***Roy Pigford Wins...Abbott runner-up***

Hard to believe, but the winter “vacation” is already history for the TPSA teams. No more silly season rumors, coffee shop bench racing, or message board chatter… it’s race time and the 2010 season kicked off at the “Concrete Palace”, aka Dallas Raceway, this past Saturday.

Friday nite was bracket nite and no test & tune was available, but by the time the gates closed there were already seven TPSA teams on the grounds. Sammy told the troops that he would have the track ready for action around 3pm if any of the teams wanted to get an extra hit or two in before the official qualifying sessions.

As expected, Sammy and the crew had the track in perfect condition the next day… so good in fact that a couple of the cars that made early hits found too much traction available. By the time official time trials started everyone had their basic setups figured out.

New cars, new paint, car swaps, new members, we had it all. Pearce’s NRC/Slick Rick Championship flagship Cavalier was now Back n Black, Otwell’s, also with NRC/Slick Rick under the hood, stunning, long anticipated, new GXP was in the house, the star of pre season testing, the Cowger/Wood Grand Am had a new “wrap” that really looks nice and a new Slick Rick intake for their NRC power, the “new guys” Robinson & Wilkerson were there in the pristine ‘Bird, the Abbott’s, Abbott's Racing Heads entry S-10, was there with new power and a host of other top secret changes, the Talley & Nickens team Camaro was sportin’ new Slick Rick heads, Hanson was present with the crowd favorite black Vette, also with new hp from Marvin Shaw/Marc Kanarik, Crownover was in the Cavalier with his new Houston Engine & Balancing entry with heads he purchased from Gene & Tommy Platt. Slick Rick had done a set of heads and intake for the Platt’s, but Gene’s accident has postponed the debut of their new ‘Vette so the heads were offered to Clint. Both Gene & Tommy were in attendance crewing for Donald Hughes. It was great to see Gene looking fit and recovered from his accident. The “PigPen” was back with fresh Reher-Morrison bullets in the GXP & Grand Am… the newest Stroupe GXP isn’t in the "PigPen" yet, the Winscott/Conrad’s, Conrad Racing Engines, GTO was ready to rock, Aaron Hubbard broke out Ol’ Blue for rare appearance, and the “Boxman” Donald Hughes' Baretta rounded out the 13 car field. Donald had Slick Rick build an intake over the winter and do some dyno work and he had picked up some hp as well.

After both rounds of qualifying were in the books it looked like this: J Pigford 4.57 @152.45, Roy Pigford 4.59 @ 151.46, R. Cowger 4.59 @ 151, L Pearce 4.63 @ 151.22, R Otwell 4.64 @ 150.48, B Nickens 4.65 @ 149.78, C Crownover 4.69 @149.28, L Abbott 4.72 @ 147.04, E Conrad 4.741 @ 145.45, D Hughes 4.749 @ 147.58, C Hanson 4.78 @144.09, A Hubbard 4.79 @144.35, Jr Wilkerson getting’ some seat time and making laps @ 5.13, 136.22.

1st round..NRC/Slick Rick teammates, Cowger & Otwell roll into the water. Otwell conducted the drawing for pairing so no conspiracy theory here…. Cowger moves first and outruns Otwell’s brand new ride with a 4.60 @ 150.95 to 4.61 @ 151.26 for Otwell and new crew chief Scott Benham. Otwell’s mph indicates there’s more under the hood for that team with a few more laps to tune the chassis. 2nd pair featured Crownover vs Wilkerson. This was the first event that Clint’s driven the Cavalier and as mentioned the Robinson/Wilkerson team is brand new to the TPSA. Wilkerson tattooed C3 on the tree but watched the win lite come on for Crownover’s 4.72 @ 149.07. The Robinson/Wilkerson team say they’ll run the whole season and gain some seat time and experience. Welcome aboard! Next pair was the ‘Kid” Lance Abbott vs the defending Champ, Larry Pearce. Pearce had trouble with the burnout, and staging his ride, and the end result was the “Kid” moving into the next round with a career best 4.68 @ 147.75. He also collected the “Bounty Hunter” reward for parking Pearce. J Pigford would face Eddie the “Dude” Conrad and needed all of his 4.557 @ 153.07 to overcome the “Dude’s” holeshot 4.71 @ 145.75. We always seem to have at least one round to provide some extra excitement or add some drama to our events. The next pair would provide both. Aaron Hubbard in Ol’ Blue was a car length out before Roy Pigford’s Grand Am flinched. Looked like Ol’ Blue had a chance… At the 60’ clock, just where the ‘Vette usually sets the front wheels down, the front end was still in the air & climbing, seriously climbing, until it was nearly vertical and at least three wheels were in the air! Aaron had no choice but to feather the throttle and try to set ‘er down as gently as possible. Pigford stormed by and posted a 4.56 @ 152.42. Aaron was fine, Ol’ Blue ain’t hurt too bad, and will be back. In the pits, the culprit was found.. the top wheelie bars had folded and sent Aaron skyward. We cleared the track, took a deep breath, and watched Hughes and Hanson stage ‘em up. The “Boxman” lived up to the hype one more time with a .011rt and took the stripe, 4.73 @ 147.89, his career best. This was also the Hanson’s first time out with the new combo and they too ran a personal best 4.79 @ 143.70. Buddy Nickens drew the bye and shut off to a 4.72 @ 129.22.

2nd Round.. Nickens & Crownover were the first pair. Should be a good race as the cars are fairly evenly matched. Nickens moves first and his 4.62 @ 150.53 rolls into the semi’s. Crownover’s 4.64 @149.76 kept him close as both drivers recorded personal bests on this pass. Next pair had two gunslingers facing off, the ”Kid” Abbott against the ol’ veteran “Boxman” Hughes. Hughes was .022 on the tree but Lance one upped him with a .013 and led the rest of the way with a 4.68 @ 147.55. Hughes showed he has some more et under the hood with a few more laps with a 147.89mph & 4.745 et. We already know the draw works as we saw teammates run each other 1st round, now it’s brother vs brother,
Pig a Pig, so to speak. Joe had qualified better, and had a slight performance advantage, but that doesn’t turn on win lites and lil’ brother Roy advanced with a holeshot victory, 4.590 @153.55 to Joe’s 4.566 @ 152.68. Rick Cowger drew the bye and shut off early.

Semi’s.. Lance Abbott once again notched the gun belt with a .011 rt 4.70 @ 147.31 holeshot win over Nickens’ quicker, but later, 4.63 @ 150.31. Roy Pigford would face Rick Cowger to see who would face the “Kid” in the final. It was over before it started as Rick left the red bulb hangin’ with an oh so close -.001 red. Roy posted a 4.56 @ 152.12 to show the “Kid” what was comin’.

Finals.. They had met before and Lance’s rt had been the difference. This time Roy vowed revenge and there wasn’t much of a staging battle. Pigford’s Grand Am & Abbott’s S-10, affectionately known as the “Dump Truck” around the “PigPen”, staged up, the tree came down, green both sides, advantage to the “Kid” by not quite .02…would it be enough?? Win lite, Pigford’s side 4.586 @ 151.54 with Abbott’s scoreboard reading 4.694 @ 147.37. Thanks to all of the TPSA teams for an outstanding event...looks like 2k10 is gonna be a good 'un.

Thanks to Kenny, Sammy, the girls in the tower, and the entire staff of Dallas Raceway. We appreciate you allowing the TPSA to be a part of your 2010 program. Special thanks to all of the fans that came out and made the show possible. We also want to thank Randy Elliott and Austin for running the scales and helping with the race day duties and a tip of the cap to Big Don of racetalk39x.com for the live audio feed.

Results, & points page has been updated...watch for pics soon.
