***Team "O" KO's Field! ***

Cowger/Wood Runner Up

Da' Winners... Team "O", with Richard Otwell at the wheel..

Runner Up and Bounty Hunter... Team Cowger/Wood

Dallas Raceway’s Friday nite program bracket program was cancelled due to a couple of early showers, and it looked like more was coming with the lightening and dark clouds that surrounded the track. Team “O”, Pearce, the Cowger/Wood Team, Robinson/Wilkerson, DH, & Hughes wiled away the time bench racing and there was some talk of washer pitchin’ and card playin’ until the wee hours but that is pure rumor and unsubstantiated by this reporter!

Saturday morning arrives and to everyone’s surprise, the weather forecast was wrong! Earlier in the week mostly cloudy, high of 95*, and southerly breeze was the word. Actually, the teams discovered there wasn’t a cloud in the sky, it was hotter than Sandra Bullock at the MTV awards, and close to gale force winds!

TPSA qualifying was slated to go off around 6:30pm but an early oil down; and it was an oil down from the starting line to the turn off (synthetic rear end oil), would delay things for quite a while. The upside was the cloud cover did make an appearance, and it was cooling off some. Sammy and the crew did an awesome job, but the left lane was gonna be a little tricky ‘till later in the event. Just when it looked like the lane was coming in, another, massive oil down in the same lane stopped the program again. After the smoke cleared, Joe Pigford with his Reher-Morrison power notched another #1 qualifying position with a 4.690 @ 149.10. Regular readers of the Pundit know that NRC Teammates Otwell, and Pearce have had some gremlins recently, and the general consensus was they “probably” would be hard pressed to make this event. Don’t bet against these guys as not only were they there, they were #2, and #3 qualifiers. It was reported neither had a chance to test… just fired ‘em up on the dyno, put the cars together, and make tracks for Crandall. Team “O” sat in the #2 slot with an eye opening 4.693 @ 147.76, and Pearce’s 4.718 @ 148.35 kept the top 3 very tight. Roy Pigford’s 4.739 @148.05, Rick Cowger’s 4.758 @147.58, and “Budman” Nicken’s 4.790 @ 146.54 rounded out the top half of the field.

1st round…Aaron Hubbard, once again behind the wheel of ol’ Blue, would face off with a familiar face. Tommy Platt was filling in for the “Boxman” and HR Hughes due to Donald’s recent back surgery. Gene & Tommy Platt were regulars on the TPSA circuit and instrumental back in the day when DH could win a round, and Tommy has driven ol’ Blue on a number of occasions, so the two “youngsters” know each other well. Tommy hasn’t had any recent seat time, but the Hughes/Platt team did get in some quality laps the previous weekend @ Crandall. Back to the race, burnouts and staging completed without a hitch, and “Double A” had the early lead. Both teams improved from their qualifying efforts and Hubbard’s 4.825 would move into round 2. Tommy posted a 4.899 in the Hughes’ Baretta. Look to see the Platts with “Tomcat” in the chair at more TPSA races this year. 2nd pair was the “Boss Hog” squaring off with the pride of West Texas, “Quickdraw” Lance Abbott in his popular S-10. On paper Pigford should have it easy, but Lance has put it on Joe in the past so nothing is guaranteed. As the tree flashes, “Quikdraw” lives up to the billing with a .416 lite, but Pig’s not to be denied and posts a 4.693 to trailer Lance’s best pass of the nite, 4.839. Next up was Richard Otwell’s Team “O” entry against the ever popular ‘Vette of the Hanson family with Rick at the controls. Richard showed the troops he was ready with a 4.693 of his own to match the Pig and end Rick’s nite. The defending champ, Larry Pearce rolled into the water alongside the Team Robinson/Wilkerson’s Trans Am. Junior and the "new guys" had a great .418 rt but couldn’t hold off the hard charging 4.757 of Larry. The next pair was a doozy! In this corner…errr lane, Rick “Ricky Bobby” Cowger in the Cowger/ Wood entry, and his opponent was the current points leader, Buddy the “Budman” Nickens in the Talley/Nickens Camaro. The Talley/Nickens ride improves with every outing and Cowger was coming off a runner up finish at the last event. Both were hungry for a round win, and the extra incentive (like he needed any) was for “Ricky Bobby” to collect the bounty for takin’ down the points leader, Nickens. Cowger was in touch with the stars, and needed his telepathic .407 rt to collect the bounty, and the round win with a 4.743 over the quicker, but later, 4.738 of Nickens. Heck of a drag race that had everybody on their feet. Roy Pigford drew the bye and calmly posted a .69 of his own, a 4.699. Luck always plays a role in any racin', and it was fortunate for Roy that he had the bye. A fuel leak on the burnout likely would have ended his nite if there had been an opponent in the other lane as he would not have had time to tighten the fitting and stage the car before the starter DQ’d him. As it was, he staged the car without doing another burnout, and his Reher-Morrison bullet rewarded him with an astounding pass. Oh, by the way, this was in the aforementioned abused left lane.

2nd round…The newest “Bounty Hunter” Cowger, drew Hubbard. “Double A” had a small advantage at the tree but his best pass of the event, 4.808, would cross behind Rick’s 4.745. A classic battle was shaping up in the water box. Otwell’s NRC powered machine had already run a couple of .69’s but the younger “Pig”, Roy’s, RM powered GXP, in just it’s second outing, wasn’t intimidated at all. Both cars staged, Otwell out first by .007, and they were eyeballing each other all the way down! Win lite for Otwell’s 4.691 @ 148.87 just in front of Roy’s 4.697 @ 149.28. Wow!...now that’s a drag race.. TPSA syle! The next pair featured rival engine builders as well, as Joe Pigford, aka “Boss Hog” would shoe his GXP vs Larry Pearce in his GXP. Both drivers ready and stage, the tree comes down, redlite glows in Larry’s lane. Joe storms down track to the low et of the event @ 4.679, 149.51. At the ticket booth, it’s revealed BOTH drivers redlited but Larry’s .309 was earlier than Joe’s .334. Just when you think you’ve seen it all… it was a full moon...LOL!

Semi’s…Cowger draws the bye which insures at least one NRC bullet would be in the final. He launches and shuts ‘er off about 330’, saving it for the team’s second consecutive final. Nobody left sittin’ for the next pair… everyone was on their feet crowding the fence. NRC vs Reher-Morrison, Team “O” facing off with the “Boss Hog”… who’s it gonna be? No drama’s in the burnout or staging procedure, tree comes down, green in both lanes, but it looked like Otwell has the advantage. The Win lite and scoreboard lite up the darkness and it’s Otwell! He left first with a .418 and out ran Pigford’s 4.696 @ 149.20 with a better 4.689 @ 148.87.

Finals…Team Cowger/Wood was fired up about being in another final, and hoped to put their Grand Am in the Winner’s Circle. Derryl Wood had cut the last day of his trip to Mexico short to board a plane and get to Crandall. Team “O” had plenty of confidence that it would be them collecting the dough at the end of the nite. As both teams run NRC power, the question was heard along the fence “would they race for it?”. I doubt any of the TPSA members believed it would be anything but an all out war and the intensity both drivers displayed would verify that. Burnouts complete, both prestage, and Cowger’s routine changes! Rick stages very quickly, Richard goes in a couple of beats later. Tree flashes, Otwell automatically wins when the “red” is left hangin’ in Cowger’s lane. Scoreboards show it would have been close…4.727 for Otwell, 4.735 for Rick. Congrats to Team “O” for their first victory of the year, and the Cowger/Wood Team had a great outing by stringin’ two finals together and collecting the Team "O" "Bounty" bucks.

Congrats to all of the TPSA teams that came out and braved the first official race of the “Summer Swing”. Special thanks to Sammy, Cindy, Sandy, and the entire Dallas Raceway staff, for their efforts in completing a long, hot, and challenging, event. As mentioned earlier, Sammy and the track crew performed near miracles on the left lane under the extreme conditions of consecutive oil downs and hot temps. Our thanks also to the Scalemaster, Randy the “Dandy” Elliott for donating his time to the TPSA while his car is down.

Next Event is July 24th at the “Concrete Palace”, Dallas Raceway.
