posted hundreds of photo's of last week's TPSA race @ Edinburg. Mike and the guys also have some video posted with more to follow. Be sure to click on the link below (then click on the "forum" button) to check 'em out....and Mike invites you to save your favorites by "right clicking" on them! Thanks to Mike and the crew at TDR for covering our event.
Ok boys & girls, the points page, schedule page, and homepage have been updated for your viewing pleasure. Something interesting that I bet most of you don't know is that so far in '08 we've had 5 different winners..Pigford with 4 wins, A Hubbard with 2, and Otwell, Pearce, and Abbott with 1 each. But did you know there has not been a repeat Runner Up this year? That's right, 9 races, 9 different ru's. Davis, DH, Otwell, Pearce, Naiser, Cowger, Crownover, Pigford, and Hanson have each reached the final this year. Oh, and the engine builders/cylinder head guru's that I am aware of are: Reher-Morrison, Naiser w/heads by Slick Rick, Houston Engine & Balancing, Abbott Racing Engines, RED/lump, Conrad Racing Engines, Self Racing, and Westside (I think). Now don't bash me if I left your guy out...just get on here and post the correct info...LOL. All in all makes for some pretty good racin' don't ya think! -- DH, 07/22/08 3:30pm
Hey guys I am in Vermont scoping out new tracks for TX Pro Stocks. Talked to several tracks, they have offered us a deal we can't pass up. The weather is awesome, high today 66. So who is in ???? Come on, fuel is only $5.05 for diesel, reg. is $4.25. Only takes 2 days of hard driving to get here. What a deal!!!!!!!! Come on up.. (LOL) -- Boxman (Donald), 07/23/08 7:43am
Race #8 of the '08 season found the TPSA troupe headed due south for Edinburg International Racetrack. This was the first trip to the Rio Grande Valley and would add an interesting experience to the "Texas Two Step", or "Waltz across Texas" that has defined the schedule for '08.
Several teams rolled into the facility early Friday, and two made some test hits to check it out. Any questions about track condition, prep, or the performance the teams and fans could expect at this venue were quickly answered when the "Pigman" unleashed a 4.69 out of the box. The Abbott's followed with a career best 60' time and a 4.89 with the truck! Things were gonna be just fine for Saturday nite's show....
Eleven teams made the trip and were joined by local racer Roy Perez driving the Salinas family's Cavalier to make an even dozen entries. The Salinas' wanted to be a part of the TPSA event held in their hometown and had ordered a TPSA legal Schmidt powerplant, installed it earlier in the week, and rented the track to make some shake down runs.
The sun was getting low on the horizon, clear skies, a lil' breeze and the clock said 7:30pm....perfect conditions in mid July for the first qualifying hit...let's get this party started! When qualifying was completed, Larry Pearce's 4.68 was on top, followed by Team O's 4.69, and Joe Pigford's 4.70. ***A couple of notes here: (1) Richard Otwell, team O's owner & driver could not make this event, but he sent his rig and super crew Rick McConathy, Jeff Owens, and AJ Ashe would be behind the wheel. (2) The elapsed times reported for this event may not be 100% accurate as a copy of the official time sheets was not available. Feel free to correct any mistakes that may be made.***End of disclaimer.
Eddie & Daretta Conrad, with help from Hannah, were handling the drawings (pairings) for this event and it was a fine job they did. Time for 1st round and Ashe advanced over Conrad. Conrad had run a best of 4.82. Rick Hanson's Corvette drove around a slight holeshot by Rick Cowger in the Woods Camaro, Clint Crownover's redlite in the Firebird negated a 4.85 and sent the local, Perez to the next round. The "West Texas Flash" who just recently enjoyed a birthday (believe it was his 25th?) Lance Abbott drove his S-10 into round 2 with a victory over Randy the "Dandy" Elliott's Corvette. Randy's still sneakin' up on the tune up for the new bullet and ran a career best 4.96 here. Next up, David Hubbard in the Cavalier left first but the "Green Mamba", "Brick House", or whatever you want to call the machine of Joe Pigford (just call it bad...LOL) came stormin' past to move into round 2. The next pair had #1 qualifier Larry Pearce in the familiar Longhorn Cavalier squaring off with the Firebird of Billie Peters. At the hit Peters broke something in the tranny area and Pearce was drifting out of the groove. The end result was Pearce crossing the center stripe and making contact with the guardrail. Larry was ok and out of the car before the emergency crew arrived on the scene (and the track crew was right there...very quick response time...great job guys!) but the car had sustained substantial damage.
2nd round once again proved why we race on the track and not time slips. Abbott drew Team O and his 4.90 got the win as Ashe rattled the tires at the hit and was forced to give it up. In the next pair, Hanson also had to be rated the underdog against the current points leader Pigford (crewed by the (in)famous "Animal Jack"...LOL). Joe's night would end as the Mamba moved out of the groove and Pigford shut it off early to watch Hanson's 4.91 move into the final. Hanson also collected the Lidiak Motorsports "Bounty Hunter" $$$ with his victory over "Pig". The local team of Salinas/Perez had a competition bye into the semi's when Peters could not make the call.
Semi's had Hanson draw the bye (4.91) and Abbott would face the quicker Cavalier of Salinas & Perez. Both cars staged, the "Flash" was out first and would go to his first final with a 4.90 to 4.85 holeshot victory over the hometown entry. Thanks to the Salinas family & Roy Perez for coming out and supporting the TPSA. It was a very impressive first outing for a new combination and we hope to see you again up "North" in the Houston area at the remaining TPSA races.
The final was run around 3am due to Pearce's incident and a couple of oil downs that had occurred. This was not a factor however, as the sky was clear and no dew or moisture was present....nothing on the racecars windows or seats of the golfcarts...we're not used to those conditions that late....LOL. Anyway, it looked to be a great final as the cars were very evenly matched and both drivers are very consistant at the 'tree. The burnouts were completed, and Hanson and Abbott lit the prestage bulbs together. They both took a little time rollin' in to stage, but staging was completed and the motors came up. As he stabbed the throttle, Hanson's black 'Vette lurched out of the beams, sending Lance to victory lane for the first time and father Kenneth launched into the air, arms above his head! Hanson has been to the final numerous times and has several race wins, but it has to be special for the "Flash" to win in his very first final. Congrats to them both and to all of the teams.
Our first "Valley" experience was very enjoyable due mostly to the hospitality that we were shown by the track owner, Julio Cantu, the track manager Isaac Ebrom, the staff @ EIR, and the fans. The track is fast, and the facility is well prepared, and well managed...and the food's good too. Thanks Isaac for the super taco's! If you have an opportunity to visit and race Edinburg be sure to make the trip. You won't be disappointed!
At the line for the final
Abbott at the scales with Hanson lookin' on..EIR worked hard to get
these installed in time for our race and they worked perfectly...

The Lidiak Bounty was collected @ PVR and it's posted again on the points leader, Joe Pigford. Isaac from Edinburg has been in contact with most of the racers to confirm their hotel requirements, the size of their rig in order to arrange parking, and to answer any questions or provide info as needed. Our thanks to Isaac and the folks @ EIR for going above and beyond to provide a unique and enjoyable experience for the TPSA's first trip to the Valley!

Corvette -- Travis (Lucky)Leach, 07/ 9/08 4:49pm
I am just wondering if any of you guys can tell me where to buy a complete fiberglass front clip for my 63-67 Corvette. I did notice that Mr. Hubbards has a new one on his Corvette and maybe he can tell me where he bought it. Again Thanks for the Space. Cell # 713-591-1169
Just got off the phone with Mr. Isaac Ebrom with the latest details about the race @ Edinburg on the 19th. They just committed several thousand dollars to a TV promo for the upcoming race and cement crews are preparing the site for the installation of the scale that they hope to have ready by the 19th. In addition, Isaac will be contacting TPSA members that have committed to, or have expressed interest in, participating in this event to extend his personal invitation, answer any questions, gather hotel info, etc. In the meantime, Isaac again encouraged members to contact him @ 956 318 0355 with any questions you might have.
We currently have 8 members that have committed to the race, including the top 6 in the points standing. Pigford, Pearce, the Otwell team, Crownover, Conrad, DH, Elliott, and Hanson will be there... and the Abbott's, Billie Peters, and the Woods/Cowger team are likely to round out the field. The Abbott's would win the long distance award hands down as their trip would be about 550 miles one way! There is a rumor that won't go away about a local (south Texas) car that's coming to enjoy some heads-up racing as well.
It's shapin' up to be a great event with a large group of spectators that are ready to see some TPSA side by side, heads up, no stinkin' breakout, doorslammer action. Make your plans to join us there!
NOTE: If you have any questions about the event, the facility, hotel info, etc. please call Isaac @ 956 318 0355 or visit Edinburg's website for general info (a link is at the top of this page). For TPSA info regarding this event, please contact David Hubbard @ 512 756 6384. Thanks,

EDINBURG EVENT -- Isaac Ebrom, 07/ 3/08 9:41pm
Since this will be the first visit for The Texas Pro Stock Association to Edinburg International Racetrack, I just wanted to give everyone the basic information about the track as well as offer my insight to our South Texas drag-strip.
The track is located 5 hours southwest of Houston. Take Highway 59 south until you get to Highway 77 (Highway 59 turns into Highway 77 outside Victoria). Take Highway 77 south until you get to Highway 285 (the town of Riviera) where you will turn west (right). Take Highway 285 until you get to Highway 281 (the town of Falfurrias) where you will turn south (left). Follow Highway 281 south until you get to the racetrack, which is located on the eastside of the highway (your left).
We are having a Bracket Race on Friday Night July 18 and Saturday July 19. Pro Stock members are welcome to test and/or compete on Friday Night; nevertheless, we will still have 10 paved pit spots with power and water reserved for all drivers that just show up on Saturday. Overnight camping is available on Friday and Saturday! Friday’s schedule: Gates open at 7:00pm, Time Trials 8:00pm, Eliminations at 10:15pm. Saturday’s schedule: Gates open at 5:00pm, Pro Stock Qualifying at 7:30pm.
I understand the standard practice for most your events is for 2 crew members to get in for free with each car. Edinburg International Racetrack would like to extend the offer to 4 crew members. In addition to the extra crew members, we are also offering a free hotel room to Pro Stock members. Unless notified otherwise, we will reserve 6 non-smoking, double bed rooms on Saturday July 19.
If any drivers/crew members need more rooms or have any more questions, Please feel free to contact us at (956) 318-0355. Addition information about the track plus photos and videos can be found on our website www.edinburgracetrack.com

***OK boys and girls, gather 'round for the Pine Valley Raceway report***
Winner & Lidiak Motorsports "Bounty Hunter" Aaron Hubbard and crew
-- pit pundit, 07/ 2/08 1:07am
So much stuff goin' on @ Pine Valley Raceway that I really don't know where to start, so we'll start at the beginning. All of us had our fingers crossed Friday nite as the weatherman predicted a 40% chance of the wet stuff for race day. Saturday rolled around and it was partly cloudy, hot, humid, and a little breezy. Thankfully the forecast was right (60% chance of NO rain) and as the sun went down it actually was pleasant for late June in the Piney Woods of East Texas.
Both qualifying runs were run with the very hot track temps common for this time of year....one team reported 150* track temp on their first hit and it only cooled off a few degrees for the 2nd lap. When the smoke cleared, Team Otwell's NRC, Slick Rick powered entry led the pack with AJ Ashe in the chair @ 4.737 @ 148.08. Richard had other committments and had to sit this one out. #2 Qualifier was the familiar Reher-Morrison machine of Joe Pigford. "Pig" carded a 4.759 @ 147.20. The next 7 cars were in a bunch from 4.861 to 4.937. Randy Elliott was still making check out runs on the new bullet and came in @ #10. Missing this weeks action was Donald Hughes, the Abbott's, Billie Peters, James Talley, Jeff Storrs/Dan Leibham, and Larry Pearce. An unconfirmed report floating thru the pits was that Erica Enders had been contacted about filling in for Pearce but the deal didn't happen.
First round was a battle of reaction time. Two years ago a .450 lite was better than average but those days are long gone! 1st pair had Aaron Hubbard vs Rick Hanson. Aaron and Rick seem to draw each other often... particularly @ PVR. This was the Hanson's first race back after missing a couple to have the ol' bullet freshened up and it was great to have them back. Aaron has enjoyed a lot of success @ PVR and Rick's luck has been consistantly bad at this venue. This round would be no different as Rick's car wouldn't fire after the burnout and gave "Double A" a freebie to round 2. The Hanson's found a broken fuel pump wire in the pits, repaired that, then the starter solenoid gave up the ghost. It just wasn't meant to be for them on this nite! 2nd pair up was Pigford against the Woods/Cowger team. The Woods Team had run some spectacular 60' times at the last event but were struggling to repeat them here. Cowger's .419 rt couldn't hold off the "Mamba's" top end charge and "Pig" moves on. The next pair had Eddie Conrad lining up with HMP's runner-up, Clint Crownover. Conrad's .4010 rt 4.836 sent Clint's improving 4.85 to the trailer. In addition, Conrad's .4010 replaced Clint's .4014 for the lead in the Lidiak "Treemaster" Challenge. Next up was the Winscott Team with "Spike" Davis at the controls vs Randy the "Dandy Elliott. Remember what I was saying about rt's? How about a .4058 4.854 for the winner Davis to Dandy's .4041 4.98! Even with the round loss, Randy was tickled to become an OFFICIAL member of the 4 second club. Congratulations to Randy, his family, and crew..they've been working hard to get there. The final pair of the first round featured Ashe in Otwell's ride vs David Hubbard. DH's .4082rt 4.855 was no match for the impressive 4.698 of the Naiser/Slick Rick combo. Clint Crownover won the drawing for the Otwell/Pigford "Racer X" gas card.
2nd round first pair proved to be the race of the event as Pig drew the Otwell Team. Everything was normal until the starter threw the autostart switch and it didn't arm the tree. The staff had been having some issues with the switch, and had replaced it (thanks to Eddie Conrad) but as a precaution placed a "backup" staffer in the tower to arm the system if necessary. The end result was a longer than normal "autostart" tree but nothing unusual for the veterans of the class who cut their teeth racin' with Buster Couch and Walter of NHRA fame long before the days of autostart. Back to the race....both motors were on the chip, the tree came down, both lanes green. Most of the rail birds had their money on the NRC bunch but hold up... the "Pigman" moved first and held on for a holeshot win, 4.74 to a quicker but losing 4.73! Pigford's data recorder solved all of the speculation of just how long/slow the tree was. It showed he was on the converter 2.8 seconds. A normal autostart for Pigford shows 1.2 to 1.5 seconds. An extra second waitin' on the tree CAN seem like an eternity but dealing with the unexpected is just part of racin'. 2nd pair and another unusual happening just after the 4 stage bulbs were lit. Merv Davis would lurch forward, turning out the top bulb which automatically advanced Conrad into the semi's. Aaron's luck would continue as he drew the bye.
Semi's pitted Aaron and Ol' Blue with his Houston Engine & Balancing power against the Conrad Racing crew. Yet another interesting chain of events as after staging something happened to Eddie and his Camaro rolled several feet beyond the tree, handing Aaron a ticket to the final to meet up with "Animal" Jack and the "Pigman". Pigford recorded a 4.71 on his bye run.
In the lanes before the final some good natured ribbing and smack talk was taking place. Pigford asked Aaron if it was true he'd had a .410rt the last 3 passes in a row. AK said yup, and he figured he needed a better one than that AND a heap of luck to see the win lite come on in his lane after this next lap. Pig just laughed and said let's go racing Boys. Both cars completed the burnouts, staged cleanly, got on the chip, and let go of the button. The race was over and Aaron had his 2nd win of the season, and collected the Lidiak "Bounty" $$ when the red lite was glowing in the "Mamba's" lane...by only .003! With Aaron's busy work schedule and travel he has made only 3 races and won't be able to run a full '08 season, but he's sure made the most of it so far.
Our thanks again to the fans of East Texas, the Bailey family, Billy Kestner and all of the staff of Pine Valley Raceway for allowing the TPSA to be a part of your program in '08. The track was great all day considering the heat and after the sun went down and the track temp dropped to 100* it provided some very quick runs and personal bests. Also, thanks to the teams that took a chance on the weather, braved the heat, and made a great show.
Note:** Kay wanted to acknowledge the help that Laurie Crownover and Chad Hanson provided during the event as it made her job much easier.
"Congratulations" -- Mark Bramhall, 07/ 1/08 6:42pm
Congrats to Aaron on his win, looks like the apple didn't fall to far from the tree. I guess the old man was a good teacher. Congrats to the "Pig" on his runner up. How many finals is it now? Keep up the good work guys. Can't wait for more pics and info. mb
