Subject: ***Race #2 Dallas Raceway***

After the first race of the season and TPSA’s inaugural trip to West Texas and Desert Thunder Raceway, it was time to load up and head for the “Concrete Palace” and the familiar confines of Dallas Raceway. It was too early in the season for Sammy and the crew to be open for some Friday nite TNT, so all of the teams rolled in during the day Saturday. The Ford Guys were there early, installing their bullet fresh from Marvin Shaw. They had experienced some valve issues and Marvin quickly resolved them in the two week period between the events. Team owner, Jeff Mitchell, cut his Brazilian beach odyssey a couple of days short and was on hand to supervise the transplant. Other notables in the pits included Joe & Roy Pigford and a couple of special guests from Reher-Morrison, Larry Pearce, Team O, the Cowger/Wood team, the always popular ‘Vette of the Hanson family, DH and the “RedHead” were there after crash testing the Cavalier at DTR, and Team Talley/Nickens were present also with a freshly repaired powerplant that was damaged at the first event.

In addition to the Mitchell/Beck Team, the “Boxman” Donald Hughes, Aaron Hubbard in Ol’ Blue, and the new Winscott/Miller Team and their GTO were on hand to contest the “PRO” division.

After qualifying, the XTREME class was led by Joe Pigford’s GXP with Reher-Morrison power under the hood with a 4.634 @ 150.16, followed by Pearce, Otwell, Cowger, DH, and Hanson. Roy Pigford, and Buddy Nickens each had problems in qualifying and didn’t get a clean pass in either session. PRO qualifying was lead by Aaron Hubbard’s 4.808 @ 144.41 followed by Miller, Hughes, and Beck. The spread between the four cars was .038, which was an indication of how tight the racing to come would be.

XTREME 1st round…Rick Hanson made a competition bye when the Talley/Nickens Team couldn’t make the call. A faulty transmission front pump would end Buddy Nickens bid for a win on this day. The Talley/Nickens team has experienced their share of bad luck to start the season, but watch for them to rebound soon. Next pair to roll through the lanes would be a repeat of the DTR final from two weeks prior. Larry Pearce vs. the Cowger/Wood Team. Both of these entries use NRC/Slick Rick power and race out of the same shop. Pearce was coming off a win @ DTR, and Rick Cowger and the crew were ready to put their new Cobalt in the winner’s circle and collect the Team O Bounty Hunter award placed on the current points leader, Pearce. When the tree came down, Rick had some sort of gremlin and Larry advanced with a 4.631 @ 150.33. Next up would be defending series Champ Joe Pigford, and the 2010 Season Runner Up, Richard Otwell. Richard’s .001rt, 4.629 @ 150.70 (best mph of the event) sent Joe's 4.624 (low et of the event) back to the trailer. Roy Pigford was in the water next to face David Hubbard’s Firebird. Roy had been having trouble staging the GXP early in the day and the problem persisted sending DH to round 2.

Semi’s...First pair out would be Team O squared off against Rick Hanson. Hanson has a new Marvin Shaw/Slick Rick bullet for this year and is making steady progress with it’s performance. Otwell in the Team O ride was anxious to get his season back on track with a good showing @ Crandall. Tree comes down with a slight advantage to Richard and he’s never headed as his 4.625 was just slightly quicker than his 1st round pass, and he took the stripe ahead of Rick’s 4.74. Rick and Chad are getting quicker every week and look for them to continue to improve. Pearce and DH were up next and Pearce moved into the Finals with a 4.66 to meet his teammate Otwell in the final.

Finals…Once again the NRC/Slick Rick camp had two cars in the final. Pearce and his crew were in their second final in as many races in 2011. Otwell was looking for his first win of the year and to make up some points. Burnouts complete, pre stage preparations complete, and both cars stage. Tree flashes green in both lanes but Larry has a nearly .04 advantage. Otwell has had the performance edge all day but his GXP slowed to a 4.65 while Pearce recorded another 4.63 for the win. Just a couple of weeks ago the Pearce team was struggling trying to find the handle on the GXP but with some help from friends and fellow competitors, the problem was found and they've been on a tear. The chassis is now happy with the new found HP from NRC and Slick Rick's SR-2 heads which are based on a Dart 360 casting. Otwell rebounded nicely from his 1st round loss @ DTR and is running extremely well. The Team O Bounty Award was not collected at this event so it will carry forward to Evadale and pay $200 to the driver that takes out Larry Pearce in eliminations.

PRO round 1…Aaron Hubbard drew Bill Beck driving the Mitchell/Beck Team Probe. As mentioned the Ford Team had installed the bullet in the pits the morning of the race and had Marvin Shaw on hand to lend support. A. Hubbard was coming of a win @ DTR and his Houston Engine & Balancing entry had a slight performance advantage going in. Staging procedure completed and it’s green in both lanes…slight advantage to Double A. Ol’ Blue makes a hard move to the wall, but Aaron’s able to corral ‘er and his .003rt, 4.836 is just enough to clip Beck’s quicker .016rt, 4.832. Bill’s driving is steadily improving, and the Ford’s performance is picking up every lap with Marvin Shaw’s capable assistance. It’s just a matter of time before the Blue Oval team enjoys the limelight of the late rounds. Next up is the GTO of Gary Winscott with his new partner/driver Steve Miller. Gary and Steve have been friends for years and they decided the PRO class would fit their effort to a T. Crandall would be their first time in competition after putting the new combo together and a limited amount of testing. Miller would be facing off with the Beretta of Donald Hughes. Both of these drivers are well known for being on time and Steve’s .004rt had the early lead over the “Boxman’s” .015. Looked very close all the way downtrack… win lite comes on in Miller’s lane. Miller’s 4.815 would move him into the final. Hughes recorded an extremely competitive 4.834.

Finals…Based on rt’s and et’s from qualifying and the previous round, this should be a barn burner. Burnouts complete, Hubbard’s in the prestage bulb and waiting while the Winscott/Miller entry completes their staging routine. Both cars stage, tree comes down, the cars move together, but the red lite is glowing in Ol’ Blue’s lane! Miller would collect his first TPSA win in his first try and give team owner Winscott a well deserved victory. The tale of the tape revealed just how close this race was: Miller .001rt 4.808, Hubbard -.002rt 4.809. The spread for the PRO class was just .038 for the entire event and made for some very close racing. The Robinson/Wilkerson team Firebird is slated to be at the next event in Evadale with their new bullet combo to contest the PRO class and Randy Elliott is making progress on his updated combo and should be out in mid summer.

Our thanks to Sandra, Cindy, Sammy, Hoss, and the entire crew @ Dallas Raceway for another outstanding event, and to the fans and families that come out to support the TPSA and the special events @ DR.

Congrats to the winners and all of the TPSA teams that make the tow and make the show… you are the best! And a special tip of the cap to Richard Otwell who assumed many of the race day duties and to Randy Elliott for manning the scales and helping with the logistics. See ya soon @ Evadale…
